I've never liked the look of them and never seen the point of them. They just spoil the whole look of a bass, you don't see such paraphernalia on other instruments, like veneered wood inlays over drum skins, chintzy cushions in between hi-hat symbols -no.

You better go and get those high waist band trousers then.

Bought an Ibanez SR300,and a practice amp (for now) - first bass in a long time, sold all my old gear over a decade ago. However, there was a Squire VMJ in the store and I still quite like that one as well. Not exactly the top end of the scale but haven't got the money for more expensive gear, so I aim low. The question is however, how does one get this past the other half? The Ibanez is bright red and is the only bass I have so I couldn't exactly hide any new acquisition amongst my existing collection - of one. Dream GAS on the other hand - a Warwick ( of some kind, always liked them), a Fender Jazz, of some incarnation, an Ampeg rig and one of those TC electronic outfits - for convenience of course.

Squires are generally a good buy, and if you are on a budget then you are getting a lot of bass for your money. Some of it is all down to how much you are willing to pay but I don't think you can rank them easily

Been pondering this one again, and for me the person who encapsulates what a bass player should be is John Entwhistle. Doesn't prance around and let his fingers do the working.

Most of us don't know how to read music because it takes too long. Especially when your crappy job, diy, kids and all those other responsibilities get in the way. Like many others, and as Wii wrote, for me music is a hobby. In my case I don't want to feel I have to learn to read music because that becomes a chore. And then there is the simple case that many of us don't need to read music, personally I'd rather learn more theory. Then there's also the fact that some of the much heralded players can't read music either. Are we going to tell Sir Paul Macartney and Mark King they are lightweights because they can't read music? I tend not to take anything apart so afraid am not much help with that. Just wanted to add that the finish you want looks great. I really like translucent paint effects.

Definitely not me. My passport has run out so I can't leave Devon, and I haven't had my vaccinations. Oh, and I'm not in a band at the moment.

I've obviously got a lot to learn. Always tended to just listen to what sounds good with any given chord - probably need to do a bit more work!
