. . . . . . . . . . . in fact I love playing a different bass every gig or practice.
I too like the variety of change, keeps our guitarist busy - he likes to let me know which ones sound good and which ones don't. As he doesn't know what they are or how much they cost, it is interesting to hear his comments. He has a very good ear for sounds and tones and will quite often give a big thumbs up for something that wasn't much at all. I have often felt it is what you are comfortable with, feel and sound wise and not relative to the cost of the instrument. So, to keep on topic, I quite often feel a warm glow when something for not many $$$, ticks all the boxes and gets the thumbs up. The most surprising thumbs up from our guitarist. . . . . . . A Crafter Cruiser, Ric shaped thing. Active, nice to play, only bought it because it had a nice case These are £80 to £100 ish, most less than £80 and are a nice bass. . . . . Honest!! Cheers.

For me, I get on OK, with V V T but live, it's a bit of a pain when you are "on the hoof!" So, because of that, once I have set everything on a soundcheck, I very rarely "fiddle" with the controls. On the basses I have with a blend, I am happy to lift the volume (guitarist pointing to his ear and the ceiling! ) or rein it in a bit (guitarist with finger in ear!) without altering the tone that I have set up/am happy with. On the basses with a selector switch, I never use them - just leave them in the middle. But that's just me!
Very nice, is that a muting system I see by the bridge?
Hi. As you can see, it is a Ric bridge, so has the same adjustable damping in it.
Wow that's in great nick! Looking forward to the feature on it.
It's the best I could find! A bit unusual?? Feature coming up soon. Pic of the Modules in mine - will explain all the others on the Blog. Cheers,

I haven't posted anything in this section for ages but I think this is worthy of a mention. I know Nick (Doctorofthebass) has one and Nigel did a well documented build of a Chris Squire "Tribute" version. I mentioned at the time that I had one but as the saying goes, no pics- it doesn't exist! Up to yesterday, the only shots I had were some iffy ones that I sent to Jon, Bassassin but the weren't very good at all, so went west!! So, here it is - a not very often seen instrument on this side of the pond. **Now sits and waits whilst two dozen more turn up!!** I will be doing a big feature on it, in my Collection Blog, in the next post - explaining about the Modules, the sounds, the switching, and how it plays. Cheers.

Hi. They are not really heavy, the neck has a nice round profile that is comfortable. Not Jazz and not Tree Trunk, little bit beefier than a P. The pick-up looks "Fat Humbucker" but is actually four small coils and not thuddy like an old EBO. Back one is bright and sounds like you are picking the strings close to the bridge, if that makes sense! Get some great sounds out of it - I run mine in Stereo, on the ocassions I can be bothered to set it all up. Nice bass, would be interested to know what you think of it. This one is mine. http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/ovation-magnum-bass.html Some pics when you get it?? Cheers.

Hi John, Welcome - plenty of 50 somethings on here!! I did the Guitar - Bass - Guitar - Bass thing at around the same time. After many years, I decided to "come out" and declare my love for the lower end and although I still dabble with the Dark side of 6 &12, most of the time it's FOUR! Loads of things to see and do on here. Cheers.

Very Nice, overshadowed by the T-40. As said above, more P about these, although they pack more of a punch, from my experience. Different to the T-40, as it has a Volume, a coil select/tone and a second tone. Why? Because on the T-45, you can rein in the Single coil and use alongside the primary tone, to add subtlties. The myth about Ten Ton T-40's isn't exactly true - not all are on the weighty side and as they balance very well, the weight doesn't show as much as you would think - and there are basses a lot heavier than a T-40. My point. . . . . well, the the T-45 has more frets, different body shape, which I know looks the same but it isn't, trust me . . . and. . . . . it is Heavy! There is a rear rout for the sparks and the void for the pick-up but the rest of it is SOLID WOOD!!! Have a look here for details: http://www.peavey.com/assets/literature/manuals/80370359.pdf Quite rare over here - mine is in hospital (stripped and in it's case) pending a re-fret! Got a pic somewhere. If thinking of buying - add carriage, then add 20% VAT, then add handling charge - usually around £12.00 As I said, does look like a nice one - these were not a budget T-40, they sold at around the same price when new. Cheers.

Techy question - Bass into laptop running youtube
FlatEric replied to FlatEric's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for all your input. Not had chance to try the "Plug it direct into the laptop" method yet - will do tonight. To be honest, it seems that all the other solutions would leave me with the situation I have now - I have to use something else, The Tascam, to get it all to work smoothly. Suggested methods are a mixer, a USB interface etc which is not really trimming down the set up. Again, thanks for all your thoughts - I will try the direct way and let you know how I get on. Cheers. -
For what it's worth. . . . . If anyone is leaning towards taking this on board. . . . . I have two of these. Very punchy, a lot of clarity that can be restrained with the tone controls, each note has a real presence. Anyone who has put a Precision up against one of these will know what I am talking about. A simple bass, nothing fancy but with a half decent amp, would remove kidney stones at 10 foot!!! I mean it!! Cheers.

Techy question - Bass into laptop running youtube
FlatEric replied to FlatEric's topic in General Discussion
Not a problem in theory but onboard sound on laptops can sometimes incur latency which means there may be some lag between what you play and what you hear - very annoying. Maybe they've got better since I last tried it, but ever since then I have always used an external USB sound interface for getting bass into computer.
This is all good stuff! Hi Neep! What USB thing do you use? Cheers. -
Techy question - Bass into laptop running youtube
FlatEric replied to FlatEric's topic in General Discussion
Do that! You need a lead that's got a mono 1/4 jack on one end (for plugging into bass or end of fx chain) & a stereo 3.5 jack on the other end with just tip & shield connected (don't connect anything to the ring) & that's it. It's what I do to record on my mac. Better results than going through the Alesis usb mixer!
Hi. Whilst running youtube, will the soundcard allow the bass to just run alongside it, no other software? Cheers. -
Help from some techies needed! Learning covers. Back in the old days. . . . . you got your vinyl album on the turntable and pushed it back and forth to learn that "tricky bit"! Then came cassette tapes, then came the Tascam. Now, to make things a bit easier for us to all be doing the same version, we send a youtube link to each other and learn from that - works a treat! To do this, I take the "headphone out", from the laptop - run it to the "Line in" on my old Tascam, plug the bass into the Tascam and take the headphone feed, also from the Tascam. A lot of mucking around! So, is there a way of plugging the bass into the mic socket and playing along to youtube, listening on the laptop headphone socket - in other words, not using the Tascam?? I haven't tried it, as I wasn't too sure if something would go BANG! Techies, away you go! Cheers.

FlatEric replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Interesting bit of blurb there, but I wonder how much of it is true?
Amazing! Here we go again! This was mine, until last year - see here: http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2010/08/photography-and-couple-of-cort-kay.html They aren't that rare. I had Two!! Rob's got one - http://www.whitstableguitars.co.uk/1980skaycortvintagebass.htm To my knowledge, this has now been "Flipped" four times, I think. Why???????????? This and it's mate are really nice basses. Jon - Bassassin, also had one. They are are never going to be an Alembic but would easily hold it's own against a lot of things that are a lot more expensive! Hey Ho. PS The knobs that were on it when I had it, were the same as all the others I have seen - BLACK! Cheers. -

Just bought an Ashdown Cab from Rob - I was in a bit of a rush, so he carried it down three floors for me and we met at the front door!! Top man! Yet to plug it in but looks in VERY good condition. Thanks mate, sweet deal. Cheers.
