My DB750 is a far better sound, IMO ( with valves in the pre ) than the TH500 and more pure but I really wouldn't say the TH is distorted or has to be. It is a typical small amp sound and can be pretty boxy or synthetic but I'd say that characteristic is typical of that ilk. I'n not getting this distortion thing..??
Yes I understand this.... but on the rear panel of these cabs you only have one input.... therefore you cannot run a stereo/leftright into them, therefore you would need a mono sum mix from the desk
Ok... not good then. I was talking about normal subs and tops.

Dull.... ?? making a cab less dull by pointing it at your ears on tilt isn't going to remedy a dull sound going out to the audience unless you run FOH and engr it, so all you've done is improve your 'dull' sound for your purposes. It will still likely be dull outfront, I'd sort out the dull sound.
What an extraordinary situation. I can't imagine being in a band where this happened.
Not likely to join one if the guy with the car left..
Dep will get an equal split or a minimum of 50 quid, If rehearsal costs (we don't always rehearse with the dep before hand) have to come out of that gig money we take that on the chin between the 3 of us. So yes. now and then the dep will get more than the core members (not much to be honest) but we accept that as we have a very good reputation and virtually never have to pull a gig.
It gets a bit difficult when the dep tells you how much he'll play for... but in principle I don't like the idea of a dep getting more than core members so if the gig is a good payer, then they get 'wages' not a split... It tends to work both ways, sometimes in our favour, sometimes not, but hopefully you come out just ahead..
Ive been in a band for the last 6 months called Michigan Avenue. we play rock blues type stuff. thing is its just not inspiring me.. I'm not sure if I'm just indoctrinated to soul and funk or the music just isn't that good. the real feeling i get is that the music just doesn't inspire me to play. sometimes it does with certain songs, but only in parts. maybe I'm answering my own question. the band is drums, guitar x 2 and bass. i tried to introduce this guy who is a keys master, and i got a 'no, not now maybe later". i just want some chords behind the music. I'm talking Billy Preston type stuff. can you girls/guys play music that your not really into..? put it this way i would rather play covers all night of chic than play the original music that this band has.
First off, always make it a good band... and that can take you a long way into less interesting music but I also want keys and gtrs who have empathy with keys... The best way to do this is pick the players YOU want in the band... it doesn't mean it is your band but it does tend to mean you are the direction driver.. Form another band with the keys..and build from there. If two bands are too much then the least inspiring will be the one to ditch at some point..??

Do you/your band rehearse with full gigging set-up?
JTUK replied to Lozz196's topic in General Discussion
Busking gigs with top hat and tails hardly need to rehearse but you still want to know what sounds are going to be used. There are keys and Keys and piano sounds can be hugely variable so you'll want to pick the right one..same for gtr patches so you could do this at house run thrus but that is just another date to set up. Just as parts and approaches would be agreed on, so will certain sounds. We've had deps on gigs with poor choices of sounds...and to turn up for a gig with a 61 keyboard and expecting a really good acoustic piano out of it is an insult. So unless we know the dep well, you have to tell them what is acceptable or not.. Of course, beggars can't be choosers is also a factor but good playing and very good sounds determines whether you get called again or not, IMO. -
Band pays the rehearsal fees, comes out of the gig money. Deps however, and we use a few, are not expected to contribute to rehearsal costs.
Do you pay the dep more on the gig as well or less..?? as that could mean a dep earns more than a core member pro rata..??

Do you/your band rehearse with full gigging set-up?
JTUK replied to Lozz196's topic in General Discussion
Drums variable, Keys use full sounds and two boards, gtr will bring his FX set-up and wont use studio amps. I wont use the bass rig either so will bring my lightweight rig. The idea is to get sounds, parts, vox and changes sorted and we'll put it all together in a pub gig. We aren't going to be far off soundwise, but we will want the sound up well enough to know whether the song will work the way we want it to. Production is important so sometimes chords/notes in the right place is not enough. If you are a new band or have some major new kit, you'll want to have gotten to grips with it prior to a gig so you might want to iron out a few bugs in your room. Most rehearsal P.A's are poor and even the better ones wont have a better P.A than what a decent sounding bands runs.. unless you are paying big £'s or have a pro muso's home set-up but the studio is most likely for recording which is a whole new set of gear you wouldn't bother with for a rehearsal, mostly. -
Just because someone can tune the cab to have this or that bias, it doesn't always mean you should. 10's as subs aren't unheard of, by any stretch, but like all things, that is never the whole story. A 'smart' guess would have been to understand this was a trick test and answer accordingly but then it doesn't matter either. People want and like stereotypes as it makes things easier. It is not how low the chassis can go, it is how high which is more useful to me and if a chassis has a 3khz limit, there is no way round getting anything more out it, The defines it more than anything, IMO.
I say the drummer should pay for kit hire. I wouldn't expect the band to pay for a bass amp if I needed to hire one. However, our drummer is a skinflint and in practice we split the cost four ways. Reluctantly. If he wasn't such a good drummer I'd make a lot more fuss about it.
Generally what it costs for the room is an equal split but if the drummer can't or wont bring his own kit, then the cost of that decision is down to him. Having said that, deps don't pay and if the guy who joins you is on 'wages', then he probably wont pay either. If someone is very hard up the band might discuss it and 'carry' him for a short while..

