A 410 is a formidable package. 2x112 are good as well..but you'll have to accept the compromise.of weight over sound. What you add to embellish a 'deficiency'..you take away from elsewhere, so I'd say if you really want that 410 sound, you need to get used to the idea of carrying a 410. I use 2x210 and that works for me ( ceramics) but my experience is lightweight means 'lightweight' in some regard.

Markbass...do I regret selling thee and want to buy another?!
JTUK replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
Not sure..depends how often you have used the replacements. I liked the RH750 right out the box and that is always a good sign as it means you have a sound you can use straight away and not have to search for it. I think you need to give amps a chance to shine in a few different situations but would be hoping that these new micros are a step on from the MB stuff in terms of digital technology. But then watch this space..there might be a new latest thing come by soon. I must say, I am not convinced by it myself, atm. -
Basses and strings don't like fluctuating temps, IMO Strings will go off by themselves over a period of time. I keep the basses out of the sun and out of the cold.

Bang for buck to get the better rig for £400 or so, would be TE. Assuming you need an amp AND cab It is heavy and bombproof and although it is easily outclassed nowadays..as it is 20 plus years old line, it is unlikley to let you down. Nothing sophisticated about it... and the EQ is a basic graphic .. you should get a good pub gigging rig for around that money. Very good starter gear now for the money you can pick it up for

Take the quality gigs and dump the rest... Nothing burns you out more than chasing any dive going..!!

The battery will die with a fizz...and then no output in active mode. Passive will still work fine though.

Get into a network..and if people like what you do, they'll call with dates. You do have to put yourself out there, so a few choice contacts are fine. Once you know 3-4 bookers who know how you play and that you can do the type of work they'll get..you get asked. I'd start at open mics/jams.
To you maybe, but for those that can appreciate the difference then, no! Why do so many players think that because their appreciation stops at a Precision bass, everyone else’s has to as well?
agree.......

Having just seen a multitude of bands at local festivals.. I think more thought could go into what they play. There would have been stuff like Markbass, Ampeg, Ibanez, Cornford, Fender, Gibson, MM and not a lot of great sounds out of all that. The best gtr sounds by a mile, IMO..were an old Fender twin and a 335..and the other guy in that band had a LP and twin. So it doesn't matter so much what you have, unless you can get a good sound out of it... a lot of people must have cloth ears or bought dodgy stuff with a so-called decent name on it. Best bass sound was a Squire and Marbass combo rig... but it couldn't handle the stage, IMO.
-
Interesting..but I have my doubts that you could drive that hard with a 500watt amp. I think I am close to the limits with 2x210's for 550w..??

This is a home practise amp/combo... and I doubt you have much tonal range on it anyway. You could experiment at trying to get other sounds out of yoyur bass...but sooner or later you'll need something more capable. Certain amps can only do one sound anyway...and the last thing you want on them is an EQ stage to complicate things For that budget, I'd be loking at a decent size combo that could do small gigs... but then, you will likely not have the headroom to get more that one sound at its loud volume. In recent times, I've heard/used Ampeg and GK combos, plus MB rigs and all have been small and portable..but they don't do it sound-wise, IMO...when you go to crank them...and the extention speaker just makes the thing louder...but not a better sound. My pet thing, atm...is people doing larger stages with smaller combos...they can't compete with a loud drumer or gtr...so even though the out front sound isn't so bad...the stage sound is awful to have to contend with..IMO.

Just done a series of beer festivals..and last nights was the best by far. Top draw sound from the engr...and a stonking crowd. Best gig of the year by far... and we have had some good gigs, IMO.
So if you turned up for 'your average pub gig' with a Custom shop Pino Palladino or similar, let's say £2.5+ks worth - how many people would notice?
Why would it matter if people noticed or not as to whether you took it out?
-
I just say politely no, not the price you were looking for, but of course, people might think desperation and play accordingly. I'd get upset and turned off the buyer if the offer was insulting..but can't say I've had one, that I can recall.

