Ok, well, I've just received mine...and I don't like it. To qualify - it looks absolutely gorgeous, it's faultlessly made, the woods and construction are as good as anything I've come across, but I'm not going to be able to live with it. I'm absolutely gutted.
When he went in he met a very nice man called Chris. Chris said he would love to make a new toy for the little boy. So Chris took the little boy to his special cupboard and showed the little boy his wood.
Blimey, I'm glad I didn't go to a luthier for my new bass now....

First off sorry to hear it's not taken off the way it really should Nige - despite every experience I've had, hope springs eternal, so fingers crossed something else at least as good turns up for you. It'll be a hard act to follow, though.
I think I've mentioned before that our singer's lad got signed to Columbia during his first year of a music performance course at Bristol Uni and they've been pushing him everywhere. Now, he's a really nice guy and can write a catchy tune but enough 'star quality' to attract a major label? I wouldn't have said so - just goes to show what I know. http://www.thenation...ra_Cassy_O.html The music business works in mysterious ways.
Went to see George Ezra in Hebden Bridge the other week, I'd have said he definitely had what it takes: he has the looks, presence and charisma, his voice stands him out from his direct competition, and he's got some good tunes. I had a great evening.

Always play with my own rig. It's physically small enough that it's never an issue. VFM!

I used to have strong principles where neck profiles were concerned (The slimmer/thinner the better - my first forays into modding were to put Jazz necks on my Precisions), then I started using basses where the overall experience made the neck profile a secondary issue (like my Dingwall), and now I rarely notice - my Wishbass is an extreme example: it's got a neck like a tree trunk, but I love playing it. As far as QC on this bass is concerned, I'll be all over it as soon as it hits, and if it isn't 100% right it'll be going back like a boomerang. I have high hopes, however, I shall keep everyone updated.

The neck IS maple?

Mine's in at GAK, it'll be coming out to me in the next day or so. But they have only got the one...or so I'm told. The competitive price is £1639...everywhere...the traditional Rickenbacker supply and demand...

Stranglers. Any of it, but especially the first 15 seconds of Hanging Around.

It can blow a man's b*lls off at the count of three ....

I've just scaled down to this one : replaced the Super Twelve with a Compact to go with my Streamliner 900, for an even easier lift. At 26lbs or so, it's just daft how much noise comes out of that box... I was of the opinion that I was never going to use the S12 to its full potential, so I thought I might as well make life even easier on my back. I may still keep my Schroeder, though - that's 2x15s in a similar sized box...however, my tinnitus is always gonna be the eventual winner... -
I'm having one.

Sooo, I'm casting about all over for a 50th birthday present to myself, lots of options, nothing making me put my hand straight into my pocket...and then I saw a picture of the new 4003W...good grief... My first decent bass was a Jetglo 4001 (all your fault, Geddy...) back in the Late Jurassic, and since I sold it in the mid-eighties I've never had the slightest GAS for another...until today... Anyone else seen/like the look of them?
-
That's fantastic - I've a long-term, low-level GAS for a Variax which I can transplant into a better/different bass, but this is such a good job, I'm rethinking...
-
I don't think there's been much change overall - it ebbs and flows: in the past I've bought (and sold) Stingrays, Laklands and US Precisions for less than £700, and two immaculate Dingwalls which were both under a grand. The cheaper stuff sometimes moves quicker because there's a bigger market and more impulse buying, but that's about it, although I had much more joy on EBay with mine.

After 8 years of searching....... (Yamaha 2024MX content)

Oh Blimey, Part Deux...PM'd... -
As above, you can find plenty of sales threads for lots of amps on here - I'd say the winner would be the LMII or III, but that doesn't mean there's anything in common with the reasons for sale, other than, as Lozz says, easy GAS. As an example, I have a diametrically opposite experience of the Streamliner with WoT's Walkabout - I thought the Streamliner was everything the Walkabout was, but smaller, so I sold the Walkabout back to WoT. How we laughed. The only thing I can think of is maybe people don't get the Streamliner EQ: as we've discussed before, it's a bit different.

Visited them last year while the rest of the family was frolicking at a water park - lovely guys, and tons of stuff you'd struggle to find anywhere else. I only bought strings, but I still saved a fortune...I wouldn't hesitate to buy a bass from them, but then I have a friend in the States I can ship to, and get it home from there...

If I had a backup head, I'd lend you mine, but unfortunately I'm gigging too often for the thing to even cool down properly these days...which is a good thing, obviously...despite what Her Indoors thinks... On the direct comparision with an SVT thing, I haven't used a 'proper' SVT in fifteen years, so I can't give you a A-B on that, unfortunately, but if anyone wants to lend me an SVT, I'll more than happy to A-B it for you...

No, the Gain's interesting - it does drive the valves more and more progressively as you'd expect (as does the Gain switch), but it also changes the response of the following tone stack, which is, I believe, similar to the traditional Fender tone stack. It's different to a lot of smaller heads in that sense, and I think it catches a lot of people out. It's an EQ you've got to play with a bit to get the best out of. There's a pretty good Youtube vid from Ed Friedland (The Bass Whisperer) on the Streamliner, which goes into some detail. Yeah, some great amps on the list; some were before the Streamliner (the MB and TC), but the rest all came and went after being A-B'd in rehearsals and at gigs with the Streamliner. The M-Pulse was my next favourite, but that's a full size 2U amp...

Just put a set of DR Lo Riders on my Dingwall - not too sparkly, just dark enough...

I use a Streamliner 900 with my Schroeder, and it's a great match: the low-mid hump of the cab focuses the kinda bloomy bottom end of the amp. Well, to my ears it does... I also love the warmth of the Streamliner, and it drives those valves really nicely when you crank the gain a bit. It's my favourite practical amp*, and it killed a run of GAS that included Mark Bass (LM III and Tube), Ashdown (Spyder and ABM) Ampeg (SVT-7), Mesa Boogie (x2 - Walkabout and M-Pulse) and TC (RH450). Not sure I need the 900, tho, I'd like to try a 600, because I suspect that'd do me in these post-tinnitus days... * Yeah, in an ideal world including my own road crew I'd have an SVT again, but that's never gonna happen...

During a recent bout of string GAS I bought a 4-string set of DR Black Beauties in 45-105 gauge to give them a try. They've been on my Dingwall about a fortnight, and while they're a very nice coated string, coated strings aren't for me. They have no wear to the coating at all, and are as fresh as when they went on. As they were on my Dingwall, they haven't been drastically cut, but if you give me a shout I can measure them for you. String busters have them in for £35, so I think £20 posted in the UK is pretty fair, and a cheap way to try them out yourself. Cheers, M

How does one go about trying out a bass...
Muzz replied to Cameronj279's topic in General Discussion
The other thing is, they don't all sound the same, either - it's like saying "I tried a Fender once, I don't like the sound." If you're thinking of spending Dingwall money, Bass Direct really is worth a visit. -
Yep, that's the stuff - it was a quid from a B&M Bargains sort of place...
-
Yep, it's a pocket battleship of a cab. And yep, I put my Streamliner on top - in the past I've used that nonslip rubber matting, but I put it down somewhere and lost it, so now I hook the front feet of the amp over the front edge of the cab, and it's all good.
