.... I feel I'm watching someone playing at the very edge of his ability (perhaps he was just rusty), and struggling for ideas.
My sentiments exactly..or being polite about the local situation.I referred to, he is retired or out of practice... but at a recent multi-band gig he wasn't even the best drummer on show..which was really daming considering none of the guys are regarded as anythng special.
2. Haven't opened my amp up so do not really know what is inside, but I THINK it is based heavily on the concept of SWR SM series amps of old..without the stero facility or the valve pre stage. TF amps do have a simulation switch which is quite effective for a bit of grind, but I tend not to use it...only on a Muse track or two and you can hear it working through AE112's.. The SWR SM series pre Fender or SWR sell-out was very well specced...with hi quality components and well wired inside and maybe too much money was spent here, but mine never missed a beat in 20 years until it was knocked over on stage under power. This is why the amp tech I used could tell me how well made it was... as opposed to the usual fare which passes through..no names here..ha ha .. but..?? Anyway, I think Dave Funk uses this design spec and concept in his TF amps so I don't expect any silly problems. That and the fact that they are very usable sound-wise..more so than the SWR 400, which shares the same 4 band parametric EQ idea , plus 'enhance' and 'timbre' control which are sound EQ mappings as far as I am concerned copied by all and sundry now.. Markbass use theirs as VP filters, IMO. The SWR400 had VERY powerful tone shaping capabilities ..and the TF is the same, IMV but it is very hard to screw up a sound on the TF.. as opposed to the SWR, at least I have never managed it..IMO, that is..
This Letterman showcase for drummers had a series of drummers playing solos. Here is Peart: He only really gets to groove at 4:05 and ironically to big band jazz. I watched this over and over and he's just not doing anything for me. Oh well I don't mean to bash the guy. I learnt the OP's groove last night. Took me a while and then it never quite sounded right. With drumming it real does take a long time to get the sound right. I similarly have learn't Steve Gadd's 50 ways to leave your lover groove. Even though every hit is correct and in time. It still doesn't groove anything like Gadd! Trust me, quality drumming takes a L O N G time to master. Davo
I'm sorry, but that link does nothing for me.... Reminds me of a local situation where a very big ex-name does a few gigs and I suggested to our drummer that it lacks an awful LOT..and he said..and he may have a point.. that these solos are designed for stadiums where flash and panache would be lost, but I still expect some basic feel to come out...and it isn't just about laying it down... For example, I am great believer in a drummer hitting correctly... because if you don't you'll never a get much of a sound and you wont get a quick sound-check as there is just too much EQ compensation to go through. That is before you even get onto the feel of the guy... Some guys just have IT and others have to work at it. Not sure what that link does, ...and I don't find it watchable, tbh.
4. all makes sense to me.... Mesa Bergs and Fender, I mean. Not sure what strange language you speak about Dingwalls tho.. .
5. I have KA pickups in a Sei J5 and they sound immense wired up to the East pre. I do prefer Barts straight out of the box though but am glad I have both in my basses. I think Aaron A could make any sound you want from a pickup, so I am less concerned with typical model sounds, personally, so therefore the soapbar case and the fit onto the bass is its only real function, IMO. I would definitely talk to KA/Arron A about what you want.
Malmsteen is arrogant .tick. King of arpeggios.tick. Albums poor.tick. However, have seen him at music fair at wembley a few years back.Arrogant etc.very comical without meaning to be. Saw him headline Hammy Apollo a few years ago, when schenker lost the plot and cancelled, leaving malmsteen to headline. Malmsteen rocked,) absolute ly brilliant. Saw himat Astoria 2(the small one) shortly after not long before it got demolished. What some people don't realise, malmsteen has as many imitators as Eddie van halen. By the way m Bonham is the nuts.)
Freind of mine played drums for him early 90's and considering the dates they were doing was on really sh*te* money. We earnt more per week around that time.
