1.
I tend to hum riffs a lot, then I sit down to work them out on the bass and realise they consist of two or three notes. So I abandon them.
The riff in Billy Cobham's Stratus is only 3 different notes - and it's killer!
 2.
Personally I think he's too lazy to be bothered to learn his parts properly.
He doesn't sound like any kind of perfectionist I've ever encountered. You're better off with a new drummer or a project that winds you up less. If this guy wasn't the way he is, he'd cover the remaining gigs and find a replacement for you. That's what I got our old keyboard player to do when he told me he was moving abroad. And fair play to him, he got the person I wanted.
 3. 95% of the time = happy accident. 5% of the time = hear it in my head first.
 4. Soul-Funk. One of the all-time classics.
 5.
Wouldn't mind giving some Ampegs a go either.
Someone has an Ampeg SVP-Pro preamp for sale at the moment. You could get that, match it with whatever power amp you like and a good, clean pair of 2x10s. You could have the preamp overdrive at any volume. If you get a solid state power amp (likely seeing as there are no currently produced valve power amps), you wouldn't get any power amp overdrive. But that might help give you a more articulate sound.
 6. Yeah, I sometimes get a bit dizzy too. I sometimes lean against my rig so that I don't fall down or pass out. I heard that Jason Newstead once passed out at an early Metallica gig when he was overwhelmed by the heat and the volume. Probably bollocks but still an amusing story.
 7.
Didn't go before a 2 hour gig once...eugh. Was not pleasant.
At one gig a couple of years ago, in between the 2nd and 3rd sets I told the bandleader I needed to go take care of business in the bathroom - and to stall the crowd if I was slightly late getting back. I returned to the stage to hear him finish telling the crowd I was taking a sh*t. I just laughed. What I should have done is ruffle his hair while saying to the crowd: "I didn't wash my hands".
 8. I'd get it set up by a pro. I know a lot of you guys on here can and do set up your basses yourselves but I feel more comfortable paying £30 or so to a pro and getting them to do it exactly how I want it.
 9. Ok, you've got all the advice you need now. Just buy it already! The next thread you start had better be "check out my new rig".
 10.
No mention of Tal Wilkenfeld yet?
Rightly so. Danyel Morgan of Robert Randolph & The Family Band. Good bass player and he was nice enough to message back on myspace.
 11. I'd say the basses aren't the problem. If you like the Chic sound, the Stingray, G&L and Bongo should all do the trick. Update the amp. An Eden head is not a bad way to go. Epifani cabs are also not a bad way to go. Expensive though! The Bass Pod does have an Eden-type setting. In fact, you could get a Line 6 Bass Amp instead of a Pod - I think they have most (or some) of the Pod technology in their amps. Would be a lot cheaper than an Eden head and an Epifani cab. 12.
Was she sober?
You old cynic!
 13. My top gig tip: go to the toilet BEFORE you go onstage. Less chance of cacking yourself.
 14.
Yes it is expensive but then the best usually is. I guess he could get some Behringer gear for a lot less.
I meant if you compare the Bergantino IP112ER (£1299 from Bass Direct UK) to the Bergantino HT112ER (£475 from Bass Direct UK). You could buy 2 Bergantino 1x12 cabs and a power amp for the price of the powered cab.
 15. Hmm... then maybe 2x12s or 4x10s (or 2x 2x10s)? CK raves about the EBS 2x12 cabs. I don't have any experience of 12s apart from the Gallien-Krueger MB series. They wouldn't be enough for you really. I really like the sound of Epifani cabs - clean, clear but still warm. I haven't tried their 2x12 and I'm not sure if anyone on these boards actually owns one. People tend to go for the 2x10, 3x10 or 4x10. The 2x12 is light though - 59 lbs. Check them out. (The 4x10 is 57 lbs though - worth checking them all out). I also really like my Acme cabs - but I don't think most people are ready for that sound yet or happy with the amount of power you need to chuck at the cabs. The main problem with the Acmes is you can't really try them without buying them. As for power amps, the QSCs are good value. I have an RMX but the PLX are much lighter and much more powerful. I don't use the QSC anymore - I have an Eden for that. I wouldn't recommend bass-specific power amps though - they're just not good value for money. I say that even though I love the sound of my Eden. Really a power amp shouldn't make much difference to the sound - but a crap one can do its best to ruin it.
 16.
Many people think that Fender came up with a winning recipe, but there are better 'cooks' out there.
Very well put.
 17. At this mini-festival I was playing last year the sound engineer was delayed getting to the venue. As a favour to the leader of the band who were waiting to soundcheck - who I knew - I offered to do sound so they could soundcheck. I've never received so much backchat, whingeing and complaining from musicians before. I could see the bandleader was embarrassed by the brats in his band. At one point I had to explain to his female vocalist that if she got any more of herself in the monitors, this would happen - cue excruciating "hands-over-the-ears" feedback for everyone in the room. Some musicians just don't have any manners.
 18.
Bergantino powered cabs - IP112ER.
A bit expensive though, isn't it? If you had a Bergantino 12" and a separate power amp it'd be a lot less. Jake - how much noise are you looking to make with the new rig?
 19.
Krist Novoselić, nuff said.
ZING!!! I watched that as it happened as a kid. I swore I'd never pull any stupid stage moves 'cos I may end up looking a tit and end up in hospital.
 20. Really liked what I heard. I'll be in touch soon!
 21. Cheat and buy some books full of patterns and licks. http://www.jazzwise.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=17 If you're struggling to put together a blues solo then you're not copping enough licks from other players: blues/rock guitarists, jazz players and soul/r&b players.
 22.
(eg gig tonight in a restaurant in High Holborn)
Hijack: which restaurant? May pop in for some din-dins.
 23. Belated happy birthday. It's been an eventful but entertaining year. A toast: to absent friends!
 24.
probably is my big stomach? who knows..eheheh
Nature's bass stand
