To be fair whatever my perception of the basses, Sheldon has always come across as a top man.
Absolutely - nothing but praise for your personal approach, Sheldon. It certainly marks you out amongst your peers.

It just wouldn't be surprising, would it?
I was up in Leeds last week for the West Ham game. That's a strange old place. The ghost of Jimmy Saville was spotted on more than one occasion.
Jingle jangle Un-f***ing-believable last minute let off
For any more than that, you'll probably have to wait for Jon to come out of retirement.
I know it's an old thread... but, where is Jon? Does anyone know? Hope he's ok.

The Fly Guitar site is great - many an hour spent browsing through all the goodies on there
Hmm. The article states that it's quite a heavy bass, but on the review is saw on YouTube it says it weighs 7lbs.
As Discreet says, the simple answer is to go and try one. There's a list of stockists by brand on the JHS website.

Bolt-on versus neck-thru for slapping - opinions?
Gust0o replied to Sean's topic in General Discussion
I believe the Fender-patented screw on technique is a new feature of their 2012 pricing policy -
I did have one gig where I couldn't hear myself at all during the first song... and then realised I'd dialled my volume down I know I'm a bell end, but that was new territory for me Does the gramma pad work across the board then? I thought it was just for wooden floors?
-
Ouch - but glad they took it straight back. No wonder he's going red - it's not just that he couldn't work the truss rod, but someone has taken in a broken item... write off time, if they were playing straight. Wonder if they'll just put it back on sale?
We put the acronym for the band in the wall as well drummer sat here before we did any other work. Yes those are subs under the sofa it makes for gallery seating, great way to watch a band practice.
Wipe clean sofa, on top of massive subs - the brown note is well catered for, sir This is a super practice room, very envious. Looks superb, chief.
Try the Auralex Gramma Pad,Pete. They work great on boomy stages.
Is the vibration-cushioning gadget, Doddy?
Honestly,I can't hear a difference between bolt on and neck through...and I seriously doubt that most people (anyone?) can. The only thing that I do like about neck through instruments is the lack of a neck heel,so you can cleanly reach into the upper register.
I thought I could hear a difference... but, in the end, I'm pretty sure you hear what you want. I don't think, for quality basses of both types, there is any substantive difference which would highlight one as being 'better' than the other. -
I like it - plain yet effective. Sometimes less is more
The post directly above was regarding the metal question.
Sorry Sheldon, I was parodying Talkbass I have no doubt they're very versatile instruments. I'd have hell on explaining to the band what the frets were about, and I'm not sure I'd trust a £2k with some of our punters, but I have no doubt they work very, very well
I feel a thread about 'does your bass reflect your personality?' coming on...
Yeah, I'm still looking for a Paisley Fender in just the right pink

When you say 'everyone else', you mean the rest of the band or the crowd? I've had it a few times, normally when our guitarist wanders off for a chat with the soundman post-soundcheck... you get some last-second, unsanctioned twiddles, and it's not quite what you thought you'd achieved through soundcheck. I normally just give him a dead leg for it.
First time I tried an Ampeg I was very underwhelmed. But, it was when I saw a bassist using his Precision through one in a local band, and it sounded so right in the mix that I investigated further. Tuns out that sound I didn`t much like on its own was the same as the one he was using, which just fitted with the band so well. So my attitude changed full-circle. Now "that" Precision/Ampeg sound is my fave.
Again, that's something it took me an age to work out - all that fussing to get the right tone in isolation... and it's often the total opposite of what you need for those nights on stage when you're thinking "f*** me, I sound great!"

Look at all these great Anal **** tracks the punters are missing
I'm talking about 15lb where people class anything over 8.5lb as being heavy... but then they're not tough and manly like me...
That LTD of yours is made of some super-dense dark matter. If you drop it you'll beat the the Large Hadron Collider to the Higgs Boson Still, I hear Chuck Norris likes to play his down by his knees.

We don't get any more requests for Anal **** on the wedding circuit anymore.

Ah, smashing - the old noggin is still working, through the hangover That's awesome you got to play with Karma to Burn - very jealous. In terms of tone, I'm not sure what he used to record - obviously he has a lot of distortion on record, and sometimes his sound isn't overly 'tight', for want of a better word. But the LTD seems to cut it live, giving him a bit more presence, which is probably good with just one guitarist and you doing all the work in a heavy rock band.
I've got a Surveyor 415, which is basically the same as the current Surveyor 5 but a couple of years older. It's a nicely built and finished bass, but it's as subtle as a forging press, and I can't get it to be happy with anything other than super-low action on an absolutely straight neck. Basically it's a metal machine, but coming from ESP, loaded with EMG pickups and preamp, I don't find that at all surprising. Would I recommend it? Difficult to say, really.. if you know what you're getting and that's all you'll ever want then I'm sure you'd be happy, but those wanting an all-rounder might quite rapidly find that whilst it sells versatility with the P / MM (split to J) + 3 band EQ setup, and those tones are all present (and, for what it's worth, quite accurate) the bass itself precludes their use in a vast number of settings. I tried to use it for an acoustic rock project a couple of weeks ago, and it was about as appropriate as singing your kids to sleep through a loudhailer.
I'm pretty sure it's a 414 that the chap from Karma to Burn plays - a great rock bass, but like others of it's ilk (thinking back to the Jacksons and Charvels of this world) perhaps not going to fit into every setting. Still, I love Karma to Burn, so big thumbs up from me

Traded a bass with Dave - great comms throughout; took more shots to ensure I'd seen the bass before meeting; and all very smooth on the trade itself. Cheers Dave, a pleasure to meet and have a natter this morning!