I mentioned one sub as adequate and a bit of depth to the sound only in a smaller pub. It is a bit of depth only not sound re-enforcement as such, It is just to help the tops in a generally tops only gig for keys and kick.. So, to repeat myself.. :lol;
How do you mean.... unless you pass through from one of the mid/high but then you are only getting that from one channel of a stereo mix.... may be missing some info in the signal in that case
Assuming L and R main signal out of the Desk... into Sub 1 via passthru to Top 1... so that side gets the depth of the sub. Personally, I wouldn't even be pan the signals ... and then on the other signal I'd have a pass filter to the top... OR pan the signals to bais the side.. Anyway, what I meant was the tops or subs need a pass thru option of the cab inputs..??
Exactly. There are no winners and losers in a poll/thread such as this - we are all winners really as our collective (and individual) knowledge will have been added to
Well, I'm pretty sure the purpose of a thread like this is to trip a few minds/stereoypes but then again, they are stereotypes for a reason.
-
For some, yes. Others are interested in the technology from a more 'academic' point of view perhaps... The resulting sound is the bottom line of course, but how that sound is made/shaped is also pretty interesting and worthy of study for its own sake.
Interesting but irrelavent unless you NEED to be convinced by a science because your ears can't make up their mind. Would make sense of a 'buy with your eyes's comment...
So if you are running one sub, you need a separate feed for this.... No option to sum two input sources (from a stereo left/right feed) to then feed the top cabs.
Really...?? Would have assumed a simple pass thru otherwise you need a separate signal..??
Does no one check out the studio and have a walk round before they book? My locals (Hertford/Welwyn area) are: FarmFactory Graphic Nature The Practice Roomz Although I don't think I've been to any in at least 5-6 years now. Probably longer.
I could probably mention 5 locally and only one, IMO, is fit for purpose as it is a studio room which hires out as a rehearsal room in downtime. P.A is not universally loved as it is an old Celestion but it is decent enough. Playback is thru CD or tape so a basic record is possible and all the kit works.. plus the tea room is free. The others are more expensive and have shot P.A's and I can see the point about putting in crap gear as it will get damaged at some point, but that just means you have to vet the idiots out. Since the studio I mentioned above is massively over subscribed, the idiots can be hived off.. We tend to use Studios in their down time if poss...even if it means we lump some of our own gear in. The clientele tends to means the toilets and kitchens work and are at least clean...

Don't bother with pubs like that.... I'm not going to drag people down to places like that, and tbh, they wouldn't want to go anyway so all adds up to a waste of time. Pubs are too much hard work at the best of times so that would be one to avoid.
For tonal control? I don't know, fairly new to using anything other than traditional amps & cabs, bought a sansamp last week and have used it through the PA at a couple of rehearsals with impressive results. I was assuming that the unit would work in the same way as all other powered PA speakers I've come across and require a greater input than a bass alone can provide and also have no means of EQing the sound.
You have to have a pre amp, but would you use a clean or driven sound. If clean, then expert to hear a lot of things you might not want to hear..and you'll need to be a very precise player to get away with that, IMO. If dirty, then I don't understand why you'd want a clean rig to then add dirt..??? I think some people just use them most as gain units which is seriously over loading the input stage in some regards, IME.. The other thing is no one wants sub bass on a stage if you are running FOH.. it is just another signal to clean up thru ambient mics... and over run into smaller P.A's...IMO.
-
Why would you put the Sansamp in front on it..??
Would it work as a bass amp using a sansamp DI? If so, I am starting to look at my Super Twin & Ashdown ABMs in a new and less favourable light.

Lots of people. Two subs cause problems - one sub does the job because low end at sub frequencies is non-directional, i.e. you can't tell where it's coming from, so you don't need two subs - you get your stereo from the tops.
Agree, lots do and I think it is valid if all you want to do is add a bit of depth. Put it anywhere, as bass will go everywhere. Perfect scenario for a average sized pub for when the tops get run a bit too hard with kick and keys..??
-
I run mine at 12, 12 and drive on about 1 and I wouldn't call that a drivey sound and certainly nowhere near the grind I can get out of an SWR SM amp...which I don't really go for, but it is 'honest' break up from the valve stage. For what it is worth, I don't really go for SS distortion anyway..

Had to supply a rig for a gig as they'd specified and 810 Eden or equivalent...?? The guy owned a Genz Benz and B/F cab which he told me would put out 1500watts.. ( who makes this stuff up ) so I wonder why they needed to pay me to supply. It couldn't have been for the carry, surely, and at 1500w it would surely have done the gig...
-
Some rooms are just awful and the money they charge for it is a joke. I wouldn't go back there. Either the guy has idiot bands or he thinks that the kit supplied doesn't have to be good. Either way I'd avoid. One reasonable way to determine what a studio is like...is to check out what refreshments are free.. ...
I'm so damn interested to know which is which! A TKS is what I'm 99% certain to buy within the next few weeks and this has REALLY piqued my interest!
You want to hear the production cabs for real. BassGear isn't that far.
