Hey guys! I'm potentially going to pull the trigger on something! If you saw my post in this forum about a particular Jazz bass, you have a good idea! Anyway, I've never played one.....a custom shop that is. I'm more than happy with my 2003 US standard jazz and my 1973 jazz. So, I want your opinions on Custom Shop basses. Anyone who is just going to say "go Lakland" or "go Sadowsky", please only do so if you've either owned a Custom Shop or have played one extensively Funx Si

Just learn the sections to the songs, have the structures in the back of your mind but be ready for their own arrangement of the songs. It's kinda the same as asking "for any changed keys, intros, missed/extra verses/choruses etc", but to be honest, key changes are what 5 strings were built for, and anything else can be spotted by listening and watching Good luck Si p.s. WoT's process is a good one, although for me, the key is irrelavent, it only matters for practising the song to the original perhaps, work out the shapes within the key.....because you'll need to move it about if you are playing in dfferent keys! BUT Key changes within the song are still very important......just be aware of the Interval

I'm gonna echo what everyone else has said. Just organise your time, start and finish essays ASAP so they don't clash with gigs. It does confuses me though when people want to rehearse 3 times a week or 9 hours and stuff......it just makes me think that they're no good lol, but that could be years of having to sound the best I/We can with minimal rehearsals! At the moment I'd love to play in Biffy Clyro! I'd also love a stint in Barenaked Ladies I think Si

It is very unorthodox for the bands themselves to be handling PRS duties. The reason why the venue you're playing at has a live music license in the first place is to cover royalty payments to PRS. So you have to ask yourself, why are you paying the PRS......when they are at the same time?!.....assuming the venue has a licence that is! And regardless, you pay the 2% even if the other bands aren't registered, technically speaking everyone should be submitting setlists to the PRS for the said gig, and so if these original bands join up say 1 month down the line, they can back date their royalties to include this gig! Cool Si

[I'm gonna have to start putting this answer in my signature lol] I currently tune Drop C Standard for my band FSOF and use string gauges 45-105, with similar tension and action to standard tuning. It's as much (if not more) to do with the core thickness, thicker core, more tension! Try giving Malcolm at Newtone Strings a call, tell him your preferred gauge (what you find comfortable), the tuning you wish to use, and he'll sort you out a tension that works best! Oh and they cost no more than a set of Elite/Rotos Si

Not so much me, but my mother! Was having a quick chat about music with Richard Bona (as you do) at one of his shows at Pizza Express Jazz club in soho, pretty nervous you know, and my mum comes up and says to me mid-conversation.... "Tell Richard how many basses you have Simon" She obviously had the best intentions, and was just trying to try and make me look like a 'serious bassist in the eyes of Mr Bona'......but I probably went a little red lol Si

An Alleva in Henley?? Just down the road from me?? Well OK then! Si

There is no distinct note between any note on the fretboard, certainly not in traditional western tunings at least. I'm not sure I see the point in 'walking' between a semi-tone, but whatever works for you Si

Hi guys! I have what is basically a P/J creme set of pickup covers that I'll send out free with, lets say, a £2 donation to Basschat. I'll split of course, with each cover only requiring a £1 donation Cheers Si GONE pending

You may remember this 'build': http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5336&hl=Encore Well I got a little bored of only using the bass as a 'home' bass, so to make it more giggable (for me), I went and added a Dimazio Model J to match the Model P already installed. BEFORE: AFTER: Not great pics, but you get the idea Can't wait to gig it on the weekend! Cheers to Howard (Bass Doc) for the pickup and Mike Walsh for the work Si Edit: Oh and the placement of the J p'up is loosely based on photos I sourced of Sadowsky P/J's, with a little left to Mike's discretion
Si, I take it that the DiMarzios have a good powerful output? Pete
Yes mate, I find them very powerful! That was actually the main part of the spec I was interested in. I was using an 18v Active bass for my band, but wanted a Passive solution instead, so put a Jazz bass together and dropped the UltraJazzes in. Have absolutely no want to go back to active now for that particular project, the UJ's sound fantastic. Si

I know a guy in Nottingham......or just outside I think, gimme a PM and I'll give you his number. He's already doing a covers band, but I don't know how busy they are! Si
-
Ah ok, well then yes, they may be poor when used passively perhaps. That is certainly the problem with pickups like Bartolinis that really need a preamp to shine. Si
-
I've had some very nice results from my Dimarzio Ultrajazzes! Check them out Never used SCN's in anger I have to say, but I wouldn't have thought they'd be too shabby, I assume the jazz you have is an 'active deluxe' of some sort!? Si
