Markbass - all made in Indonesia now and heavy?
Muzz replied to phatbass787's topic in Amps and Cabs
I wouldn't be very fussed if they'd switched production to Indonesia per se (especially if they no longer tout the kit as Made In Italy), but I'd be mightily naffed off if the cab I'd ordered turned out to be (significantly) heavier than it was supposed to be. That's a big deal. -
Gigbag / case to fit a Genz Benz streamliner 900
Muzz replied to Me And My Bass's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've got one of those laptop rucksacks, which it fits in nicely, along with cables, pedals, etc. -

A stunning talent, and, as lojo says, a very sad story. Written, incidentally, by that well-known shyster Sting (see other thread for details)

Have you ever seen Sherlock?

It's all a bit more complicated than just the speaker diameters (I've got a 2x12" cab which kicks out MUCH more bottom end than my 2x15"), but if you're happier with a 15" speaker, Mark at Bass Direct's got the Genz Contour 115 combo for the same price as the 210. You could always get the combo and add the extension speaker (as long as you don't leave it months, because these Genz prices won't last forever - the NX 212 cabs went in days) if you think you need it later.

Strap length: been able to play vs looking cool
Muzz replied to col.decker's topic in General Discussion
Why does it have to an opposition between the silly affectation of wearing a guitar slung low for rock and roll "cool" ( Cool? Who says so, and why?) and sitting down like a string quartet? Wearing a bass slung very low makes playing it effectively and efficiently a lot harder for most people. That is an undeniable fact. Plenty of dynamic live performers wear their guitar at a sensible and functional height and it does absolutely nothing to detract from their charisma. Miles Davis once said that he could tell a good trumpet player just from the way he stands,, and the same is true for the bass guitar. There are some decent players who wear their bass lower , but they are few and far between. I'm not at all precious about it..Different people have different motivations for taking up and instrument in the first place, and to some people they are more bothered about appearances than actualities. That is a perfectly valid choice, but such people can only be judged according to those choices they have made . It is a false dichotomy to suggest that music divides between cool people who wear their basses low and nerdy geeks who wear it high . What could be more uncool than being so lacking in individuality or imagination that you unquestioningly buy into all the same old banalities? It's one thing to have an image, but it's another thing entirely to be a stereotype.
Did you miss the last three words of my post? Spike Milligan writes about being instructed by Major Jumbo Jenkins on the correct etiquette for the Battery dance band: "Stand up straight, step forward smartly and play as if you were playing for King and Country." Spike replies "Yes Sir, and if I ever play a wrong note, I shall immediately think of Hitler..." -
Isn't it technically a Micro Ampeg CL half-stack? Nice looking rig, though - how long do you think it'll be before you succumb to the obvious GAS of the other 2x10?...
Might I suggest to you ( in a friendly manner) that the point of playing the bass, or indeed any musical instrument, is to make music. The coolest thing you can do with a bass is actually learn how to play it in a musical fashion , not sling it round you ankles and look like you are trying to saw it in half with a plectrum.
I shall look forward (in another friendly manner) to your next gig when you all sit like a string quartet (to maximise the ergonomics of the musical performance) and entertain the audience that way...that'll be cool. Playing live can (and very often is) be a performance of the music more than a recital, and there are many factors to a performance, one of which is physical presentation and image. Sling it low and thrash the thing, or cradle it and never miss a note, all are valid. -

"Hamfisted shop gonk"..excellent, noted and will be reused... Oh, and that's a terrible job, I'd want him to pay me after doing that to my bass...

Yep, +lots to this - that original 3-point bridge is awful. The Hipshot's biggish, but better in every way.

The Fender Roadworns I've played have been really nice instruments, and I don't mind dings (you can't gig a bass for very long without picking up something here or there), but the whole relicing thing leaves me cold - as said above, it's trying too hard wannabee stuff. It's also pretty obvious 99% of the time.
Fourth time it's been listed. Edit: Also this with Foxton connection, although for well over £2k more than these ever sell for. (OMFG - it worked!!) Fender Custom Shop - worth the tag?
Muzz replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
My Dingwall has, while not completely curing my GAS, raised the bar very very very high indeed. Having said that, I'm 50 in April, so thoughts turn again to binning any party arrangements and costs, and to start looking for a YOB Precision. I'd want a maple board, though, so that raises the search level from Hen's Teeth to Rocking Horse Cr*p...probably just as well... -
" I had a LMIII, then a RH450, then tried an awful lot of the smaller heads (LM Tube 500, GB Shuttles, Walkabout, etc) and ended up with one." Do you really think the LM Tube 500 is that bad..? I have always thought that it would be like LM III but with the small valve improvement...
I didn't think the LM Tube was different enough from the LM to make the permanent change - I thought the drive was fizzy and very off/on. The Streamliner's EQ catches a lot of people out (but again this does depend on the cab used, too - my Schroeder 1515L needs bass adding, but my BF Super 12 is far more accurate, and the bass needs to be attenuated) because as I said it's particularly voiced, which isn't everyone's taste, but it's very warm and tubey, and there's some great tube sounds there. I even preferred it to the Walkabout and the M-Pulse 600, which are great tubey amps.
-
If small and tubey is what you're after, it doesn't get much tubier than the Streamliner - I had a LMIII, then a RH450, then tried an awful lot of the smaller heads (LM Tube 500, GB Shuttles, Walkabout, etc) and ended up with one. They're a particularly voiced amp, but there's some bargains going around in GB stuff at the moment, so it may be worth taking a chance...

I was that soldier circa 85. It was never as much fun as the Motley Crüe videos made it look...

Thrice-Weekly-Covers Band -Flatwound-PBass-SansAmp type introduction(!)
Muzz replied to stumpypepys's topic in Introductions
Welcome indeed, and perhaps have a look at a Radial Bassbone - a bit less coloured sound than the Sansamp pedal (but I've just noticed even more expensive!)...and I've just spotted it doesn't have phantom power...oh well... -
I had a LMIII I moved on for the RH450 - I had a Sansamp I used with the LM, and found I never switched it off: the RH450 gave me that sound without the Sansamp. I eventually ended up with a Streamliner, and that's staying. The feature set on the RH is still the most comprehensive out there, and I miss the presets, the tuner and the footswitch.
IME no set list works only if ONE person calls the next song and their word is THE LAW. Anything else reduces your band to strictly amateur hour.
This. We have setlists for the wedding/function band at least a week in advance, but that's just curtesy and to make sure any deps are 100% up to speed (and we do have a 100+ song list to go at), but on the night the bandleader will call the order as he judges the room, and so the order might change. We don't have more than 5 seconds between songs, again unless the singer/bandleader is talking to the audience. When we gig the originals stuff, we have a set list which stays that way.