7. It wouldn't be something I'd put up with in a rig myself. The whole point of it is that it fills the stage with a full sound which is why I advocate a full rig as opposed to a rig that can cope. I wouldn't put yours in that category on tha face of it..or rather I am surprised you think it doesn't cut it.but muddy or unclear..which may be relative, makes it sound like it can't W
OK I'll stand on this side of the room, alone!! I would hate to play with a John Bonham type drummer. He does nothing for me.
er..will have to join you, Chris. I can get along with some of his stuff but I wouldn't put him right UP there. Not a fan of super loose sounding unless it is someone like Chambers who is a Monster. If drummers go along with the Bonham thing too literally then it is not a good thing from my point of view. I think he was ahead of the game in a lot of respects and all due credit but give me Ian Piace anyday..
9. One is bad luck and I suppose you would have to wear that...but two is really frustrating and the fact they were from a different supplier doesn't really help. Altho I've gotten decent service from Thomann in the past, I wouldn't have much faith in Gtr/gtr. I've tried to buy things from them...but it hasn't worked out and I am prety glad about that now
10. You can use the send off the amp as a signal to the combo... but you might need gain levels on your sends ... You may also be able to send that to the input of the amp and use just like another signal. If you are playing small places and you have a stack that is very directional...to the point that the sound is not clear either side. I'd say the problems start here as the solution you propose is overkill, IMO.for small places What rig are you running..???
11. Perfectly accepatble rant... I'd not be impressed either...or words to a stronger effect..!!
12. Possibly true... but this recession will drive down wages in real terms as some people will not get cost of living rises...and we will all come out of this poorer or less wealthy, IMO. When I say all.. I don't mean the Super rich... This should also stem price rises and reduce prices in luxury type goods.
13. The T15 seems to be an entry level piece and performs accordingly.. You now have a reference for what is what, so I would be looking at the upgrade if it is that good a deal There seems quite a jump in price the T15 price to the other dual/multiple earpieces and that stands to reason if they use dual or triple driver technology. You wouldn't expect 1 speaker to do it all in a bass cab would you..?? the bias would be high or low but wouldn't cover both that well...so assume the same sort of thinking here. However, if you found the AT ear pieces better then that is a bit galling, but then they aren't moulded either..and am not sure that they could be. Get a demo from the multi driver options would be my thinking...
14.
............. Yeah it'd be worth reinforcing the inside of the cavity alright, that's a bit of a design flaw I reckon.
Was thinking the same..but I'd get a proper wood specialist to fix it so as not to devalue the bass...
15. I used to have a TNT 130 and the only thing that saved it was the BW speaker. The sound wasn't great at the best of times and when you ran it hard you suffered, big time Might be better with a ext cab to get the full power... but then you need to carry two big things then. Might work but needs to be cheap
16. Will be interesting to see how you get on with the HT332 My feeling is that it may be your go-to cab and the AE112's will come second in terms of use and preference Keep me updated, Dave.
17. I love the TF amp with the DB cabs..which John runs as well. The band really like the punch of the AE cabs and I get a really good sound from them..it is just that I think I get a better sound from the 2x210's. there is more weight and thump there.. If I hadn't already got the DB210 as a benchmark, then the AE would be nearly there. I do think I can work with the AE's though and need a bit more time. The sound from the AE is very tight and focused..and I think the sound works better the further away you might be. This is fine for me as I am used to clean cabs and for this reason can do without grindey sounds inherrent in some amps. My conclusion is that I have very good sounding 12's and very good sounding 10's which I prefer but the arbiter for which cabs I use is weight and stage footprint.. I do agree there is something about lightweight stuff ...just can't put a finger on it.. I've heard a pumping RH750 and that sounds pretty impressive but I'd want to know what it could do on a big stage with a powerful band sound blasting away...
