1. what was that beast of a bass the guy from ZZ Top was playing? looked like a proper project!!
2. Can anyone hazard a guess what body woods were generally used for these builds?
3. tried one of these today - very lush sounding pick up with a lot of output - has the Greasebucket Tone Circuit the maple neck was straight, shallow and easy to play, frets good - not sure the bridge was wholly in right place, but maybe my eyes and the fact I needed a p*** For the price which is averaging about £750/£850 mark from what I've seen online etc, (this one was £999!!) they seem a good instrument but I can't detect any discernable OBVIOUS difference between these and the Am Standard, the latter of which I used to have. Bewilders me the constant upgrade in ranges etc - but it all makes money I guess!! Anyone shed any light on what the Greasebucket tone circuit actually means??
4. were you at PMT?
5. anyone got their hands on one of these yet?? or seen any reviews??
6.
It shouldn't. The fact that it's even mentioned as a possibility saddens me. Are you suggesting that there could be users here who see it as their job to "regulate" the market when the market is quite capable of regulating itself? Sarcasm aside, I'd rather the info was left up, as long as people realise that it's historical trend information rather than an absolute hard and fast rule.
+1 Nothing more to add
7.
I have 2 G&L -L 2000's and lusted after the 'ultimate' USA model. Well I got one and was disappointed as hell. My Trib's are far better imo.
what didn't you like Tom? I had a US L2000 and it was the biz - should never have sold it!!

13.
Funnily enough, that's me on the far left! 'Scandinavians' was actually 4 Brits and a Rhodesian. This guy I knew called Barry Mucas had worked the rigs and heard about the Scandinavian dance band market. Barry wasn't clever, but he was sharp and he could smell a quid a mile away. He roped me and some other guys in and we knocked up a 4 hr set in about a week. For maximum appeal in the Scandinavian market, we decided to call the band 'Scandinavians'. Barry said it would help us to fit in. We bought some secondhand red Danish wedding suits - see above - from Lord John's shop just off Golden Square in the West End and piled off over to Goteborg in a Luton van, sometime in 1974 IIRC. No-one spoke any of the languages. So when we were in Sweden we pretended to be Norwegian. When we were in Norway, we pretended to be Finnish. We didn't go to Finland, but if we had, I think we agreed we'd pretend to be Latvian. Worked a treat, though we got some funny looks. We did about 40 or 50 really well-paid gigs, then 'Beardy' Brian the drummer got into one with some Swedish bikers. They bayonetted his head to the door of a disco in Malmo and the rest of us had to leave a bit hurriedly. It's actually referred to in Hugh Cornwell's autobiography. Great days.
nutter
14. sibob would you say the jazz tones you mentioned are closer to those of the 70's jazzers, ie. bridge pup closer to bridge and funkier brighter etc, or..what? I don't imagine the 80's builds taking a route back to the classic 60's jazz bass sounds so i think my question, is, finally..what does the 83 era offer in terms of the jazz sound?
15. +1 to Peter Allen - top guy and very thorough - i think the price drops a little Tredders after one's first set up?? I've only had the one and can't remember..
16. am I right that Alnico provide more of vintage feel than Ceramic? - I get some sense of this when I listen to the pups in my Nash which are Di Marzio's - they got plenty of power, but they don't articulate with that vintage type sound..
17. been impressing this on my son who has learnt an amazing amount of covers by tabs with his band - they sound great, but i worry what he understands about keys and chords etc.. i'm no theorist but i have forced myself to appreciate and understand as much as poss the science of music because otherwise you'll end up in a situ where someone wants to jam stuff out and you're clueless..
18. well TRB that always worries me with anything active, that eq stands in the way of the heart and soul.. GW - the weight was something i wondered about to be sure
19. I'm not wanting to buy this bass in anyway really, but was browsing, and Ibanez always strike me as quality manufacturers, (I have an 81 Blazer Bass and it's fab), and then I got looking at the ATK310 which seems to be such a well made thing for so little money and yet I personally hear very little about them, or at least they don't seem to appear much on stages, either at pro or club/pub level - it shares some of the retro Fender style so would have thought it appeals in that way... Any users of ATK's want to enthuse? ..okay, I am a little tempted by them. The mint green is particularly nice http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/Bass_Guitars/...1114/p8060.aspx
20. no but saw a mate's FB post that said how the tone was amazing did PF use that plastic tube thing that's attached to the side of his microphone and makes a sort of kazoo type noise? have seen it on a TOTP clip
21. any interest in trades?
22. the JM's are very jazz like and fast - but can see Cocco's POV as the neck widens out a little more than you'd expect round about the 12th/13th, that is compared to a more typical jazz, and is one of the reasons why I keep uhming and aahing about keeping it.. BUT TOP quality bass for a good price and hand made
