1. Roundwounds. I don't tend to have a brand preference, as long as they medium guage. But I think two of the fretlesses have Rotosounds.
 2.
Bump for my paper which is due soon. How long is the waiting list for one of these? About a year more or less? Then how long does it take to build it another year? Anyone who owns one know?
I've got one being built at the moment and I think Paul said it'd take about a year (which will give me time to save up to pay for it ).
 3. Well I really like the blue/green, but I have a slightly deeper red 6 string modulus that looks stunning, so it's red for me.
 4. I prefer his old one and although I'm skint at the moment if you're looking to sell Janek, maybe you'll let me pay by installments ?
Who cares?
There's plenty of threads one could say the exact same thing about. It's just people chatting.
 5.
What would be really sweet is if there was a middle ground between just playing 1-5 all night and playing a 10 minute tapping solo that demonstrates the whole gamut of emotion involved in carrying a busty maiden out of the gates of Hades whilst wearing armour made from the bones of the orcs you'd slain that afternoon. But sadly those two extremes are all we've got to work with.
Oh if only I could do a tapping solo to summon up that emotion ! But I'm rubbish at tapping
Now you're splitting hairs. I wasn't Miles off.
And the prize goes to 4000. Very good !
 6.
I do understand why people want to limit their instrument (usually down to their own preconceptions, prejudices or preferences), but I find it irritating when they then expect that others should comform.
Yes, this is a far better way of putting it. EDIT: Oh best colour, obviously purple
 7.
mmmmm... chops....
Damn now that makes me feel hungry
 8.
It's like someone else said though, even if you've got a complete mastery of the instrument and - the really rare element - something actually interesting you're going to play, it would still sound better on another instrument. I think the exception is a bowed double bass. Pizz DB solos sound awful, they just demonstrate what a pig of an instrument it is, but bowed a quality instrument with a quality player sounds stunning.
At the end of the day there's little chance I will convert the non-solo crowd to become solo fans and I think we can both agree that ultimately it's down to your personal taste whether you like the sound of a bass solo. I personally think a good bass solo on a bass guitar sounds better on the bass guitar than on a trumpet or a sax or whatever, I mean each has it's own limitations, it's own timbre etc. You simply cannot get a bass solo sound on a sax or a guitar on a trumpet (and yes I'm sure some will think that's a good thing ). I've certainly not said I want to listen to bass solo's every song but I'd say the exact same thing hearing sax solo's on every song (i.e. I don't wanna here it). Anyway, I'm pretty certain my view in favour of bass solos will be the minority amongst those who post on this topic and that's fine. I'm not here to try to convert anyone, just thought I should put an opposing view
 9.
Haha yeah what a time to multi-post.
Ofcourse if you removed this post I'd looked truly deranged, so better reply to it quick to ensure it remains Anyway, back OT - it's without doubt (and I absolutely concede) that the bass guitar or double bass or general bass producing instruments are less suitable for soloing as the human ear appears better tuned to a higher pitch playing melodies etc. hence why bass guitarists often play above the 10th fret to cut through the mix. One can therefore infer the instrument is less suitable for soloing because of this and even though I have lots of bassist type albums, I find excessive bass soloing tiring. There's no doubt the bass cannot produce the phrasing of a sax or the screams (well nice ones) of a guitar, but I do tend to think they still have a place in terms of soloing. Certainly a good fretless player such as Jaco, Jonas, Yves can create lovely phrasing on a bass. EDIT: Assuming the musician playing it has something to "say" and is not just in it for the chops.
 10.
Over-use of emoticons, to me anyway, makes the writer look at best flustered and angry, and at worst positively deranged.
Certainly looking at the number of deranged is a possibility Duplicate posts also look a little suspect
 11.
Nope - we had got to 50 posts without anyone mentioning the stuff you listed. And, as for a thread that appears every fortnight? I can't remember the last one and I am here pretty much every day. It is not unreasonable for a forum with a constantly moving population to revisit issues that have been touched upon before. The new members may have something to contribute to the debate or find something of use to them in conceptualising their playing and even longer standing members may have come across something that they want to share. I'm off to start a thread about the benefits of reading.
I'm not suggesting it's bad to revisit old ground otherwise I would not have commented. Sorry, I thought my overuse of emoticons would demonstrate my comment was toungue in cheek but possibly not But I do just find it amusing how polarised views are on such a subject.
