Pork and Pickle by Way Hige which is basically a pork loin plus a fizz circuit. Really satisfying low gain drive with a nice character especially live with the band. Genzler 4 on the floor is another nice lower to mid gain with the added filters which really help sit the drive where you want it in your sound. You can open up the top end or tame it right down to just the right amount of bite and similarily with the low end keep it ‘tight and tidy’ by filtering where the lows get the drive. I’m using both on my board currently and they gain stage really well together too making a very versatile range of gain individually or in combination.

I’ve had them in place so long now they’re just part of the baked in tone. Initially I’d got them to add to the signal chain of a different unit but then ended up with an all tube pre amp with a Tx in the DI. How I use them now is having them in line after a drive unit or preamp (or both) sounded best as they’re adding some colouration and need a wee bit of signal driving into them. I did get the next model after these it it lost some lows while adding more colouration but the 2020s models were the right mix. I’ve seen on TB one guy had about 5 or 6 2020s unit in line beneath a Nano board. I had one initially and it wasn’t so noticeable. Ended up with three 2020s’ but two was the sweet spot for me. If you’re reconsidering using them definitely try them after a drive or preamp to get the most out of them.

Great question. It’s basically a pre defined eq cut at 800Hz which simultaneously maintains bass and treble at a consistent volume as the cut gets more pronounced across the sweep of the knob. Imagine a bass and treble boost only eq on an active bass which also adds that 800Hz mid cut too for slap tone but all mapped to one knob. At lower levels the cut is less evident but can liven up the tone. It’s looks a bit one dimensional on the surface but in conjunction with a drive pedal you can think of it as adding a second eq voicing. I can have a nice drive tone and then engage the Funkulator and immediately get a more scooped voicing which might be preferable on some tunes. I’ve said in a post about the Funkulator in another thread it’s really quite useful and can enhance a jazz bass’ natural voice, add a new voicing to a drive pedals as well as tighten up finger style at lower settings.

My preamp appeared to stop working ahead of Friday nights gig but my trusty old basswitch has came to the rescue. I must have this pedal for 11yrs or more. Quick rewire this morning and the board sounds great for both IEM/FOH testing with headphones and into the amp. Added a Genzler 4OTF Classic bass for an always on sound to warm up the clean preamp which hits my two LBA 2020s transformers hidden underneath before the input stage on the Basswitch. The Dual Band comp is in the always on serial loop of the Basswitch before DI’ing this combined drive and comp sound out to the Cab M+. Sound great! The line out hits the remaining pedals before running into a Thumpinator hidden underneath the other side of the board before going to the amp. Pork and Pickle is more recent anddition and gain staging with the 4OTF just to the amp does exactly what I enjoy and wanted them to do. Adding a nice oomph on stage for me and the drummer but the FOH/IEM remains ‘clean’ and punchy. I’ve gotten compliments by sound techs before running this combination as it doesn’t mess with the FOH sound they’re trying to get right and they can give me a sign if I need to turn down the amp to get the balance right out front.

Yes and yes. This CTR input does allow a second (mini) foot switch for scrolling through the presets. It can also be set for use with an exp pedal

Also I hope they show the settings for the presets any some stage. It would be good to know how they got there. Considering the hidden features. I’m sure the TB forum will start harassing IMA to get some cheat sheets on the go

I recently bought a couple of pedals to do exactly what this pedal does. They are now for sale and if I had been paying more attention that this was due to be released then it would have saved me some minor hassle. In context we do a pretty fun set where something like the MXR is perfect. Save some presets which won’t need to be scrolled through mid song. The idea of the mini expression pedal expands the versatility but is not super necessary and an additional cost. The mini preset switch is handy and could be mounted on top of another pedal or closer to most accessible area of the pedal board. Like I mentioned I think a whole lot of people are gonna find this very handy.

Without sounding like an immediate acolyte for many gigging bass players who need a couple of familiar sounds to nail the wedding gig/pub gig it’s gonna do a lot of the heavy lifting. It’s not gonna have the flexibility of a dedicated synth but has the accessibility of a pedal with some nice added flexibility to fine tune for folks who want to or need to deep dive. I think what MXR have offered is a pedal most of us can add to a board and have useable practical sounds that cover a lot of what we need. Calling it BassSynth will garner scrutiny from those who want a full synth in a pedal but realistically it’s a mass appeal unit serving 80%+ of the gigging player. It’s nice to see a synth pedal which isn’t just showcasing the tech wizardry and offering go to tones out of the box.
