1. I hate people that call songs "numbers" like for example... "they played Stray Cats numbers..." I mean wtf?
2. I mean it's not that hard and it would be a piece of pish if you had one of those handy dremel tools you just stick a tiny drill bit the size of a match stick head and just gently file away a couple of mills from inside the slots. simples.
3. And don't forget a new nut is needed too because the slots in the nut are cut at a particular height to compensate with the frets heights, when there's no more frets your action will be higher so... if your nut still has some meat on it, the slots needs to be filed down a little further or a new one is on the cards. Do not attempt to file down the slots yourself unless you know what you are doing. A pro is recommended for that.
4.
Hi Fran, how you doing - your post got me very worried about my Bongo 5HHp - I've just been and checked it - I'm happy to say mine is fine other than it's a tad adrift at fret 24 on the E but I think I can live with that, and won't be bothering to adjust it I have to say that the Bongo is a great bass - very wide range of tone options and sits beautifully in any mix, both recorded and live - I think it has an underlying fundamental tone that's reminiscent of a P Bass, but with a multitude of sound variation available. It's great to play and even though mine is a tad on the heavy side for a Bongo, its weight is so well balanced it doesn't cause me back ache after a set, and the shape is so ergonomic that it's a joy to play. The only down side for me is slapping can be a bit awkward initially owing to the neck humbucker position. I've had mine for a couple of years now and won't be selling it!!
That's great news! Cheers
5. It really depends on the conditions and by that I don't just mean the wear and tear hits and bumps on the casing, for a good one which has had a full service including complete re-valve (very expensive to change them all with sovtek good quality matching ones) and a re-bias, then you can expect to pay up to £900 but then you must be weary of some real dud ones being sold which look good on the outside but are in need of a good service by a qualified tech, including the re-valve job, which to have it done you are looking at an extra £200 - £250 on top of whatever they are asking for.
6.
Thanks. I just ordered this. Frank.
If you like that book you're going to love this one: Fender The Golden Age 1946 - 1970, even though it is a general Fender history book and covers all the guitars made within that period, it has a great big section on all the Fender Basses (Precision, Jazz, VI, Jaguar, Mustang etc) containing 100's of good quality pics of rare and unseen basses. I think this book is a must for any keen collector and Fender affcionados. 7. You need to get yourself a copy of this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Fender-Bass-Illustrated-History/dp/0634026402/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333428876&sr=8-1
8. The SLO slimmer neck does exists but... only in the 4 strings variant and what that is, none other than a Sterling 4 neck profile on a Stingray 4.
9. I think it's a very good price considering that a new one of those whould set you back at least £3500 in English pounds (f*** me that's about €4199!!) If I didn't have an exactly similar one I'd be biting your hand off for it. Lovely baby by the way! Congrats
10.
Good - it saves me PMing you to put a price on .
Yes... all part of the joke, shhhhhhh! don't tell no one
11. Yes yes I know... here we go again... I've said I'd never sell these but hey oh a man is entitled to change his mind. Nevertheless, it's time I moved on to "something better", so without further ado, for sale are my beloved Dingwall basses, all 3 of them as follows: 1) 5 Strings ABZ in natural ash with maple neck and frethoard, 2) 5 Strings ABII in Redwood over Walnut chambered body with a Walnut neck and Wenge fretboard and 3) 5 Strings Super J/P chamber body with a maple neck and fretboard Pics below, however I don't know yet what to ask for them, please make me a sensible offer and I will consider it. Yeah, right! No way Jose' Happy April fool's day!! 12. They look lovely in a... Sandberg-y way.
13. Very nice, I love Martin's work
14. Until we sight it it ain't worth jack!
15.
Yeah but on the bright side at least Phil's still with us.
You reckon?
16.
Even more unrelated, ...... Mind you have you seen Gary Moore lately... looks like someone's taken a blowtorch to a Nick Nolte wax work.
