I've never listened to My Bloody Valentine so I don't know about their guitarist's technique specifically but I do know that Les Claypool is a prominent bassist who does use a tremolo on his bass. Maybe check him out?

Any law that is to have retrospective effect in this country must clearly state that it is to have retrospective effect. If you imported the bass before the Regulations came into effect, you shouldn't have any problems at all. That's not my professional opinion but this is going to be an interesting problem for a little while. I know Marshall stopped producing one line of guitar amps and replaced it with a new model so as to meet the requirements of the regulations.

All the laydeez in da house say yooooooooooo!!

Just 'cos CK dresses as a middle-aged woman in his avatar, don't be fooled. Approach with extreme caution. :brow: -
Great looking bass. I do love Warwicks. Now I just need to find a 5-string FNA Jazzman going cheap and I'm sorted.
-
Cheaper than an A/B box would be a simple cable: 2 x Female 1/4" to 1 x Male 1/4". Plug the last cable in the chain from the double bass into one of the female 1/4" and the last cable in the chain from the bass guitar into the other female 1/4", then plug the Male 1/4" into the tuner / amp. You'd have to match the levels of the double bass and bass guitar before they go into the amp, unless you don't mind fiddling with the amp in between songs. I think everyone else might find that annoying though.

Epifani cab question - just idle thinking at mo'
The Funk replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
But don't the Ohms not work then with the 8 Ohm UL115 (5.3+8 through a 4 Ohm head)? Never really understood these things but assumed you could only run two 8Ohm cabs through a 4Ohm head
You're right. So I guess the only option you have is the 8ohm UL210. -
Epifani cab question - just idle thinking at mo'
The Funk replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
You could always compromise between the UL210 and UL410 by getting a UL310. -
Dennis Cornell - what a don. The guy builds Clapton's amps. I asked him about getting one of his studio (guitar) amps with a different speaker. He said the speaker I was after was identical to a Fender branded one that was built by Jensen. He said he had one lying around and could put it in for me. He sounded like he thought I was speaking in Martian when I asked him how much extra it would cost for the upgraded speaker. He did it for nothing. I've asked him about a couple of things since - very cool guy. When you ring the company, you always get him on the phone personally.
As for the rest, yeah,Wunjo's is probably the pick of the bunch, although they're still very expensive. I doubt I'd ever spend money in Denmark Street.
Brian at Wunjo will always do deals on things in the shop. A lot of the time you don't even have to ask.

What does everyone find all these amps and cabs?
The Funk replied to trent900's topic in Amps and Cabs
I will absolutely not tell someone what to buy - I would hate it if they bought what I said and did not like it. My idea of a good sound may not be the same as anyone elses and frankly all the guys that just recommend what they use (sometimes without even reading the OP properly) wind me up.
Some really good comments in this thread. I don't think there's a single thing I disagree with so far. When it comes to recommending equipment, be wary of any comments along the lines of "you can't go wrong with...". The type of rig you should get depends on what sound you're after - and what sound will actually work live - in the band or bands you're in. You can research what kinds of rigs people use for different types of sounds but bear in mind the fact that records probably won't help you as people use all kinds of equipment in the studio that they would never use live. -
from now on my custom goes to Feline guitars in croydon who ive always experienced 1st class service from.
I once gave them 6 guitars to upgrade/set up in a week. They did it on time and did a great job on all 6. Jonathan let me try out two of the Feline basses there too. The Stingray clone was the best Stingray I've ever played - cheaper than a new Musicman one too. Very nice guy who's very knowledgeable and who always does a great job. Can't really argue with that, eh?

