Chip started doing this some time ago. One of his regrets was the weight of the bodies. They are not ALL heavy - I have a few Forty's that are lighter than some 70's Ash P's and J's I have played. Ibanez Studios are just as weighty but for me, it's all about balance. I have lighter basses that don't balance a well and are more of a pain at the end of a night. Anything Head Heavy is nornally balanced by "applying" weight with your forearm to balance it, therefore more of a drag on your shoulder. Ask Cocco, Noillag and Machines! Horses for courses. Cheers.
Nonsense. Adding level anywhere in the frequency range, such that you overload the maximum clean input level of whatever preamp you are talking about will cause distortion. So what he means is adding more volume may cause breakup. Cutting any area will not ever add more distortion. Since you are removing level. However it may not specifically lessen distortion, if the distortion is produced from a large amount of level in another area of the frequency spectrum. So if you have a signal that is 60dB higher at 200Hz and 12Khz than it is at 1Khx, but it is still under the headroom of the input gain of the pre, then you will have a clean but ridiculously scooped sound. If you then bring the gain up on that sound you will clip at the top and bottom of the frequency range, but quite probably not really in the middle. If you cut the bass and treble you will eventually clean that signal up. Note you didnt cut the mids!

I wonder if this idea might have come about due to the design quirks of guitar amps? On amps which use a Fender or Marshall type tone stack, the midrange control affects the attenuation across all frequencies, not just the midrange, so turning the mid knob up will indeed give you a few dB more gain overall. This might be why the idea that "more mids = more distortion" is specifically a guitarist thing.
Thanks for clearing that up. "If the gain is set, just before clipping and then you add the middle, or anything else, it will tip it over the edge but just adding middle, will not create distortion". is what I said. Seem like that is what has been said here. I shall put my point across again. Cheers.

Hi. In the UK, anything from £250, slightly battered and possible alteration to the electrics, no original case to dealer prices for a good one with original case - £495. http://www.classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/guitar/peaveyt60tb.htm I have collected mine over the years so would sit around the middle of that for a nice one. I have been thinking of breaking down the collection of T-60's for a couple of years now, so if you are interested, let me know. Got all sorts - Early Toaster/Slab and later Blade/Contoured. Really nice guitars - only really appreciated once you have actually played one! Cheers.

"Adding middle creates distortion and causes the notes to break up, it's a well known fact" A quote taken from a guitarist, last night. "Back the middle of and you'll always get a cleaner sound" was the other. There followed another 20 minutes of light hearted banter, with me pointing out that I had not heard that one. It may enhance the distortion on a guitar amp but on a bass amp?? Can anyone with expertise enlighten me? Cheers.

Hi. I pop in here how and again but have not joined in yet. I also visit "The Dark Side" - things with skinny strings that wail in the night!! Here are some of mine. Perhaps one of my favourite Peavey T-60's - Yes, I have a whole bunch of them, as well!! Something a bit special from Ibanez. Finally, one of my favourite photgraphs. To get this shot took me several hours!!! Pro Photogs please feel free to point out any of my failings!! I like it! Peter Cook Twin Neck, from around 1973-74.

Nice track! Using an earlier "Toaster". I am still breaking down my collection of Forty's but will still end up with maybe five or 6 of them, as keepers. You may be interested in one of them. So, I'll be in touch, via PM. Cheers.

After some lenghty discussions, asking all the right questions, bought my PB70. Once the deal was set, payment came in at Warp Speed Very easy to deal with. All the best. Cheers.

Hi. Been out of the loop for a few days. It looks like you are sorted - if you still want the pic, let me know. Cheers.

Would a picture of the cavity help? I have two of these. Both have two position, so are the Elite. I have had basses in the past where someone has used a three position in place of a two, as I quess that's all they had at the time! I can get you a close up shot, if you wish. This is mine. If I remember correctly, the weight of this thing is well over that of a Peavey T-40!! Picked it up when I met BRX at a Nottingham bass day. H E A V E Y! Played it all night???? Cheers.
Hi, I just bought a bass off a friend and they said it's a Westbury 'Les Paul' Bass Guitar however it has no markings on it anywhere apart from on the back it says "Made in Japan" anybody know what it is? Here's a picture: http://sucs.org/~kais58/DSCF5010.JPG Thanks for any help.
Avon Rose Morris, Sumbro, Grant or similar, I would say. Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
FlatEric replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Just read the post above and on the listing is "other things you may like". Spotted this. Great feel, nice neck, punchy sound - I have three of them, did an outdoor thing at the weekend with mine (identical to the one listed) everyone one said what a great sound it was. Not much money for a Very Nice bass. -
Looks like a heavily modified Fender Precision Elite II to me.
Yep, that's where my thoughts were but I'm not certain that it is.

I was watching Vintage TV, the other night - usually some interesting stuff and you get to see kit that bands were uing years ago. Moody Blues were on twice and in both videos, John Lodge was playing this: I tried to pin down what it was but without any luck. Any ideas? I also came across a nice Twin Neck, whilst looking for the P. Interesting! Cheers.

If this will help. . . . We do mainly Classic Rock and usually, these work a treat: Hard to Handle - Black Crowes version Caroline Thunderbird by ZZ Top (most people have never heard it but it gets them going) also Sharp dressed man. Sweet Home and Gimme 3 Steps - Skynyrd Stick together - Roxy I want to break free - Queen. Teenage Kicks I believe in a thing called love - Darkness Whole lotta Rosie normally works but not always - + others I have forgotten but there are two sure fire winners - Old as the hills. . . . Johnny be good and Route 66, never fails.
-
Sorry to be so flipant. . . . Nice bass, I have one that is identical but my first glance had me marveling at your Photoshop skills - a mate has some wallpaper like that and I was trying to see how you had got the shot and then realised it is on a bed? Doh! Irl get me coat! Cheers.

Lucky man! A VERY nice bass! Enjoy. Cheers.
+1, Likewise, wouldn't dream of gigging my '85 Gibbo Explorer without the hard case! On the upside, at least the necks are maple rather than mahogany (as on the more fragile T'birds) Downside is the case is the size of the deck of an aircraft carrier....
I'm with you but you are correct, a case for one of these is a bit on the large side!!
-
Ahhhhgggg! Don't do it!! That is a rare old beast you have there! Slight mishap with the bass in a gig bag, and that head is going to suffer some damage!! Your case looks like the one it took me ages to find for mine. Once it's gone, you may struggle to find another one. Just something to think about. Cheers. PS I have only ever seen a handful of these in the UK. I wonder how many there are?
The tear drop one?
Yep, that's one of them!

Hey, not the worst I have seen!! Give me a couple of days to dig out the images and then I'll post them. They are BAD!!! Cheers.
-
Alex, you have WAY too much time on your hands!!! Errm, Great Job! As you say, looks different from the "norm" Cheers.
