1983 ibanez roadstar II series with wierd pickup problem
FlatEric replied to Paulo Silva's topic in Repairs and Technical
I'm going to follow your advice and the first thing I'm going to do is wire the pickups to the jack socket one at a time. one thing I noticed is that the 3 way switch only works in between positions. I'm guessing that the main problem is the switch.
If you are going to direct wire and there is no issue with either pick-up, I think you will be surprised at how powerful it is, if mine is anything to go by. Good luck. Cheers. -
When you've finished sanding, should look like this with a finish on it. Please ignore the holes!! When I went to see Doug, I took this one with me as well, hoping he would say "this is the scratchplate for it" What he actually said was "dunno what the holes are for, none of the ones I made had a plate on 'em" Nuts! When you have finished you will have a very fine sounding and playing bass. Lucky man! Cheers.

1983 ibanez roadstar II series with wierd pickup problem
I've just traded this beautifull Ibanez and the thing is: the wood are in great shape, the neck is straight and the truss-rod work fine in both ways. the tuners need to be replaced, no big deal... the main problem are the pickpus. the p-pickup work fine but doesn't have the output volume that I was expecting. the bridge pickup has a switch that's messing up the tone and output volume. should I remove the original pickups and replace them with modern soapbars our should I re-wire the original for keeping the value of the bass. the alternative that I like the most are the Delano's SBC4 HE/S. How can I solve this situation? my main concern is to get the pickups the reproduce faithfully the natural sound of the instrument.
Hi. I have the single pick-up version, the RB920 - yours is the RB924. The pick-ups should have a fairly high output - I wouldn't change them, unless it is something serious. The switch is Ibanez Tri-Sound. Humbucker - Single Coil (the one nearer the neck, from memory) and Parallel Coils. This, I think, is a std DPDT switch - that may be the cause of some of your trouble. Cleaner in the pots would help to see if it would improve the sound - especially the blend pot. Stick with it and try and keep it standard , if you can. Cheers. -
Thanks Eric, been having a think and I reckon I'm gonna keep it battered. Frets definitely need some work though, and it's for keeps I'm all about the punch!
Excellent! I think you know you have done the right thing!! Spend the $$$$ on a pro fret set up and get straight back into playing it - I will certainly be playing mine a bit more often. Keep on Punching!! Cheers.

Awsome, a cracker!! Not heavy. . . . . . . . . Just solid!!!!!!!!!!! A rare bass, in that codition, lucky man! More pics when you get it??? Cheers.

Aha!! You are here as well!! Welcome to the fold. Some good friends on here Coco, is a big fan and has a Toaster and. . . . . . a Blade! It will take a little while and some playing around with your amp EQ - not to correct anything but to accentuateal the different tones posible. Ash (Coco) has almost the same gigging settings as mine but for a whole bunch of other sounds/tones, best to sit down in fornt of your rig with the volume turned way down and dial in all the variations. Write them down, set each one and then turn up to rehearsal/ gigging volume. If you want any help/advice/tips/technical/history. . . . . anything, happy to answer your call. Cheers.
My Blazer cost me £160!! Truckstop
See, I told you $$$$ doesn't always make tone! For anyone who knows me, knows I have some unusual gear and some great stuff but on the other hand, I have learned, over the last 35 odd years that sometime you just come across something that works for you. Some very surprising basses!!!! I may draw up a list! Cheers.