Not nice. The bloke's brown bread fuh'faak-sake!
17. Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's standard, no fancy coating, cobalt etc, pink packet for 4 strings sets (45-105) and lyme green for 5 strings sets (45-130) Ernie got it right first time around, all that coating malarky makes the strings feel coarse and unnatural.
18.
Dammit I want a bongo now.
Had one... on the plus it has a HUGE booming great sound, capable of shaking every living thing around it and so yes I had a bit of fun with it, but it was short lived. There must be a number of reasons why the Bongo didn't become a keeper in my stable and was sold it 11 months later. The things I hated the most were that dated pickup blend control and the unswitchable preamp, it's on all the time and that's about it! So for me the thrill is gone. The 25th Anniversary (now called the Reflex) and the Big Al are much better and more versatile instruments. Also... the 24 frets scale on a Bongo (at least on all the 3 different ones I have tried) is a bit f'd up, no matter how accurately you adjust the intonation, saddles, etc any note pressed down past the 12th fret are way off tune, and I have tried it with the best tuners around, Peterson strobo, Korg pitchblack and tc polytune I reckon EBMM haven't done their math right when they placed the frets, or god knows why, it's just very difficult to get a true note from fret 14th onward. Things like that put me right off, for an instrument that cost you the best part of £1800 for a 5 strings with piezo which mine was. I don't miss it and the simple answer is below in my signture picture
19. Sheldon you don't often get a word of critisicm from me on any of your work but I have looked at the way these Super P headstocks are going and... I can't take it anymore!! I have to say your original design (no matter how expensive or time consuming it is to achieve) was the best in my views, you rendered a very arty solution, now you are taking it back form us with corner cutting options that are imho not worthy of the original. Exhibits A / B / C How can anything be better than that, I ask... The second variant which appeared on Dave Swift's headstock (which is the inlay without the scalloped section) I can just about see it fitting within the design But this I am not a fan of: People of Basschat, support please! Which one do you think looks better? 1) original scooped / etched or 2) Modern plastic plate.
20.
I still want to try one ASAP.
If ever you happen to be in the "big smoke" you are more than welcome. cough cough...
21.
I think the GWB1005 is a bit out my price range by @ £3k. A couple of GWB35s went for @ £350 last year. Not totally sure its what I'm after as it only comes in black (minor selling point).
That is the Gary Willis I was referring to, not the other cheap ones, worlds apart from the "real thing" they're ok but... not way near as good as the 1005
22.
To be fair whatever my perception of the basses, Sheldon has always come across as a top man.
23.
I wish I'd had the time to be able to tell whether I liked Dingwalls or not. When I was at the London Bass Guitar Show earlier this month I had about 20 seconds playing a Dingwalls bass before it was taken off me by someone on the stand. I guess he didn't think I looked worthy of playing one of their £5k basses although to give him his due he did take time to explain the "dual density" body and the theory behind the fanned frets. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to test the 'theory'. As a maker myself I understand the importance of getting your wares out there and exposed to as many potential or future buyers as possible - obviously the 'professionals' showing the Dingwalls basses figured they knew better.
I very much doubt all the above! Mark Stickely of Bass Direct who is the distributor and was the owner of the stand, is a bloke you'll find hard to replace in terms of friendliness and dedication to promote his stuff. I cannot see neither him or all his good staff nor Sheldon himself who was there demoing his own creations (with the patience of a saint having to repeat to every punter the same concept beyond his work), that anyone were so abrupt with you unless you have come across to them in a way that could have got their back up. But even then I have seen it with my own eyes the way they dealt with the public on the Sunday I was there and I doubt that they could have been so abrupt to a member of the public.
24. You'll never find an Ibz Gary Willis for £500-£600 sovs, though. Not even used.
25. Cort Curbow 27 frets! No sh|t! and its cheap too with a Bartolini pickup an' all! http://www.thomann.de/gb/cort_curbow4mic.htm
