1. Jazz -- more versatile, and a more comfortable neck (for me, anyways).
  2. nah... got to be Craggy Island
  3. Slap is so much better when it's used as an occasional splash of colour rather than for entire songs... or even entire sets! {remembers self back in '86 and hangs head in shame} Throw in the occasional little slap accent or a quick snap here and there, and it gives the punters those nice little "WTF was that??" moments without edging into mullet/grey slip-ons territory.
  4. I bought Sailing the Seas of Cheese out of curiosity, because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with this Claypool fella I kept hearing about. I hated it. I mean, I despised every second. So I put it on a shelf where it gathered dust for a good couple of years, until a while ago when I happened upon it and thought I'd give it another go. And lo and behold... I hated it even more. Sold it for 3 quid on fleaBay, or it would have ended up as a drinks mat.
  5. Well, I like it pretty much as it is, especially now the Warwick fixation has been toned down a bit. The slagging received by that hyper-expensive blue 5 string has probably seen them off! And there's a case in point -- there have been negative reviews in the past, and there will be in the future, you just have to look for it. Don't judge by the stars, just read the lines (and between them, sometimes). There are far better ways to say something's crap than just saying "it's crap"..! +1 for elom's "Reader's Wives" idea. Bassist had such a thing, and Bass Player still does. I'd like to see one in BGM too. I reckon the members of this august gathering have got enough subject matter to keep it going for the next 10 years!
  6. Can I safely assume that there isn't going to be another one this year? What's the most likely month for next year's one? I want to try & make sure it doesn't clash with a gig YET AGAIN, 'cos I have missed all of them so far. Grrrr.
  7. Been listening to a lot of Gerald Veasley lately. Nnnnnice

    MARK BASS
Mark Bass amps do strike me as being a bit fad-ish. It was the same with EBS amps when they first started taking off, everyone going on about how amazing they were. Well, until Mark Bass came along
Yeah, my thoughts exactly! Not tried the Markbass gear yet, so cannot offer comments. It's very nice to see a good range of split opinions here though, I'd hate to see them getting completely universal praise or rubbishing.
  9.
Thats a couple of tube stops from where I work so I should be able to make it.
Think I might join you for that! Can get very cheap train tix this far in advance.

  11. Following on from bj_rocke's Amp/Cab thread about his almost-immediately expiring Ashdown head, what's your briefest customer-satisfaction experience? Have you had an amp that went *phut* on its first night? A cab that blew its drivers at the first watt? I've been very lucky so far... the only kit that has ever let me down was my old Laney PB150 ProBass 4x10 combo (remember them?), which blew one of its cones and then developed a dry joint. However, I'd had it 10 years when the driver went and the dry joint was 3 years after that, so it did well... EDIT: come to think of it, one of the pots on my Wal went kaput once too. But I'd had it for 9 years by then.
  12.
If I ever purchase Ashdown equipment; it'll be s/h, tried and tested on ebay or Basschat.
If I ever purchase Ashdown gear, it'll be a very cold day in a very hot place. Tried a rig with ABM head and 4x8 + 1x15 cabs the other night, and the sound reminded me why I dislike Ashdown stuff so much. Bleucchh. Still, horses for courses innit? I have to agree with Waldo though, 15 minutes has gotta be some sort of record... I think we need a thread along the lines of "What's the shortest you've had a piece of gear before it failed/blew up/broke?"..!
  13. I could be seriously tempted by one of their cheapo acoustic basses... certainly look the part.
  14. For me, multiple speakers (e.g. 2x10) are 2-by-10, whereas single speakers (e.g. 1x15) are one-fifteen. Eh-pee-FAW-nee? hmmm sounds pretty crap to my ears Although I expect they think my surname sounds pretty stupid too Think I'll stick with 'eh-PIH-funnee' unless I ever meet one of them
Hartke - Har-keee
Blimey, I'd always used 'Har-kuh'. I stand corrected.
  15.
A Wongo?
Or a Bongwick..?
  16.
His name on basstalk was Rich, does anyone know if he is on here, or does anyone know who he is in general?
"Who is Keyser Soze? He is supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but to hear Kobayashi tell it, anybody could have worked for Soze. You never knew. That was his power. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." Ahem. Sorry You have a PM.
  17.
I don't understand this whole issue Talkbass has had a filter on for years true it didn't change it cockney slang it just **** it out, so the Cockney stuff (which I don't understanda word that is being said) is just Kiwi having a laugh in the word replacement I'm sure it can be made to just be boring and **** but if you shouldn't really need to swear in your day to day conversations (This is from some one who swears profusely) its simply not needed on any forum and I don't know any that really allow it anyways? If ya need to call some one a harsh name you can do it in a PM can't we Kiwi ya ************************** see now you don't know what I'm talking about shoe's on the other foot now
Absolutely agree with all the above. There's no need for swearing all over the place and the rhyming slang is just a bit of a giggle really, and anyone finding it an infringement of civil liberties or whatever really needs to a) chill out and be) get a sense of perspective.
  18. At one time, Status fitted a 36v preamp to their Jonas Hellborg models. -- the preamp was pretty much the EQ section from a channel strip. Apparently the output from these basses was simply colossal.
  19.
I've got one of these in my rack Sound Tech 802 2 x 400W 4ohm 2 x 230W 8ohm 1 x 800W 8ohm bridged Maybe not the lightest but a nice 1U amp and on sale at the moment for £299. Pete.
Yeah, I had one of these for a while. Triffic little thing. OK, so at 15lbs it's not as light as the AI one but let's face it, just how light do you want? 7kg is hardly SVT territory is it??
Mmmmmmm..tuna steak.. ^_^
Ohhh yes... properly cooked (or indeed raw) it's a thing of beauty. But there are few things worse than an overcooked one...
  21. Well, I've always found the bottom end of the neck too chunky -- I have silly stumpy little fingers, so a more Jazz-like neck suits me down to the ground. The only P-style bass I've ever enjoyed playing is Si Oldgit's gorgeous Shuker P-5... other than that, they simply aren't my cup of Lapsang. Still, horses for courses eh? Vive la difference!
  22. I've always thought the Kingbass (or rather, MK's Kingbass sound) to be very thin and gutless. Bring back the Jaydees, or better still, the GBs..!

Alex, this is all very well, but you've missed the really important question. Do you, or do you not, like tuna on your pizza?
  24.
Is it just me or is it becoming increasingly apparent that putting in an honest days graft is just too much for many people?
I put in a pretty standard white-collar 37.5-hour working week. There's a bit of a difference between that and "8-12 hours a day, 5/6 days a week". There's really no need for those sort of hours at the age of 16, and if someone doesn't want to work that sort of schedule, it doesn't make them lazy or idle. I certainly don't consider myself to be any sort of slacker.
  25.
lol, I was going to edit the post then I realised no one would have a clue what you were talking about, so I've left it in. Actually "evening out the sound" is best done in conjunction with treating the neck.
And presumably the tweaking, plucking and slapping comes later after the romantic meal and the fancy-coming-back-to-mine-for-coffee..?