Hi - Just spotted this. I have this: http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/aria-sb-505-and-little-bit-of-jaydee.html Played very little, had it from new - 5 string players say it's a cracker but I just can't get on with 5 strings!! This is the only five string I have, out of a mountain of four strings and it is in your budget. Whadaythink?? Cheers.
I thought you might be interested, I nearly dropped you a PM with a request for info seeing how you'd met the builder of the original. Thanks to everyone for the supportive comments by the way. Spec wise, I've not quite made my mind up yet whether or not to go for a close aesthetic copy or a 'homage'. I'm currently inclined towards the former. Having had a closer look at the bass in the Bass Culture book this morning a couple of things come to mind: Hardware, looks like earlier Thunderbird electrics and bridge - not sure how I'll replicate this, originals will be out of budget Body, not sure what type of Explorer body was used, it looks to me as if some remodelling of the lower horn had taken place to allow fret access but I've not completed the research yet
From what I remember. . . . The body was drawn up by Peter, Explorer shape and sized to keep everything in scale, so it doesn't match up exactly with any other Explorer shaped bass. It had a raised centre section, as per a Thunderbird, used Thunderbird electrics and bridge and of course the P neck and tuners. From memory, the body was made from Mahogany. There are various makers around the world "Who" have done this before, many times, so it will be interesting to see how the project moves forward. Good luck. Cheers.

Mmmm, Interesting. . . . . . Good luck with your build. Cheers.
I have joined this site to try to sell my lovely Kasuga bass, age unknown, but in excellent condition except for intermittently sticky pick-up selector switch. It comes with hard case, strap and stand. £400 the lot, plus postage, if not collecting in person. Beauly area (Inverness-shire). I put this bass on Ebay 3 times last week, but my ad was pulled and then my account was suspended as Rickenbacker got upset. John Hall was incredibly rude to me, when I challenged their censorship and he signed off with "have a nice life" ! Unbelievable. I had refined the ad so that it simply said "Bass guitar" and I didn't even offer a description! Feel free to ask me easy questions. Selling Peavey KB300 amp separately, too. Cheers.
Looks very nice. I think Jon - Bassassin, has one of these, so can't be bad. Cheers.
Hey, this site has been a prime lurking spot during months of pedal purchases so I figured I'd join up and see if I can give anything back! I was a guitarist for years before switching to bass in a ska and then thrash metal band where I realised that I'd wasted years of my life because I was far more at home with two less strings and an octave lower My main musical output is KOSS (http://www.kossband.com the music is all free to download/listen to) which is a two-piece (bass and drums), also playing bits and pieces in other bands. Setup-wise: Ibanez 1980 Blazer Bass Ibanez 1977 Eagle Bass EHX Microsynth Blackstar HT-Dist EHX Polychorus EHX Memory Toy Orange OR120 Ashdown 115 I have a tonne of other pedals that I've accumulated over the years, I'm planning to do some demos of my collection when I have a day free which, of course I'll post here. Annnnyhow, hope I can bring something to the community! He's the requisite gear pics!
Ooo, a couple of really rare basses you have there. The Series 1 Blazers are "The Dogs" and the Eagle is a rare bird. Nice! Cheers.
Okay, this is one to test your skill with the internet, and your love for basses. I just posted my latest pictures of my collection to my Facebook page. Since there are over 100 shots of them, its too much to put here. Take a look at my collection, found under these two Facebook links: http://www.facebook....17046005&type=3 http://www.facebook....17046005&type=3 Tell me what you think, which ones you like. I am currently looking to thin the herd, so I'm also up for offers. I'm not saying I will sell any particular one, but I know there are some out there who might want something I currently covet. Cheers!
Ahhh, you have to log in Facebook!! Bit slow on the old Facebook thing but cracked it now. Nice collection, some unusual gear. What type of music do you play? Out of all my stuff, I dont have any of the ones you have! Note to self: Eric, you must try harder! Cheers.

Sorry to Hijack this thread but. . . . . . . . Having replied to your post, I took my 301 to rehearsal last night. I haven't played it for about two years - had a minor crack around the jack socket, took the plate off ages ago. . . . long story but decided to keep it the way it was - "Character" I had forgotten what a bright, punchy big sounding bass this is and . . . . . with Roto Flats on - my only fretted bass with flats. VERY impressed - everyone said what a great sound it had. Well chuffed. Good luck with your re-finish. Cheers.
Hi, as promised a couple of photos of the Tbird. Not great pics, but someone out there in bass land might recognise it
Hi. Could you scan these to a higher res - would like to send them to Peter. The other thing is, I would put the word out and see if anybody knows where it is now. Cheers.
