Although I sold one of these recently it was more to do with the fact I prefer the P Bass tone/sound. The DJ bass is an absolute killer bass. Comfortable, classy and a pleasure to play. In regards to Lakland they make a damn fine bass guitar and my P Bass is a lakland - bought from these very forums unseen as the quality of the DJ convinced me to take the risk - bump

OK so by pure chance my mate got a new mac book last week and posted up some video of old gig footage. http://www.hangonvoltaire.com/ If you scroll down to the Club Flicknife Resents... bit and you can see all the glorious footage of a gig I waffled on about here on another post. Its not a blistering display of bass skills of a treatise on tone but that was one of my most fun nights out ever. Plus that old P bass was great Public Health Warning - the 'singer was a frontman not a singer so the vocals should be considered in this context My personal fav bit is the all female stage invasion! I hope you enjoy

The lehle dual looks interesting - Im guessing you can run two different amps and switch between them or have them both on? My thinking is this and I'd appreciate your input: Setting up my wee line 6 studio 110 for a dirt sound going thru DI or mic out to the desk to be blended with my clean tone so I keep the bottom end intact and have the dirt sit like a creamy layer of delicious on top? How did you run the Lehle out of interest bump

I played a Fender '78 for a few years having got swapped from a thin, fast Ibanez SR something with active pick ups. The Ibanez was much easier to play, had more sounds, not all of them good I should add, and was a fair price. The P sounded better. Recently got back to playing and got a Jazz bass, Lakland DJ model - lovely bass and a nice sound but for me rolling off the volume and tone controls created a different sound but to my ears not a useable sound. I always thought it sounds too jazz like (strange that)! Switched back to a P bass (Lakland BG) and its just got that sound! I roll back the volume and it mellows a little but doesn't lose anything, I roll back the tone control and it gives me a deeper flavour. This bass, and a P bass in general, is like one of those really good sound men you occasionally find at gigs. I play with my fingers and it says oh ok your looking something classic sounding, I tweak the tone and volume control rolling them back a little here and there and it delivers the tone. I turn up the volume and tone control and use a pick it just says oh yeah now you want that sound? no problem. Bam its edgy growly and all those good things you want from that type of tone. I find that a P bass is more useable across its volume and tone setting than that active Ibanez was. It might not have been all bells and whistles but we dont really need it do we? A P bass will do slap, it will do prog. It might not be as easy to play as on a custom this or that but you can and it will sound great all the time you do it. Simplicity is beautiful, a sunset, a kiss, a p bass. none of these things need to be complicated

I should probably just use some drumming software but does anyone use a drum machine for practice? I'd be keen to try out different time signatures etc but like most things there is so much choice! Any help would be appreciated and recommend software too if you have tried any. Cheers

Yeah nice to see groove being considered not acrobatic's Doddy I respect the comment that these list's are often sh*te but its hardly that serious and meant more as a way to spend some time wasting on the web. Also its a way to be exposed to other genres of music and to some missed gems. I stumbled across the list looking for some good covers songs for a Christmas gig back home and not only have I found some top tunes to play but also some classic's to spin between bands. In its defence its not as bad as the Channel 4's offerings of Top 100 shows.

Norah jones had a good tune but I think her signature vocal style didn't work over it that well. She has these coy little bluesy/ jazzy inflections that are fine with bluesy/ jazz music but didn't translate that well. I too agree we should fire up a new thread every week giving our two cents worth of the Later..... line up. It passes the time if nothing else

First big gig at a local music festival about 3000 people there - i think I was 17 playing and playing in a covers band. Its was a summer night and abt 15 minutes into the set a travelling brass band from eastern europe and their 20 or so majorettes walked into the crowd and were all standing right at the front. The chicks looked like something outta L.A.- all tight dresses and really beautiful. And there we were rocking out. Needless to say that turned out to be a great week. Second was my old bands last gig back in belfast a few years ago. The crowd were amazing, the support acts were all buddies, the whole vibe was unreal and the tone outta that old '78 P bass I had back then was pure delicious growl. I hung up my bass after that as I thought it will never be topped! Here I am back like some fun junkie sniffing around for that hit again Good Times!

think that new foo's tune is very Tom Petty and was the 'Fat' Smear on 3rd guitar? Did you see Sting's beard? He's gone all John Martyn!! or maybe he's developing an eco-system to help battle deforestation?