I get comments on my sound, which I like, of course.. I take an interest in what people use...and how they make it work and it seems to me the biggest problem is with the core sounds of the bass. If you struggle there, nothing will rescue it, IMV..altho,also IME, some set-ups are hard to make sound poor, and others are hard to make sound good. But..what works, works.

ok..fret markers..Top only. I don't ever bother to fire mine up as the battery drain is silly...so on balance I'd say a useless addition....you need a decent lights anyway...not only to see. A slight deviation here,... just watching Meat Loaf on Sky Arts and his band is great for this gig.. They really are able to make the music that is utter drivel, listenable. So in that sense, technique before music.

Well, if you are buying and you play slap..then you'll need to hear how it goes. Otherwise file under band riffs... and if you OD on a bass you aren't going to buy or even pretend to buy....you have to put money in the charity box. Mostly people slap in music shops because their basic playing isn't that good and so they trot out their party trick.

or love it..!! Been in the studio for a couple of vocal dates for an Ad agency demo. 1st girl, older...done stuff and getting back out there. Comes in, knows her stuff, and limitations, and knocks out a couple of tracks from Pink and Rhianna. She can pick 'em, I thought, as these are two tough girls to cover. She does well... nails the double tracks and harmonies and you know she'll get work. She plays back a tape completely unaccompanied of a friends daughter and suggests we put this girl up for the agency work as well. That is nice of her, I thought...helping someone get on ... Today this 2nd girl turns up ...she is 14 and only done school band work before at a school show ... She wants to do Adele and Aretha Franklin... She does 4 takes of each and we keep two... She nails them... she has the phrasing and pitch right down...doesn't drop a note and doesn't forget any words either..which is pretty decent ripping off the Adele track of 5 mins plus.. Needless to say... a good days work..and the band and engr are pretty blown away by her. She wants to come back and re-do the vocals as she has a bad cold and this makes her nasally on the track, she says. We can't wait.... some people have just got IT.

On the basis of hearing a RS210, albeit with its designated amp, the RH750, I'd go for this over a single 10" any day of the week. But I'd also be looking to pr up that cab with another RS210 asap. Then you'd have a rig, I'd be pretty confident could handle anything that amp could throw at it. In generally, I don't think a single 210 has the guts to do most gigs most of the time. Small pubs maybe, and at a decent level, maybe..but I'd want the insurance of another cab on a decent stage.
You seem to be trying to say that Bill and Alex are peddling snake oil, for want of a better analogy. Neither one, to me, seems to be claiming to have reinvented the wheel. Rather that there are basic principles that are manifestly ignored by the bass cab building industry. There are numerous examples in all industries where basic principles or best practice is ignored in favour of profit margin. Only when the consumer has become informed do manufacturers change. Most purchases will be made on the basis of brand with little or no thought as to the actual spec of a product. 'The industry' can ignore these so called protagonists as they have the marketing budgets to shout louder in order to maintain their profit margins. Just because you can't buy a Barefaced Cab in your local music store is pretty much irrelevant. As an aside, but poignant I think, I've noticed that several major bass cab manufacturers have started to boldly place in their spec list that their cabs are made from baltic birch, and that this is a real selling point for them. Considering that most of these cabs are in excess of £500 to £600 I should hope they were made of Baltic Birch given that the wood would account for probably less than 5% of the final retail cost of the cab. I'm more sceptical about the claims made by manufacturers whose product is design within the parameters given to them by bean counters.
I'm saying that for every positive review that may be posted here, there are others who think otherwise. Why they don't post as such, you would have to ask them. Maybe they don't want to cause any agro or whatever, but certain names are championed and may be in good faith but it would be a mistake to think that everyone on here thinks they are that good. If anyone..typically, a new poster, asks for cab advice they get the stock answer. I'd suggest they did some searching and evaluate that for thermselves...but then that is the way I would go about it, maybe others just follow a party line or something.
Thanks for the above guys, looks like I'll be paring my Aguilar DB659 with a Mesa Strategy 400. It's fair to say that I'm experiencing a serious degree of anticipation about this state of affairs C
I like the sound of this.... Personally, if I ended up with a pre like this, which is my alternate to the DB amp route I'd put a decent SS power amp behind it and go for the DB750 type thing on weight alone, but let me know where you are gigging it.

PV=Peavey. I think it will be light and give you a decent thump...for sure. My problem was with the EQ stage which wasn't to my tastes. You should definitely try one to see if it works for you. I certainly wouldn't call them a pile of rubbish