 12. Ah the old "bassists shouldn't solo" thread. These seem to come round every couple of months. Without reading everything, have we been through the anti slapping, anti tapping, anti chords on bass, anti bass with more than four string (although maybe a low B is allowed in certain cases) phase yet ? What about the higher than the tenth fret is out of bounds thing, has this one come up yet ? I'm guessing fret w**kering or similar has been mentioned by now ? What about, if you want to solo then play guitar instead ? Well, I suppose I may as well add my 2p's worth to this If you don't like it don't do it and don't listen to bands who do, it's really no biggie. Obviously context is everything, I love heavy rock but I absolutely do NOT want to hear a bass solo in it, guitar yes, bass no. I also enjoy some forms of Jazz and I've more than happy to hear a bass solo although by no means would I neccesarily want or expect one on every tune (unless it was a bassists band/album in which case you'd sort of expect it likely to happen on most/all tracks). Like everything else, some solo's can be nice some not so and this can be said for guitar, sax or nose flute solo's. The solo is there to allow the musician to express themselves outside the confines of the structure of the song/music. Certainly (like the previous threads on those numpty's who slap at 100 mph) some people solo to show off their licks, some do it because they feel they have something to contribute to the tune. Admittedly played on a piccolo bass, Stanley Clarke's school days solo is one of the all time greats, but people like Tony Grey play beautiful solo's without pyrotechnics thrown in as does Yves Carbonne. Avishai Cohen does the occasional solo without needing to show his chops because he's so damn good anyway. What I don't get and I doubt I ever will, is those bassist who seem to want to limit their instrument to (massive generalisation time) root and fifth playing. Ah well, each to their own I suppose
 13. You know what I don't think there's anyone I'd want to spend an hour with. The problem I find is that I'm crap at talking to people and I'm bound to say something plain dumb or regret something so it's probably best I don't spend any time with any of those bassists I admire and equally I'd hate to start chatting with somebody and find they're total prats.
 14. As "owned" is past tense then I've got nothing for this list. The very few I've got rid of weren't, in my opinion, that good anyway and I don't miss them at all. Of those I currently own, the top 5 basses (in order of their current positions in the guitar rack, not to be confused with favourite order or the likes ) Sei Jazz 5 string fretted Viglen Passion 4 string delta fretless Wal Custom 4 string Shuker 5 string fretless (not sure of the model) Sei Jazz 5 string fretless
 15. There's a fretless on the front of the old Wal "The sound of electric wood" brochure, which I've always felt was soooooo cooooool. The white starchild Jaydee is also very cool.
 16. I remember two fairly bad gigs not sure which was the worst. I suppose they all turned out okay in the end but at the time were pretty bad. I used to play with a heavy rock band in Leeds (we weren't half bad, drummer and guitarist were fantastic) and we got the chance to play backing band for a singer and keyboard player who worked the working men's club scene around Leeds, Bradford etc. We thought, why the hell not, always good to get some live performances in and earn a little money. Anyway we got our set list, old rock & roll numbers, more recent (for the time) numbers like Walking on the Moon etc. nothing to upsetting to play . Problem was the singer was dreadful. We knew things weren't right early on, but we were the backing band, so we just tried our best. One gig the agent got us was a more youth oriented pub, obviously they weren't that interested in the sort of music we played as it was targetted at a very different audience. Halfway through the first set the guitarist was getting stick for being "crap" (and this guy could play anyone under the table). Anyway got to the interval and the singer decided his throat was not good and was going to leave the gig and I think we were pushing the angle that playing our heavy rock covers set might save the day. So we got up on stage and played our heavy rock covers set list (without vocals), made it to the end of the gig and got paid (eventually, after some haggling). Guitarist got his revenge by walking into the crowd mid "Bark at the moon" solo (if I recall) and offering the loudest critique of his playing the chance to play guitar instead, suffice to say they changed their opinion of him pretty damn quick. Nail in the coffin gig, was either Xmas eve or new years eve (or very near to both, cannot recall for sure). Working men's club hidden away and hard to find so we arrive later than intended and the place is packed to the rafters (few hundred people I think). No time for a proper sound check. We start playing and I cannot recall how far into the set we were but the singer's gear is feedbacking and the numpty turns it up. Anyway suffice to say the boo's start and get worse. We get to the interval and the compare comes across (really nice guy) and says "sorry guys I gotta pay you off" (who could blame him). Anyway, whilst that gig was bad the drummer was superb, he asks the compare if he can use the mic, apologises to the crowd and wishes them a happy new year (or xmas whichever it was). The keyboardists and singer leg it but myself the guitarist and drummer were welcomed for drinks by the people left. That was the last gig that I recall doing with the singer, so I suppose it turned out well in the end
 17. Hi Kevin, welcome back to the "bass zone"
 18. Wow the neck on that Washburn, just wow ! Just as well it was reduced from £9.99 to £6.99 is all I can say. My Wal custom would be first out the window (in it's case ). It's the first "proper" bass I owned and whilst played less than my Sei 5 string has the sentimental value, plus it's just so damned good.
 19.
Sold for £1045 - I thought it would be more like £1300.
I'd say somebody got a bit of a bargain.
 20. That Sei is stunning, mind you so's the Skjold. Good luck with the sale.
 21. Guys many thanks for the positive comments. I've had some enquiries but so far nothing definite. To be honest I'm more than happy to keep it, but it does seem a shame leaving it unplayed.
 22.
If any of you guys are interested I will be selling a black version circa '86 hopefully next week, had it from new, very slightly road worn ( few marks, body only) as it was my main instument back in the late'80's still plays beautifully, custom spec, Ebony quarter lined fingerboard, and has original case! GazzBass
Possibly you'd like to start your own For Sale thread for that ?
