1. will have to arrange a night for you to come round mate! Cheers!
2. Well... after seeing that... and doing a bit of price research... I got my own, for even less than what was paid above, and mine is one of the last USA ones, which was a nice added bonus (not that im knockin's the Vietnam ones at all). The chaps at the shop even gave me a Speakon connector FOC as well. Top guys, who also fashioned a protective cardboard cover out of other boxes with a stanley knife for me to take it home in. It is awesome. As mentioned above - menacing. Its set up downstairs at the moment and hasnt been moved because i just like looking at it. Fearsome power as well - im not using it above 0.5 volume on the amp (B2RE) and its shaking the floorboards. With my Ric and a pick you can nail that Ric/Ampeg tone in seconds. I am so proud of it that I had to take a piccie of it and my basses. Sadly I am in the picture as well, but hey, you`ll get over that I hope.
3. HAS to be a Rickenbacker 4080. Then, the rest of the money you have left over can pay for a good chiropractor.
4.
i did find some old japcrap bass in my loft called an itchifani the g-string was quite rough
lol @ that. In all seriousness, a friend of mine was employed to clean out a rich person's loft, and they told him to chuck everything out that he found in there. He found a Rickenbacker guitar, which he did not chuck out. Now thats a find...
5. Of course I would love an 8x10 but I am a weed and cannot lift that kind of behemoth, or fit it in the car. But if it solved your GAS for the big bad 8x10 .... can only be a good thing (for your back) ;-)
6. i want one i want one i want one i want one i want one i want one i want one i want one i want one i want one i want one. ahem. Good purchase sir
7. I now have that tune in my head and it wont go away... thanks for that BBC (not). PS I love your posts.
8.
Well If you gor for Alex's Big One you'll have £149 left so quite a lot of beer money
Correct - at the current Guinness Exchange Rate (GER) in my local boozer that makes 46.56 pints. Result
9. So thats +2 for Barefaced so far.... interesting...
10. Beer money = good
11. True sir, but surely these shops would be aware that getting some money in the till than not (particularly since they are currently advertising at a cheaper price) is paramount in the current economic climate?
12. Ive been seriously considering buying a new cab. The one I have isnt quite loud enough... its a nice sound, but could just be a lil' louder (our drummer is a very VERY loud drummer). Henceforth I went looking for one, and found what I think would fit the bill. The price of said cab at a number of local (and online) retailers was £799. Not a small spend (I know a lot of you guys have your Aggies / Epi's etc that cost considerably more, but to me thats a fair bit of bunce gone out of back pocket) but I was prepared to do it... and hopefully cure any residual GAS for some time. First local shop - only got one left, have now sold it, if we get another in the price will be £999 Second local shop - we cant get any at that price now, it will be £1049 First online retailer - we havent got any left. If we get anymore the price will change for the worse Second online retailer - we havent got them anymore. Would you like a 8x10 instead than you will need a truck to shift it with? the truck does not come free with cab though im afraid, sir. Quite simply - why does the price change so drastically from one day to another dependant on stock? maybe im just miffed. and dood - I apologise for my incessant dribbling about this subject for the past week. lol
13. Deacon - probably the first "real" understanding I had of bass was through him and Another One Bites The Dust as a young chap a while ago listening to my Dad's vinyls. I went to see Queen & PR at Hyde Park and it just wasnt the same without him, even with the lack of Freddie. Legend. And yes Dood, was very spooky this thread appeared on the same day as our nerdy "Deacon's scratchplate" conversation! lol
14. prettyprettyprettyprettypretty have a bump. yum.
15. Sean, that is a beautiful rig you have right there. V-Type, Ampeg cabs, and a Ric. Spot on
16. And on the subject of '53 Fenders... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1953-Fender-Precisio...93%3A1|294%3A50 hmmm. 0 feedback?

Gibson

I do think you get a hell of a "cool" factor from playing a Gibson, partially because you dont see a lot of them. maybe it's something ive always had, just a need to play something a little different? I still class Ricks as "a bit different", particularly the 4001's, cos you dont see them getting played an awful lot these days either. Jack Bruce got me GASsing for an EB3, till I found the LP Bass. I absolutely adore my 72' Les Paul Bass. It does everything I could possibly ask for from a bass - more selection dials and switches than you can shake a stick at and it just looks like it has The Essence Of Rock (tm) built into it due to the classic LP shape. That cutaway helps for up the neck twiddling as well. It does weigh more than a small house though...! lol
18.
