Music Management - what's it all about eh?
Sibob replied to BigBeefChief's topic in General Discussion
Mine is a success story so far as well! In my opinion, a manager doesn't organise the day to day running of a band, they are your connection to the industry! You employ them for their contacts and their savvy! Touting you about to the people who matter, getting people talking about you etc! Their job is not to get gigs or tours (although this does happen sometimes as a bi-product), their job is not to get you rehearsing, it is not to run your myspace!. Further down the line they will organise and run your diary, but that's about it, they will then start to organise an infrastructure of people around you. Agents for gigs, Tour Managers for tours, Press & PR people, Endorsements etc etc They will of course make sure you are meeting the deadlines you are supposed to meet, and kick you up the arse once in a while, but it is down to the band to sort their daily routines IMO! (I'm talking at toilet-circuit level). It seems to me that any people that have had negative experiences have usually done so because: A ) it was their brothers cousins dog who was doing it, not someone with decent industry contacts B ) they believed that EVERYTHING was to be done by the manager C ) didn't have the contract checked out well enough and were stitched up D ) they simply didn't 'make it' and are bitter All of these things are very easy to overcome of you stay on top of the day-to-day running of your own band! But realise that not many people within the industry will take notice of a 'self-managed' band contacting them, unless they have a massive following and simply can't ignore them. Each 'scene' within the music industry is very tight knit, everyone knows each other, and so having a decent manager within those circles is priceless! Si -
I gather from your post that you want a bass that's comfy for someone with small hands and makes a pleasant sound when popping and slapping. From that description, I'd say you can't go far wrong with an OLP, the licenced MusicMan copy. It's passive so hasn't got that edge to the tone that a Stingray has but is far cheaper and does produce a useful sound for popping and slapping. I upgraded mine with Seymour Duncan pick-up and 3-band active EQ which brought it up there with the big boys. It had one of the most playable necks of any bass I've owned. I still think about getting another
My OLP stingray has a very wide neck, wider than a precision! I'd go for a Jazz width neck! The new Squier Classic Vibes are great so I hear! Si

If so this is what I'm after, preferably from a 2002-2008 era USA 4 string jazz bass: Nut width - 38mm (from Fender website) width at 12th fret width at last fret (fret 20) Neck depth at first fret depth at 5th fret depth at 12th fret Many thanks Si
-
Cheers CK, I think it might be worth going down this route, certainly if it's an feature that takes little effort to include in a build. Si
-
Are they literally just for giving open strings a more even sound compared to fretted notes? Or are there other areas that can benefit from them? This may or may-not* be related to the next neck build for my jazz project! Cheers Si * it is related
The pickguard I got from eBay seller fxguitarman1. They've got BWB, black pearl and white pearl listed but will do others on request. It's made by Jeannie Pickguards. Try http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trk...+bass+pickguard It wasn't perfect - I found that the screw holes weren't countersunk enough for my liking so I sorted that out, and of course the holes didn't line up worth a damn (as is the case with any Squier body I've changed the pickguard on) so there will be some filling and redrilling in your future. The bridge was also an eBay US job, there are a few dotted about: 140275775969, 400003273589, 350114574112 (I got the last one mentioned there, but I'm sure they're identical) The pickup was also an eBay US job (there is a distinct lack of cool bass stuff here in the UK, no?) - a GFS Pro Tube lipstick pup. Decided to go with the 8k bridge pickup. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120322134772 They also do a 6k and a 4.9k depending on what you want to do. There's a lot of space in the pickup rout if you want to get creative and you don't mind modding your pickguard.
Lovely job Cheers mate! Si

As someone who has owned both, I can say that for me, the Standard blew the Deluxe out the water! I haven't got the Deluxe anymore as a result! The Fender preamp is tosh, nice enough bass I guess, but tone wise the Standard owned it! Having said that, I know at least three guys personally who love their Deluxes, you won't know until you try them both! What I will say is that my old Deluxe sounded great in the bedroom, it was gig situations that it really performed poorly! So try and gig everything! Good luck Si

Mate that looks so cool! Could you tell me the various parts you used for this? is the scratchplate a custom? I've got a Bronco that is kinda sitting not doing much, I've got it strung Piccolo, but am definitly now thinking about pimping it and returning it to an octave lower! Mines Red though, not as cool as black, but might look nice with a red-tort scratchplate Cheers Si

is that a strap I see??? they call me 'Eagle eyed' Poulton! Lovely setup mate! I want a Schroeder Si

Yeah my Shuker is a transducer pickup under the bridge, much like an acoustic DB. Here's a video of me bowing it (about halfway through the song)....decent speakers will help you hear it the bass! EUB Got one for sale innit! Si
-
It depends really! All I can say about when I purchased the bow for my EUB, is that I spent around £120. Brazilwood with an Ebony frog. Size will make a difference to the price as well, full size, 3/4 etc...mine is a 3/4. Any smaller isn't really worth it, you can't get the length of notes needed! What I will say though, is that the chances are that budget EUB's aren't going to allow you to bow as well as a better quality one due to the shape of the fingerboard! The stagg ones for example look impossible to bow on, much flatter fingerboard, there are plenty of users of that EUB on here though, so maybe they can comment! My Shuker EUB is for sale in the FS section (page 3 i think lol), it's in a higher price bracket, but due to it's true upright fingerboard and bridge, you can bow on it as well as any acoustic double bass. Hope this helps Si

Sibob replied to Noisyjon's topic in Build Diaries
Tis beautiful! Looks like the lighter cousin to my currently in half black jazz build! (thread just down the page).! Nice one Jon, get some shots of it in action! Si -
Oh, One thing I forgot to do was mention everyone who's helped out with this (ongoing) build, certainly up to 'Version 1'. It's been a real Forum effort lol They include: Jon Shuker (for the sexy and solid 'version 2' neck) Chopthebass (Ian - for the beautiful 'version 1' neck, good luck in Canada) My Uncle Steve (for the ace refinish) Kevbass (Kev - for the body and neck plate) Mr Pablo (Rob - for some electronics and string tree) Bassistjonathan (Jon - for the Badass II) DylanB (Dylan - for the Hipshot tuners) Bassic Bits (for a superb price on some new DiMarzios) Neepheid (Matt - for the strap buttons) NJW (Nico - for the control plate) Cheers Si