That Lakland in Guitar and Bass this month....
krispn replied to Moos3h's topic in General Discussion
I think the point is that these are still small companies making limited batches as Dave5 pointed out A CNC body cut in Indo-China is no different from a CNC machine at Fender USA or anyone else but I think our perceptions of the Far East maybe date back to some of those terrible rip off guitars many of us owned when we started out! It is certainly the trend that a lot of high end makers are doing this with finishing process/set-up in their 'native' country. I think I'd be happier with a bass made in Indonesia in a batch of 30 than a USA Fender made in a batch of ????. These are HIGH END builders. While their prices are not affordable by any means for their particular product its the 'more affordable' version. Like any of these things its about brand, build quality and what you can afford as much as it is about Its no different from the fashion production industry. Gucci bags made on a production line in China sold for ££££ in up market outlets. I am not attacking the UK builders here but we often assume that the Far East must be paying poor wages and have terrible conditions compared the the UK but what isit like compared to other jobs in that country? By that logic I wonder what the wages are at UK builders such as Matamp, Shuker etc etc be interesting to see what holiday pay, sick pay, benefits and wage p/h is there as a comparison the Far East and who is getting the raw deal? -
Thanks Dave I've got some from Jeannie's already for the DJ. I've been given details of Sims who do custom p/g's in the UK. http://www.simscustom.com/ They seem to know their onions!

OK so there has been some chat on the official thread and this is in no way a hijack.... I noticed that some people are travelling alone to the show and others suggested some way of ID'ing fellow forumites. What if we arrange a little 'meet and greet' of our own? What about the cafe area at 11am...... maybe we could have a little sign printed with the Basschat logo and take it from there? Not sure how people feel about name badges but certainly a wee white sticker with 'BassChat' on it would allow people to know who fellow forumites are, pop over and say hi and not be wandering around alone. These type of shows are always better when you have someone to rave about gear to or to encourage you to demo some stuff If people know the layout of the venue and can suggest a more appropriate meeting point then please put your views forward. I wouldn't take much to arrange and could really make the day better for a lot of people who would otherwise be walking about alone. Look forward to your suggestions gavin

Just sent this to someone who suggested I post it Its Ed Friedland doing a head to head with a bunch of different string sets from DR (my string of choice for round wounds as it happens) You really can hear the difference between the different sets and his views on tone etc are always spot in. Enjoy http://www.bassemporium.com/newsletters/0609newsletter.html

Hey some of you may remember this from a few weeks back..... Price £775 shipped with gig bag and 2 spare pick guards. £750 shipped with gig bag and p/g of your choice of the three - black, white or tort The p/g's are from jeannie pickguards in the USA, great quality and a perfect fit. The Bass.... This is a very versatile bass with a whole heap of great tones. The neck is to die for and all you have to do is see how many forumites play Lakland stuff to believe the hype. I'd add a link to the Lakland site but they have discontinued this bass. I'm positive they will bring out a similar version, possibly an artist endorsement, its just too good to just lose from their inventory. Condition The bass is on great condition but it has been played and as such has a few very minor little marks No chips on the finish etc but there are two small dings on the back of the headstock - thats what happens when you hit cymbals with your bass! Purely cosmetic and I'll get pics tonight at practice. I have to admit this is a reluctant sale but its only to fund another purchase of one of those must get before its gone deals! I think you call it GAS I have just acquired a Lakland p bass so I've still got my Lakland fix (phew!) If your near Edinburgh and wanna come over and give the bass a go I'd be happy to arrange a time. I have a practice room where you can turn it up nice and loud! Thanks for your interest feel free to mail me direct at gavindevlin'at'mac'dot'com Gavin

Keeping my tort guard and don't really use the black or white any more. Had the black guard on last week for my final gig with my old band - my equivalent to a black arm band but an all-black bass is a little too death metal for my liking! The guards were made by Jeannie Pickguards in the USA and are top quality. The black has some marks as you may expect so I'd take a little less for it. The white is in great shape. Shall we say £20 and £25 respectively? Buy both and I'll do them shipped for £40. Go on treat yourself - Its like getting a new bass that feels just like your old one but looks sexy! I'll update with picks tomorrow (i'll show them fitted to the bass for a better idea of how they look) Thanks for looking