All kosher apart from the scratchplate & bridge, as far as I can see from those rubbish, blurry little pics. Scratchplate's a home-made "upgrade" and I've seen a few 70s & early 80s Ricks with these brass bridges, they were proper aftermarket replacements & have been discussed on Rickresource a few times - can't remember who made them though.
Thats exactly the same type of bridge that was on my Ric... exactly the same (except mine had been chromed)
19.
Thank you! Well.. ya know.. it was either a Shuker or a stick, some string and a cardboard box... but I didn't have the skills for the latter ;o)
Im not into extended range basses at all (I only own 4's) and thought that the neck on the previous Doodle would be a "bit much" for me. But actually it was awesome. Fast, clean and really great to hold. So there's an unbiased view of a Shuker neck - they are pure quality!
20. filthy bass PORN again from Mr Shuker. Lovely stuff DJV - impressive and with added LED's... when do I get a tinkle on this one then?
21. this is a quite intriguing little project... will be keeping my eyes peeled!
22. you've kept this imminent arrival quiet at work mate!!!! might have to havea pint of the black stuff to celebrate...
23. I thought id best come back and add something to this thread since I started it... nearly a year ago! To cut a long (and sad) story short I was bequeathed some cash in an inheritance. I remembered my little trip to Denmark St. I also knew I still wanted an EB3, because I love Jack Bruce (Yes, I know his classic EB tone is fairly useless in 85% of gigging environments, but we are talking JACK BRUCE here). As we all know, they dont necessarily grow on trees, and certainly not on any trees here in Norfolk. So I decided to bite the bullet and get on a train to Laaahnndaaahhn for a day of beer and bass. Went to every shop on Denmark Street - im not going to name names of places that I didnt think were worth visiting again (you all know which one/s they are anyway), more praise the places I did like. The two places that stuck out were Wunjos & V&R, both staffed by very pleasant and helpful people who were happy to let me have a tinkle on anything I fancied. I tried an EB3 out in V&R and yes, I could get "that" moving mud sound but then noticed an old 72' Les Paul Bass. Had a go on that and was instantly in love. The JB sound can be nailed, as can numerous other tones due to the amount of controls you can fiddle with. With the extra "oddity" factor it had sold itself to me, so I bought it. There was one in Wunjo as well in not as good nick, although I think someone has bought their one now. My new (old) bass did need a setup, which they were happy to do at a later date FOC, and chucked a brand new case in for it. I also didnt pay the advertised price on the ticket for the bass. So, basically, I was extremely happy with buying from them for perhaps a tad more than the eBay price (not that they turn up much) and will do so again if I ever want something else of the same ilk. In fact, I was so impressed with the service (both pre and post sale) that I emailed them a little thank you letter, which I dont do very often! Only thing I would say is that it would probably save them some time in the long run to get their guitars set up better before sticking them out for people to play - a couple that I tried could have done with some tinkering with trussrod / bridge IMHO - would make their guitars more attractive for sale and saves getting them setup later. As for the vintage v new argument - im happy with either. When I want / need a 5 string, ill almost certainly buy a new one. For now, I like the vintage sound and "mojo" you get from older basses, plus the stuff I do in the band im in is kinda suited to that sound. And I always use either my 82' Ric or the LP bass at gigs - as a previous poster stated, they are for playing! Sure, you may damage them, but that's why they already have mojo-marks... Im more worried about such things getting nicked than damaged, so I guard my basses quite jealously before and after the gig... having said that id be the same about a "new" bass as well. Being a vintage bass doesnt necessarily make it more "nickable", as to the untrained non-expert eye any guitar is worth nicking if its in a position to be thieved - as one of my chums sadly found out when his Warwick Rockbass (which was a lovely little player) got pinched out of his car recently. I guess its just the sheer value of what you may lose that is the issue. Mind you, if you had your new £2000+ Wal or similar nicked, you'd be looking at a similar loss if it got thieved (and also the loss of your sanity and cheery disposition). deep breath I think thats my longest post ever? Best take a week off posting now, im spent.
24. 25. I have an old version (72') and they are fantastic. You can get a load of tones from it, and yes they certainly are heavy...