What does everyone find all these amps and cabs?
The Funk replied to trent900's topic in Amps and Cabs
those of you who have all these wacky amps - how did you hear about them? And second - where did you try them?
Wacky? Sites like basschat are excellent to find out about amps that aren't necessarily stocked in your local shop. Trying them out is difficult, hence the large number of people who GAS for things then sell them on. There's nothing wrong with Gallien-Krueger heads or the big, old, valve Ampeg and Trace Elliott heads. I'm not really a fan of any of their cabs but I think it takes owning and getting to know a few bits of gear before you really know what sound you like and what equpiment works for you. All bass amps - even the budget ones - are too expensive to just buy at random and then continually chop and change. Try as many as you can and check out other people's rigs as much as possible too - even from the crowd at gigs. When you do buy, be prepared for the fact that you might want to change some of it further on down the line for various reasons. The quick answer though is to waste one weekend going to London and spend the whole of Saturday at The Gallery trying everything they have. Eden, Epifani, Aguilar and Genz Benz are hardly stocked in the UK anywhere. There are a couple of other places but I think they're both in the South East too. -
Acoustic Image Focus SA: (600W) 3.5 lbs £ SOLD !!!
The Funk replied to eubassix's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
How long have you been sitting on this? I know it might be frowned upon but if I were you I'd mention this sale in one of the relevant threads in the Amps forum. A lot of people have been asking about small power amps. That's smaller than my Eden WTX-260 (ie. gig bag pouch size) with more than twice the power. Looks like a great solution for people with an EBS Microbass II preamp or equivalent. I probably would have taken it off you a month or two ago. -
My actual point though was more that a rhythm that is simple, straight (using that term in it's loosest sense) and little more than metronomic only serves as the foundation for what you hear/feel/play.
Still not really getting what you're asking. Maybe it's too abstract and philosophical a question for me? All I know is that I sound good playing with a good drummer and crap playing with a crap drummer. I'm sure that doesn't answer your question though. Were you saying something like "there's a difference between 'beat', 'rhythm' and 'feel' and as bassists we can inject any feel we like into a simple beat"? I'm not sure I agree with that. Having played with some drummers who don't understand pushes or swing-funk, I find it impossible to inject any bounce into what they play. If they've got bad feel, I won't play with them.

You could start a website and make some money from it. People are into all kinds of freaky online.

I liked the video I saw on "1 finger per fret". It makes total sense to me and I think I already do what you say.
-
Did you start a thread a couple of months ago about power attenuators? Personally, I think it would be worth it to sell those things to get the head you really want. Then the only question is cabs!
-
Hi. There were about five or six other threads about this earlier in the week. One of them's still going strong in Off-topic.
do you think any of this would apply if it was YOUR instrument?
Only if I became one of the most well respected players in the world and then died. Dweezil Zappa's pretty happy about playing the remnants of Hendrix's Monterey guitar. I think I would be too, not because of the instrument itself but who actually once played it. -
I don't get what you're saying, sorry. I'm sure you do though. A drummer might wonder how you can hear a swing feel when a click or drum machine is programmed with a straight feel.
I'm in the process of building something like this for another member of this forum. I will have a 400 Watt digital amp module and a switch mode power supply, all in a black anodised aluminium case 220 x 160 x 52 mm, for an all-up weight of around 1.5 - 2 kg. If you're interested, send me a PM, and I'll keep you posted as the build progresses. Andy
Would you mind doing a build diary for this?
Your Acme B1 may make the amp sound less like 260w and more like 80w I suspect. I tried one of these heads in the Bass Gallery and, shortly before the fuse blew out, it sounded good but at the absolute minimum in terms of volume that I'd need to compete with a drummer unless I had an ultra sensitive cab. Thats why I asked Alex if I could (unfortunately) try it with the EBS 2x12 neo. Thanks to the fuse going, I didn't get to test the difference. Might have another go next time I'm up there though.
It's louder than my Gallien-Krueger MB150S (which is only 100W). I need to get my arse in gear, give it a proper work out and submit a full review. I only want it for the smaller gigs (or multi-band gigs) where I'll be going through the PA but don't want to hear my bass through a crappy monitor. It can't replace my big rig and wasn't intended for that purpose. Even though it pumps out a theoretical 290W in the UK, it will not sound as loud as my old 280W GK head through a Hartke 2x10 and 1x15, but then it's just coming out of one 10" speaker. My initial impressions are that it's louder, cleaner, deeper, fuller and more airy than the GK MB150S (and far less noisy). I do still marvel at the MB150S but I'd feel safer taking this to a gig. Until I've actually gigged it I won't be able to tell you guys how it copes.

Really like the band! I'll have to check out one of your gigs soon!
