1.
OK...so the little giant 1000 has two mono 500 watt amps and it is solid state. Would that not mean you can run one amp and leave the other amp disconnected since solid state amps do not need to be connected to a speaker (contrary to tube amps)? So presuming that is correct the concerns of having to run two 4 ohm cabs with the LG 1000 seem unfounded. Please do correct me if I am wrong.
This is exactly what I would have thought. Just leave one side unconnected.
2. I think body wood makes a huge difference. Even with different pick-ups and active electronics some bumps and gaps in the frequencies just can't be masked - and some shouldn't be!
3. I never realised tuning up could be a matter of life and death.
4. I bought a weird 70s Fender head off him a couple of months ago. Wunjo were selling it on commission. I'm not really familiar with him or his playing but I haven't managed to find any pictures or videos with him using the amp. (Fender 400PS, in case anyone was wondering.)
5.
4. Without selling - a wife, b daughter
6.
You definitely win the prize for greatest number of threads started to choose one rig!
Hah, yes.
7. There's no way of doing this as far as I know. Once it's been mixed as a Left and Right stereo track, that's all you've got. Even trying to isolate the frequencies might not work as there'll be some kind of blend and overlap between instruments.
8.
Good guy, pity about his bass playing though
Jeez, any type of bass playing you actually do like? I've heard Billy Sheehan is one of the nicest guys around. Noone's had a bad word to say about him.
9. Damn! The lead singer was in a band (and a movie) with Bouff!
10.
However, the fact is that it's not brilliant, and doesn't give the kind of lasting callus you need. Unfortunately, the best course is to let the blister heal, then practise just enough every day as to avoid getting another and gradually build up hard skin.
I once ended up with an unburst and bloody blister underneath a callus after a weekend of heavy playing. I've never known anything to work for me when my fingertips are buggered - apart from playing through the pain and waiting for the burst.
11.
Plenty of high mid boost. Maybe even cut the low mid for slap.
This is what Eden's "Enhance" knob does and it seems to work.
12. I've had this problem when I've had to go through other people's amps, such as Ashdowns. It's the guys with MM-style pickups that always seem to cut through no matter what rig they're going through. I reckon just stick with boosting the mids, even if it sounds a little harsh to you. At least you'll be heard out front.
13. If you're used to playing with your fretting hand thumb hanging over the top of the fretboard, you'll be buggered on a Warwick. If you use a more orthodox thumb placement (no higher than half-way up the middle of the neck), then you should be fine. Get your elbows out and your wrists as straight as possible. Whatever angle and height you need to have the bass at in order to achieve that with your elbows, wrists and fretting hand thumb, it can be found with a bit of experimentation. Even after all that and after persevering with it for a while, you may decide that you just play better on different profile necks. Early Warwicks ('91 or earlier I believe) have a different neck profile. But you may find the right bass for you isn't a Warwick at all.
14.
but she's a bit young to join a band just yet!
I'd never dream of telling you how to raise your kids but she's not too young to join a band. 13 is the perfect age to get together with friends or acquaintances at school and start a band. EDIT: I see I'm not the only one to make this point. Ste's 17 and he's playing Glasto this year with his band. Pretty cool, eh?
15. I really like Vintage&Rare. I don't think they're overpriced. After all, they're selling vintage and rare guitars (and basses and amps). And they're nice enough to let you try out guitars they know and you know you can't afford. And they have vintage basses in there that are cheaper than the new basses across the road at the Bass Cellar (who are a bunch of ****s). As for the rest of the shops on Denmark Street, yes, they're overpriced (with the exception of Wunjo).
16.
it leads me, via a roundabout mental route, to wonder when people will realise that all amps sound more or less the same
I strongly disagree with the idea that all amps sound more or less the same. As much of the sound of a bass guitar comes from the preamp section of an amp as from the bass guitar itself or the cabs you send it all through. The Shuttle looks cool compared to the competition because they've actually managed to fit a valve in the preamp there. I can't wait to see where this technology goes. With my Eden WTX-260 I feel like I have a Generation One iPod. I know it'll be obsolete soon but it's still exciting.
17. I think ERBs are cool. I'm not enough of a soloist or accompanist to use one properly. But I think rather than get a Fender Stratocaster headstock-shaped coffee table, an actual bass guitar would be awesome. Garish, yes; babe-repellant, yes; but awesome nonetheless.
18. Prepare by asking them these things in advance of the audition. You might impress them just by being the only one who actually thought to ask. During the audition, check out the drummer. If the drummer's crap then the rest of the band had better be really, really good to make up for the fact that you will sound rubbish as a rhythm section for as long as he or she is still behind the kit. It the drummer's good then it really doesn't matter if everyone else is rubbish. I've had one audition ever. I turned up two hours late (got lost and then lost again) and asked them right afterwards if I'd got it. That one went alright actually. Leave the effects at home - as well as the monster gig rig if you have one. Don't turn up with a practice amp though either. (If there's backline there, don't bring an amp). If they're a folk band, don't dress like you'd rather be in Metallica. People are so shallow that getting the gig will probably have very little to do with your playing - unless your playing fits perfectly.
19. Someone managed to forget there's this big place called Asia with half the world's people in it.
20. I quite like it but I'd never attempt to play it. One day I will get one commissioned for actual use as a coffee table though. They look great! The guys who play them must be seriously strong. That bass has to weigh around 3 times the weight of a standard 4-string.
21.
Or is it that until recently only Walter Woods had worked out how to make this possible?
You're right. It could be that.
22. What's bonkers is the fact that Walter Woods has been making amps like this for over 20 years - but the mass manufacturers have only just realised that an amp that fits in your gig back front pocket is a desirable thing for the gigging musician.
23.
You might have to spend more but this ticks all the boxes.... http://www.cloverbasses.com/index.php?id=9&bass=11
I was going to suggest that. Still haven't got my hands on one yet though.
24. Well, it looks like Eden were one of the first with their WTX-260 but the competitors are managing much more power in roughly the same size (and I think in this case slightly smaller). Obviously if it sounds like crap then there's no point but I have a feeling they won't sound like crap!
25. Good question. Maybe he can't. As he gets older his time will improve too. (Very good player though).
