So, I have an audition for an "original rock" band next week and I was wondering what your opinions are on how I should approach and prepare for it? My two most recent bands have been a rock covers band and a folk-rock band. The covers band was pretty easy, as I recall. Get a list of songs, learn songs via youtube and tabs, play songs, get frustrated at guit, sorry, ham-fisted meatheads inability to do same, but carry on anyway. A year later you have (just about) enough songs to start gigging. Folky band was also easy, I knew most of the stuff anyway, and I ended up calling the shots, so I picked songs I liked and the others went off and learnt them! A year later (and a few line-up changes) you are ready to gig, simple! This band is not so easy though. I had a chat with the drummer the other day and he wasn't very helpful. All I got out of him was that they play "rock music" he wouldn't elaborate. They have no, or are not willing to send me any, mp3's so I can't learn any of their songs. He wouldn't say who their influences are or who they remotely sound like. All I know is, they hate blues, HM and funk (just like me) So, do I practice? Do I just turn up and hope for the best? Which bass do I take? These and a few other questions are going through my mind. What would you do? Thanks in advance, Mark.
No brief is not a lot of good to anyone... If they don't seem to want to put any effort into it, then I don't see what you can do..or why..!! Treat it as light-hearted as they seem to be

FUGLY, though..!!.
-
Look for someone else. Lessons can mean anything and everything...and it is what you come away with that is important. It doesn't seem this is working on any real level so therefore look for someone else...!!

Most of the guys are still active....-ish, so might be able to get some info on the defintive scene/info. Bit before my time but there are plenty of players still about that will know..!!
Unless you have an amp capable of 2 ohm operation you'd only be able to use one. And there's no benefit to running a 4 ohm cab.
This... and I doubt a 12" will go loud LOUD enough so you need the option of two...which then gets you into 2ohm amp territory ..so you are heading down a dead end really. If makers thought there was much call for a 4ohm, they'd make it...IMO.

Drivers - advice wanted? Not sure where else to look
JTUK replied to Freddie75's topic in Amps and Cabs
A great deal of knowledge is required for a successful result. For one thing the power rating of the drivers has no direct relationship with output capability. IMO if you don't like what you have sell them and buy something you do like.
always this..imo. -
hmmm Harleys..?? I was in South Carolina at the time of a Harley Convention...and couldn't work out what all the pickup trucks were doing parked up in the streets...!! The cab driver said all the dudes bussed in the bikes as they were such a pain to ride. There were zillions of them buzzing around town on short rides though...!!! :lol;

£33 to see what is really only a covers band
JTUK replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
I would expect a fair few tribute bands to be a lot better than the originals.. ha ha !! I think Gilmour would take some beating though...but then again, he doesn't seem to want or need to do it again...as it would also be basically the Dave Gilmour band....or more than it used to be. AFAIAC, Dave Gilmour was Pink Floyd.. -
Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?
JTUK replied to Dave Tipping's topic in General Discussion
Deffo..the last thing I want to hear is a band doing the same old numbers ..but it happens..A LOT..around here. Plus, there is no imagination so the format quickly becomes a gtr-led band, endless widdles, limited sound and invaribly a make-do vocalist. I blame do-it-all gtrs..who obviously can't... -

Anyone know where i can get my jazz neck bound and blocked?
JTUK replied to tommorichards's topic in Bass Guitars
If it were me..and I HAD to have it, I'd get a new neck made. Sims would do it..as would a few others, but you need to match up the bass with the new neck and I'd be think £400 ior so for the neck.. If the bass is only worth £500, for example..then it doesn't make sense to me..!! -
If you find one that is worth it to you, then good luck. I haven't found one and they are not my thing anyway, atm.

[sub]yep..was told to listen to the Al Green version by a very good harp player who thought we did it all wrong...!![/sub] [sub]Why would I care...? if there is a track we do that I am not knocked out about, it is that one.[/sub] [sub]It is one of those songs that is too easy to jam..and then you just don't get it.[/sub] [sub]We do it as a dancey type thing in a pub..but I'd rather not bother.[/sub] [sub]The way we do it does nothing for me.... and I don't think it fits the set either..!![/sub] -

It will depend how we play them, more than the song being this or that. If the band can do them and make it work, I'll mostly get on with it... if it doesn't, then I can hate a lot of things. I don't tend to do gigs like that, though..or not for long. -
If you go swr then get an older amp, like a pre fender sm series. No one I know thinks the x series was at the same level as the sm series.
I have one. It is blue and was apparently played by the guy who was in Caravan Richard Coughlan (he of the mighty tash!) It's nice, don't know why people are so down on Fender 5's.
Richard played drums in Caravan.....?????
-
We look pretty closely at this. The bar etc don't work free then neither do we. We ask for exes...and/or we expect to get other work out of it.
Wow thanks a lot guys! The only thing I KIND of dislike about my bass is the Sunburst finish.. Not A HUGE fan, Still nice but It's not really my thing.
yep...tort it up with a decent scratch plate and be ahead of your mates in the 'cool stakes. To many people, sunburst and tort is THE Fender finish. And when the time is right to move it on..it will probably still be the desirable entry level bass to have..so retains its price/standing better. I'd agree your dad did you a favour...nice one, dad. Your mates need educating... just my 2p

I think the RH750 is a very promising match with RS cabs... but I can't say I have much time on them.at all so you can quantify my comments by meaning I would look into them a bit more. I am not entirely convinced about class D myself so offer these alternative Thunderfunk 550B/750A. Aguiliar DB cabs.. I run this with 2x210 and I think it is relatively mobile..you end with a 410 type config, modular and a stonking sound...IMO. Think classic old SWR on steroids. You don't get the valvey grind ..altho it has the switch,...but Eden and SWR are hybrids anyway. I don't miss the valve..... and I really thought I would.
-
Maybe... My feeling with SWR was that they started out as a small but top drawer outfit for pro bass monitors. Once Fender came along and shifted manufactoring costs..and possibly locations, then the pro product element got diluted somewhat. I certainly regard the amps along these lines. The SWR Goliath ll was a stonking cab and can still hold its own today, IMO... but you might not be too keen to lug it around. How they stack up now is a consideration, possibIy, ............ I doubt the design spec has down-graded so much but the component spec may well have. I didn't think my Goliath jnr lll was as good as the Goliath ll, for sure. SWR and Eden both went the same way, IMO...great to start with..and swept all before them..but they don't do that now...IMO.

Rate 'em! 1x12s: Aguilar vs Purple Chili vs Mesa Walkabout
JTUK replied to 1970's topic in Amps and Cabs
Your thinking is fine...BUT... those Fender amps can be very pokey. We will open a book as to when you add another 112 -
My misses spilt a cup of tea over my active bass I pulled the battery and dryed the obvious etc. A day later thought about the scratch plate and lifted it. Yep, still moisture there Finally stripped it and left it apart for a few days before rebuilding and it plays like a dream (when some one else is playing it of course ) Good luck with yours
This..

Stick with the Jazz..... and dream on about the hot chick bass player. Learn about EQ'ing a bass and you'll get more than close to that sound, IMO.
