1. Still got mine, a Vintage V950B 5 stringer. Ripped out the crap active electronics and put a Kent Armstrong P and J pickup in there. The pickups need raising and it needs re-wiring, both of which I've been meaning to do for years to make it usable again. The neck isn't great and it weighs a ton which is probably why I haven't bothered. It'll never be my main bass again and I'll get no money selling it either so it just sits there.
2. Bought and Aphex Bass Xciter off Dandini. He was very easy to deal with and posted the pedal quickly and sturdily wrapped. I'd deal with him again no question.
3.
Unlined fretless only mate, otherwise it's cheating apparently.
It's a defretted Yamaha so I can't avoid lines!
4.
Yes, amazing album and a great dvd too.
Love the album, will have a look at the DVD.
5.
Roni Size - Brown paper bag Evenflow - Pearl jam + I Think ...You oughta know - Alanis Morisette was on a fretless...? Anyway, 3 nice'n'easy ones to start. Have fun...I miss my fretless....
Some good choices there. And Alanis Morisette.... Paul Young seems popular, and I forgot about Paul Simons 'Graceland' album. Good start!
6. I've recently picked up a fretless bass and am loving the sound. Anyone got any fretless lines they enjoy playing that I can use to get a handle on the instrument? So far I've been playing:- Pink Floyd - Hey You Bush/Gabriel - Don't Give Up Gary Numan/Alan Patridge - Music for Chameleons But am looking for others.
7.
The metal band I'm in play in drop B but as I'm awkward I play in B standard and just shuffle everything that isn't on the bottom string up two frets - has made for some tricky fingering occasionally when open strings have been involved but it's never caused a major problem
My old band played in drop B, we reset after one of the guitarists left and changed the low string so we're in C# standard because I wanted to sound like A Perfect Circle. We don't, at all.
8.
Just spoke to Jon and should be here Wednesday/Thursday, bit of snow up there! (and down here)
About 5cm in Sheffield so Jon probably got more out in the Peak District. Hope your new bass arrives soon!
9.
It's the five-day course. I had the first two one-on-one, then the guitar tech from Bring Me the Horizon joined in (Deano!) - it's all very laidback, and you get a lot of time with John.
Dean Robowtham? He's set up a workshop in the same building as our band practice space and I'm curious as to what he's up to in there. Various guitar/amp repair stuff I thought but maybe he's building stuff too.
10. From the TV ad I saw recently it looks like a good show. As the real Floyd aren't going to be touring any time soon I'd say £100 for a nice evening out for 2 including a meal isn't too bad.
11. I agree with the above except I like some of the modulation sounds. The compressors are OK but my bassist said the BYOC I got for £56 was miles better than anything on the Line 6 gear. I had a good core set of pedals (distortion, delay, reverb) and got an M5 to go in the middle and provide modulation or crazier sounds but I really don't use a huge amount of the settings as it's more tonal colouring than a pedalboard replacement for me.
12. Traded with the very affable Sean Fitzpatrick for a Yamaha fretless.
13.
The 'best' compressor is the one that does what you want it to do.
For example, I made a BYOC optical compressor. 2 controls, set unity gain, dial in amount of compression, job done! Not what you're after in terms of parameter control but they do a 5 knob version of the Ross compressor which looks good. The new MXR also has a lot of control and metering. Ovnilabs gave it a very good review here:- http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/mxrbass.shtml
14. Heard this beast last night, it sounds immense! Really big sound and a kind of low growl that reminded me a bit of the bass sound on 'Dopethrone'.
15. Gigged Tuesday, first of the year and 2nd overall with the 'new' band. We did 2 new songs which were a bit unrehearsed and I made a massive error on another but covered it and I think it went down well. We've changed styles massively since our other guitarist left so we were all a bit nervous about palying the new material in front of our friends but they seemed to like the new direction. Bonus.
16. Not sure about the last 2 and I'd pick different songs by a couple of the artists you've listed but certainly not a terrible set.
17. I bought this last summer when I fancied myself as an EUB player but have barely used it since then. Cosmetically it's not too bad with a few chips and scuffs and electronically it works fine. The main problem I've got is the intonation isn't great from string to string so I've been struggling to be inspired to practice. The nut probably needs work as string height seems different across strings. As I don't know any decent DB luthiers, it's just kind of sat in the corner of my room mocking me for not playing it so I'm selling it on the condition you might not be able to play it straight out the case. I'm also pretty small and the stretches are destroying my hands. I might just back into EUB at some point if I can find a more suitable instrument. It comes with a soft padded case and I'm after £200 which is £50 less than I paid when it had 3 strings (the low E is a spiro bought off Benbastin on here). Collection only from Sheffield, I know I said that with another bass I sold before I caved and posted it but there is noooo way I can post or even trust this to a courier. I drive so can meet part way or deliver not too far away for petrol costs.
18. I've decided to run my DHA VT1 at the recommended 12v instead of trying to get away with 9v. The PSU I have at the moment is kind of noisy and someone was kind enough to post a link to a supply on E-bay which they said worked well for about £6, but I can't find the old thread it was in. Can anyone give me a hand as to which supplies they've tried and had good results with please? Links appreciated
19.
You have not said what model, wattage or speaker is in there. If it has the crappy Blue Marvel speaker or the slightly better Sheffied speaker then look for a Black Widow replacement as it will work just fine without having to check the matching of cab and speaker. I have done this for a TNT combo and it does make a difference as you could really drive it with Black Widow but the Blue Marvel was flapping really bad, even at below gig volumes in the end.
I'm not sure tbh, will have a look tonight. It might even be a TKO.....
20. Looking at Status strings, I'm confused by the 'scale' option. I'd have thought medium would be fine for 34" basses but the Warwick website says that's long scale? Which do I need? And do I need high tension for flats or would standard 40 be OK?
21.
I need to get into this. Got a macbook, interface, usb keyboard and cubase. Anyone reccomend any free stuff i can play around with?
Try Synth 1, pretty straightforward software synth that should give you a good base to start learning the basics of synth programming but flexible too. Modelled on the Nord lead I think. Claw is the only other one I can think of at the moment, apart from Crystal which is very complex and probably not great for beginners.
22. So it's all you damn people with your VT1's on order holding up my DI!
23. The VT-1 is a different beast from the sounds of it, adds a nice tube warmth until around the halfway mark where it starts breaking up. Nice grind at the upper end of the gain knob without ever getting really distorted. The input and level controls let you get a nice balance between on/off and the bright switch is really useful at adding a bit more top end, not too much though. I'm sorted for overdrive but the Xotic does sound good from what you've said.
24.
That's the guy who writes long jingles for LEGO isn't it?
It's the guy who did 2 things everyone should learn after hearing a Bon Iver album and picking up an acoustic guitar:- 1. Realise that it's pretty easy to make that kind of music; and 2. That you in particular shouldn't bother.
25. I currently go through an old Peavey TNT combo our guitarist picked up for cheap and it works insofar as I can hear myself at practises. The sound isn't all that great though, would it be worth spending £50-60 to replace the current old 15" speaker with a Celestion BL15? I don't know how badly the stock speakers are regarded and if swapping them out would improve the sound at all. Also, would it be worth trying out a neo speaker? The combo currently weighs an absolute ton. I'm conscious they're pretty expensive atm and don't want to spend a lot as it's not my amp at the end of the day.
