1. The American Sadowsky I gigged was very average, the Sei 6 and Zon 5's I played were very poor sounding IMO. My Ashdown rig and 3 Fender Jazzes are the best I've ever tried/gigged! Controversial Si
2. Hmmmm, for some reason, I had in my had that Beedster spent about 9-10k for his '64 Precision? But now I think about it......I'm not sure where or If I heard that lol I guess it also depends on if you're buying privately or from a shop. I would expect to pay about £2600-3200 for a late 60's, so I suppose an early 60's...depending on condition would be 4-6k!? Si
3. Yup, but 4 grand cheaper than a clean one Plus I know that you can haggle that shop down a little bit. Me' Mate Dave bought the '63 refin on there Si
4. There you go dude! : http://www.newkingsroadguitars.co.uk/guita...BPrecision.html hehe Si
5. Just a little bump for this tonight Cheers Si
6. Looking awesome mate, and quick too lol! Is this going to be the natural Jazz, or colour finish? Si
7.
I'm afraid sussed this one out in an instant.
I didn't .....and I'm on the bloody staff! lol Shows how aware of the date I am Si
8. My 2003 S1 MIA Jazz is stunning, never played anything better. With more modern MIJ's (90's onwards), also bear in mind that they do the lower-end basswood bodied, japanese electronics ones, as well as the alder/ash bodied, US electronics ones......two different basic price points innit. Si
9.
Maybe firm up the rules a bit.
Which would no doubt be met with even more derision!? You see the catch-22 involved Si
10. Hi all, still on my 'backup lightweight amp' mission, and these have only just come onto my radar. What are people's opinion on these, I have a mate who said that they're good for volume, but have poor tone shaping. I assume they're a bit more 'wild' with their tubeness than Shuttles and Little Mark III's. But yeah, anyone have gig experience with them? Si
11. Very nice! Do you you know if it's been stripped to a natural finish!? Si
12. 6 this month and 13 in April April is good but roll on the summer Si
13. Hi all, If you're in the vicinity of Hoxton this Saturday, pop in and see my second gig with this wicked live HipHop band www.myspace.com/shallowandthedeep http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?e...7297&ref=ts £6 entry if you reply to me with your full name, £8 otherwise Cheers Si
14. But then you do own an Ibanez.......pot calling the kettle black?! lol I like the Thumb SC actually, and I'm a bit of a traditionalist with body shapes Si
15. Hope for us all.....even Pino does wedding gigs! Si
16. Whats the point of trying a bass out and then buying it online?? There's a great probability that the one you buy online will be different enough for you not to be happy than the one you loved in the shop! Support your bricks and morter music shops and do yourself a favour by doing so Si
17.
With all the massive love for The Gallery which routinely surfaces on Basschat (vaguely reminiscent of another ... no, let's not go there) it's worth bearing in mind that most people recognise that you pay for service. The Bass Gallery offers a lot of service.
Love that Jack!!! You know what though, Wunjo have always been nice and helpful with me, and willing to work with prices! BUT They don't very much (sometimes ANY) new bass stuff, most of it tends to be second hand and/or vintage But in the context of London, another +1 for the Gallery Si
18. The other way around it is to have the bass player or drummer start a song. Obviously only really works on some songs (Valerie, Bille Jean, Supersitition etc), but its one thing to remember!, then the guitarist can join in his part when ready. Still needs to sort out the time it takes to tune. I've heard from many people that Gibson tuners are rubbish, although I have no direct experience obviously Si
19. Depends what strings he's using and how hard he hits them I guess!? What would you prefer?, playing a song with an out of tune guitarist?.....To be honest, the singer should be able to fill in with banter IMO! Si
20. This is the thing, I don't consider my '73 Jazz to be an investment....I'm clearly never going to retire on it lol. BUT I have a bass which will never lose money (unless there is a MASSIVE shift in how people perceive vintage Fenders), unlike all of my other basses. Now, couple that with the fact that it gets taken out and used, plays fantastic, and sounds good (although not as great as I'm planning, but thats down to the Wizard pickups). I like the fact that a bass that I'm playing has been out at gigs and clubs for the past 37 years!!. I do agree that these things should be out being played. Unless a piece is MINT/Museum Grade (in which case it's probably a dog anyway ), the person clearly bought the bass for 'Mojo'.....so get out and use it!. Would I buy a £10,000 1964 Jazz simply because it was a 1964 Jazz?? No, not a chance. Would I buy a £10,000 1964 Jazz because it sounded and played awesome at gigs, looked the part....whilst at the same time appreciating in value?.......(with a big-ass bank loan)....YES. Remember that it turns into a Hobby too, it kinda comes back to the playing/verses gear discussion. I love playing, I love gigging with other musicians etc etc. At the same time, it's fun learning about the history of these Fender basses, the various time lines, transition periods and what-not. I don't go out drinking, doing drugs, snowboarding......I read about vintage Fenders lol.....sad? perhaps, but fun! Si
21.
It's humbucking. Has been since '57...
Just Wiki'd it, I concede! . You learn something everyday! Si
22. Couldn't see that this had been cleared up, but split-coil doesn't mean hum cancelling. You can get humbucker Precision pickups (Dimarzio DP122 for example), but it's the arrangement of the magnets in each coil that makes it 'bucking! Cool Si
23. If you're looking to tune down long-term, and want to set your bass up accordingly, I can't recommend Newtone Strings enough. When my band FSOF was playing in Drop C exclusively, I had two basses set up in Drop C standard (C, F, Bb, Eb) with their High Tension strings. The extra tension meant that I could have my strings in normal guages 45-105, and a low action too, nothing flapping or buzzy! Just to re-iterate, I used 45-105 guages in Drop C Standard with pretty normal action. The only negative with high tension strings is that Newtone taylor them to the tuning you want, so although you'd probably be able to take them up to Drop D standard, getting them to E standard would probably make them too tight to play comfortablely. This obvisuly isn't an issue if you're in Drop C all the time. Si
