1. I like it a lot. It's a very clean sound (but still quite warm). Just make sure it doesn't clip.
2. No, you did the right thing. You're a player not a collector.
3.
Which Fender Years / era's have the neck binding and blocks? i'm lovin' it.
'70s. I have a maple one. I'd like a rosewood one. But that's being greedy.
4. They treat everyone like a twat, so I just treat them like a bunch of twats too. I try whatever I want when I'm in the area and want to kill some time - and I never buy anything. The situation was different when Simone worked there but it looks like she left a year or so ago. EDIT: The guys in Vintage & Rare and Wunjo are awesome. Music Ground is ok if a little expensive. Some interesting stock - especially when it comes to pedals. Hank's has a useful stock of acoustics too.
5. I wouldn't play a GK head through an Ampeg cab myself. I'd prefer to use GK, Hartke or Markbass cabs with a GK head. EDIT: Get some 45 gauge Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings your Jazz. It'll thicken up the sound a bit.
6. Newcastle is a very fun city. If you can find an excuse to be there, then definitely make the trip. It shouldn't be hard to come up with an excuse.
7. Cool stuff. I haven't heard him in a long while.
8.
There is no "set" way to play jazz so music college will more likely stunt your growth rather than inspire it.
I'd swap the words 'could' for "will", 'just as' for "more" and 'as' for "rather than", ie. 'There is no "set" way to play jazz so music college could just as likely stunt your growth as inspire it.' All I know is the good players never seem to have that problem. Another benefit that could come from studying jazz at university is that professional work seems to find its way there. I'm not a schooled musician but I know it works for some.
9. That run after MJ sings each line of "speed demon" on the chorus would be all thumb slapped notes on a bass and be a lot more difficult to play on bass than keyboard. By all means feel free to give it a go but I'm not going to try it! Double thumbing wouldn't give you the sound that's on the record (although it would help with speed). Because of the sound used on the keyboard, you'd have to 'down-thumb' every single note.
10. I've never started an introduction thread on any board I've joined.
11. Mr Randall used to work at Fender under Leo Fender. That's all I know. And you probably knew that already.
12. I was looking for reviews of Dave Hall's pedals before he had a website. Bassworld was the only place on the internet for proper info and reviews of his pedals.
13. If someone gets one of these, we should do a shoot-out review with the equivalent Markbass and Eden heads. I'd supply the Eden. My Eden is the smallest, I think (but not by very much), and I think it is the lightest, but in terms of power it gets beaten by the Markbass and thrashed by the Tec Amp. I like where all this technology is heading. There are some gigs where you just want to get in fast and get out fast.
14. No, I don't get it. Either you're making a silly joke or you're making a serious criticism. If you don't like their band ad then you know it's not the type of band you want to be in. If you think their ad is so wrong that it's illegal and shouldn't be allowed then shouldn't you make that clearer? And if you want to offer them helpful advice on how their ad could be improved then you could make that clearer too. I actually agree with your point.
15.
I was just wondering if that's bad for my thumb because sometimes it hurts a bit...
If it hurts a bit it probably won't do any long-term harm if it's a one-off. But assuming you play bass often and for extended periods of time, you could be doing yourself some harm, yes. Try to get your wrist straighter so that your thumb is more upright - and try to not to press so hard with the thumb.
16. Sorry it wasn't funny.
17.
I thought current employment law prohibits vacancies from specifying age as well as sex......
Yes. Do you want to sue them? You know what band ads are like. I've never seen one that didn't indicate a preference regarding age or gender. You could argue they haven't specified which ages they wouldn't consider and by indicating male or female, they've covered both genders - no discrimination on that front. They haven't specified if the bassist would be an employee or a member of the partnership. (I'm not sure if that would make a difference). I'm not trying to be a knob. I just think leave them to it unless you really want to be in the band - in which case audition and show them that the best person for the job is outside the age range they were looking at.
18.
I really liked the Spector 6 string basses that used to be available through SoundControl. I'm not sure what the model was, but as a budget bass, they ticked lots of boxes.
I tried a few of their 5s in Sound Control - the cheap ones. Were the Euro models or something? Can't remember the name either but they played well and sounded very good.
19.
You can play along to cd's until your knob falls off.
Just look at John Meyer
20. That's up there as one of the most awesome gig pics I've ever seen. I don't know why it excites me so much but it freakin' does!
21.
Meh... I'm not buying it. For URB, maybe. Electric bass? Naaaah. Not unless you're doing something colossally stoopid.
I had to change my technique almost overnight back in '06 after playing three 1-hour high tempo sets two nights running (Friday/Saturday) - so 6 hours in all. On the Monday I still couldn't move my wrists. You can do yourself serious injury with a bass guitar.
22. You can get a decent amount for them. They're quite sought after. The "bass" series sounds great for guitar.
23. If you leave one of the ports open, then your 2x10 will be tuned to 35Hz, the same as the equivalent 1x15.
24.
he didn't really seem to play with enough confidence to pull it off.
That would explain some of the sloppiness.
