Have you got a photo of that lot with a bass or something , to get some perspective on that mad lot. Or maybe a bus! I would pay to give that a blast for half an hour.

Another good reason to buy second hand, already set up. Check ebay, theres always basses "set up for rockabilly" or "slap style" . If you find a boosey and hawkes one described as such it will get you on your way. There is still a wide variation in set ups , high or low action . You wont know till you try. Where are you?

Second hand will get you a better bass for your bucks. Cant go wrong with a boosey and hawkes, check ebay. The cheaper thomann basses are chinese origin which just dont seem to last. Take time to read this forum along with doublebass hat and talkbass. Laminate is all you will need for rockabilly, not carved which are more expensive and less robust.

The Magnum is a pickup on a stick! Missed one on ebay recently, went around £900. They really should make them again.

Ive never been happier than with my current mesa walkabout 15 and matching extension cab, I would say they are in the lightweight cabs bracket by todays standards, but put them side by side on a stage and stand clear. They have a 12" speaker without a magnet that pumps down into the stage, it seems as though the bass comes from all directons . Whenever I ve tried stacking them though , there seems to be some sort of phase cancellation and they can sound totally limp.

Walkabout is great for double bass, have the input on passive with gain about 1 o clock, flick the active switch for lecky bass to get a bit more bite. All the Mesa forums reckon you can run the head with 2 , 4 ohm cabs even though its rated 4 ohm min.

Seems as though any interesting bass ends suddenly on ebay, if people have a price in mind put it up as "buy it now" , thats what its there for. We' ll never know now....

Another thing to be wary of is the issue of the dressed fingerboard. I ve played basses where they have been over dressed and the fingerboard srarts to vibrate when you play slap style, not good. Of course all these faults are being pointed out so you wont bid

Weedehackers are for the strimmer not the bass,simple as that. People got into them to solve the string tension problem for slapping, for they work. But that stuff was never made to produce a musical note , everyone who uses somr type of weedwhacker has a complaint of some sort...the low E has no defenition theA string is too quiet etc. The conclusion I came to a long time ago is that they just dont work. Simple answer is to buy some guts, they were actualy designed to be put on s double bass!!! I dont mean this to sound harsh, but Ive been through every string out there, so over time you learn a bit

That could be DIYd so easily. I would make it longer underneath the bass , and put a large hole in it , so that it slippped over the endpin collar. No need to screw into bass body that way

Matching the impedence will cure tone issues such as nasaly thin sound,but then a gain stage is needed to boost the signal from the piezo to a level that an amp can work with. Hence a pre amp is recomended for piezo pickups.

Eliza Dolittle , her bass player uses upright almost exclusively.

They could have been rotosound strings. The G and D are nylon, and look quite thick compared to the wound E & A.

Big band era bass players had to be first to a gig so they could claim a spot on stage where they could drive the spike into the floorboards, this would be done over a cross beam and the sound would get transmitted along the beam ,thus using the stage as a big sound box. Not sure how effective it would be though

New bridge blank from Thomann is about £40. Have a go at fitting it yourself, it isnt that hard, Loads of tips on here to help

Good to know, dont get the headphone amp though,how does that come into it?
