Just playing Jaco for the first time..
purpleblob replied to Dandelion's topic in General Discussion
The "Jaco Pastorius" album is one of the all time greats - Enjoy!
+1 A classic album ! -
I've jettisoned the low "B" string.
purpleblob replied to jazzyitalian's topic in General Discussion
I find no use in the low B in anything I do musically, so all my 5's have E-C tuning. But I do keep a 6 string with a low B just in case -
Congrats !

That's a damn good spec. I hadn't realised they were active as well.

Pretty much whatever you enjoy playing. Just get yourself a good pre-amp and/or amp. simulator and you should be able to dial in most of the sounds you require.
-
Nice, I even like the bright lime green colour Must admit I'd love to try fanned frets someday - just out of curiosity.

ParcelFarce Insurance Claim - A useful letter for you
purpleblob replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
It's pretty despicable of them to try and get out of a claim on a hard shell. I mean (generally) they should take a fair old beating before it's damaged, so make you wonder what the hell they were doing to it. Anyway as for their rejection, I would suspect they're playing the odds. Rejecting all first claims in the hope that a large % may just give up (or maybe I'm just being cynical) Anyway, good work in not settling for their rejection. There's nothing worse than knowing you're right and getting this sort of rubbish. -
Who is your most inspirational bassist?

Stanley Clarke Geddy Lee Jonas Hellborg Mark King Marcus Miller Steve Harris Have all had a massive influence on me. -
All Right Now with slap ...
Oh no - say it ain't so !
-
Absolutely brilliant, superb playing ! Really love the sound you've got as well, really nice kick in the gut tone.

You know what. I started to reply to this a few minutes ago but I couldn't for the life of me remember how I learned to slap. I think you probably sum it up quite eloquently as "hit and miss". I remember seeing the likes of Larry Graham and the brilliant Mark King live on "The Tube" doing a solo piece. I sort of remember bits of (was it called) "Rock School" but I seem to recall I could slap before seeing that. So I think yeah, hit and miss sums up the way I learned. Playing along to Stanley Clarke's School days, day after day probably helped as it's not the most complex slap piece (not like Mr Pink from Level 42).
Its bright f***in pink!
As per the quote. Wow it certainly is going to be bright and pink

There was no option for "No but I wanna learn". Many moons ago I learned theory, scales, harmony etc. but at the time I was a heavy metal bassist and "why the hell would I wanna learn the dots", so I never did. Now I wanna learn just because I like learning different things. Whenever I try to read tab I seem incapable of playing the tune as it really sounds and am often better off just trying to play by ear - but I just do not have to time to sit down with a tune and learn by ear now, so I wanna learn to read. Anyway, just thought I'd say that and now off to the Major's tutorials of sight reading
My cousin has been a pro saxophonist for quite a while. She's done some big tours with top UK and US artists in the last few years. A couple of weeks ago she was miming backing vox and harmonica behind Craig David on the Alan Titchmarsh show - because it pays the rent.
Absolutely. If you wanna be a fulltime musician and earn a living from it, then you take the gigs you can get and take the pay when it's offerred - gotta be better than waiting table or answering phones in a call centre to pay for your music career. Remember also that people like Janek still get to play "their" music off of the proceeds (until their music earns them enough to live off - if it ever does).
Just check this new arrival out - I'm sorry I don't know the owner though I did see this bass in production, but this is what Seis are all about - sheer jaw dropping craftsmanship and attention to detail - and they sound and play amazong too:
Oooooo... I bought a 2nd hand 5-string fretted (Jazz shape) Sei only a few months back from The Gallery (to go with my Sei Jazz fretless) with a similar lacewood/amboina (never know which one it is or if they're the same wood) top to that beauty and I find myself gazing into the grain in a hypnotic way everytime I pick it up (sad I know). I love the way the wood looks like the end of the bass has been dipped in something to give the different colouring to the wood. I can definitely vouch for the craftsmanship of the Sei's, they are very special. Whoever got that one has a lovely instrument.
-
I'm full of admiration and jealousy for anyone capable of building such an instrument and it's lovely to see people come up with different designs. A friend of mine built himself a guitar (including the neck and if I remember incorporated a midi bridge an internal switching for an Axon controller) which was quite amazing too see in it's various stages. Great job.

Holy maccaroni. I've nothing on you guys. I'm going to show the wife this thread when the new instruments I've just ordered (nobody tell the wife!) arrive. I feel so inadequate, but I've had a total of 12 basses in my entire life. I can bump this total up by saying I've also had 7 guitars and 4 guitar/bass combo's and my old Trace Elliot 4x10. Pitiful, I must buy more gear EDIT: Oh and as a cheap skate at least 5 of these instrument were so crap I wish I'd never bought them.

What are you listening to right now?
purpleblob replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Just been looking for a relevent thread to highlight this piece of music - "what are you listening to right now?" seemed as good a place as any Listening to Julian Michel myspace music, particularily like listening to "Make me wah" prior to this was listening to the Peatbog Faeries (but it's not a what were you last listening to thread, really into celtic modern music at the moment ), anyway, back to Julian Michel. -
I like it, very cool.

Have you ever fallen in love.............. with a bass ?
purpleblob replied to redstriper's topic in Bass Guitars
I mean true love, not lust or infatuation - love in the spiritual sense, where it feels like God is playing through you and you never want to be apart.
Nope, I'm afraid with me it's just a lot of lust (usually of other people's basses) Now where's those pics of the Fodera MG I have -
Hi, welcome. There's a lot of people who really appreciate bass around here - have fun :-)
-
Welcome, I think there's a fair few of us knocking on a bit I've got one of the tiny Benz Genz combo's (and extension speaker) and it's just amazingly lightweight - as I don't tend to play live (at the moment) it's perfect for my needs but it's amazing how lightweight some of the kit out there is - sorry going off on a tangent there.... EDIT: Or even Genz Benz - good grief my old age is catching up with me

Is it just me or is this tune INCREDIBLE?
purpleblob replied to Duarte's topic in General Discussion
You may think "pah, Britney", but give it a listen on some semi decent speakers or headphones. I regard this to be a masterpiece, incredible production. I always wonder who he bass players are on tracks like this, because they're always immense.
Production wise, I fell it's over produced. Almost too clinical for my tastes. But each to their own. (I must admit I absolutely hate the song and video so my opinion may not be totally subjective ) -
Welcome. Is it possible to play a status without slapping - wow I never realised