18. Hi Dave I currently own 2 AE112's so that is a work in progress. I would say that atm, I am pretty happy with what I've got from them so far.. so as I say, a work in progress I didn't own the GK combo but was supplied it as I was assured it would be quality kit. It wasn't in my mind but I was stuck with it for a while. It was pretty harsh and sterile sounding and it happened to have a NEO115. Try as I might, I couldn't get it to work well enough for my tastes and had formed the opinion that is was a Peavey in different clothing. I guess for the price this is what you end up with. The guy who loaned is a multi-millionaire so why he ended up with this, I don't know. .oh well. I was glad to give it back and have declined all offers to use it again if we stage share. The Markbass 102 combo was borrowed when my SWR stack was knocked over and damaged..both amp and cab. I used this for about 6-8 weeks plus I still use it at rehearsal. I needed to add a cab underneath for live gigs. For rehearsal it would just about be usable on its own but I felt the amp did not go loud too well. It hit the volume but did not retain the very good sound it had at low volume..I went off it as the sound at low and hi vol was too big a differenc to my ears.. I describe this as not amping up very well. I also added a SWR 210 with Deltalites as an extention cab... which I never liked over the old PAs chassis. I could not get replacement PAS speakers and sent them away to be reconed with a cone kit..but they would not give out any specifics on the kit and/or garuantee specs..so I ended up binning the PAS speakers.and going to Deltalites 2510's. I used this NEO cab with a few rigs before selling it on. Many people have said they like this conversion -PAS to Deltalites 2510...but not me, I'm afraid I use the BA600 210 Ampeg at gigs which is supplied by the P.A hire company. We do this for long distance gigs where it makes sense to double up on the car-share and therefore need to cut down gear travelling. This amp has the typical Ampeg EQ stage and with NEO boxes is getting close to the GK bundle. None of these rigs get 'warm' and the sound is all about a hard edge cut..which can be useful but you would need better amps to go with it, IMO. This is why the TF-550-B might be able to work the AE112's as it is in a different league to most amps, IME, let alone the ones I have listed here. Anyway..just a little take on some experience with NEO boxes. Defintive..?? NO.. !! but it does make me think these things through abit..and enough to be very wary of what kit is out there for hire or use.. My number 1 rig is 2xDB210 cabs ...but I am trying to get the AE112's close ..and have to say that I am not that far off...certainly not anywhere near offensive territory,..and it is still early days. I did however, love my DB210's right from the off. so..all in all....er..?????
19. Out of the two I am not sure which I'd dumb down. so I'll go with neither, I'm afraid, as one weak point in the chain cannot be rescued IME. There are some amps to avoid and and as many cabs as well, IMO. Save your money and buy well..not twice..!!
20. Put a bass through it and see the thing fly out of the window ..
21. Looks the part...but you need to be sure it sounds good enough to be worth it. But sure, if you don't mind lugging 77lbs, then what is the problem..? I would expect it to be ALL valve though..!!
22.
I`ve put items up for sale without having the photos ready. It`s usually when I`ve been deliberating over whether to sell something or not, and putting the ad up then commits me to selling. Plus, I usually type these ads up at work, whereas the photos are dealt with at home, so at the very least there will be half a days gap between posting the ad and uploading the pics.
this.... I like to see pics but accept that I can wait for them to appear. If they don't follow within a day or so..then that is when the sale tends to loose interest..but then again..if it were me buying and I was keen..I'd likely have contacted the seller and got phone pics. If the seller can't do stuff to facilitate the sale then go elsewhere, but people can be pretty busy as well.
23. I'll give it a listen to see whether it is worth buying. I have most of her stuff.
24. But then people rip Cowell's type enterprises to shreds as populist pap...which they may well be, but that isn't a million miles away from a pub band doing the same thing. I do recall a local singer being beaten down into 3rd place on the X-factor, IIRC... by a guy who had his whole city vote for him only never to be heard of since. I expect both still to be able to make a living from the association still, but at least this local guy has not changed one little bit..nice guy, decent voice and same gigs for the most part.
25.
Why does it have to be down to "marketing well", or some other kind of seemingly underhand perfidy, which is denying otherwise excellent and self-righteous bands the air time? They could be complete sh*te. As long as their mates enjoy turning up; the rest of the crowd enjoy the spectacle; and the band are having a good time, it shouldn't matter. Anything else smacks of the green-eyed monster.
No, not from my POV, I find it funny and fascinating as well. Quite happy to acknolwledge a band is a good draw....but as I said, also wonder how they get gigs. Obviously, it doesn't matter to the people who go and see them but not sure it is that helpful if they also tell that band they are wonderful as when they step outside that little comfort zone, the realisation may then dawn on them. The problem will be when for one particular band when they headline a festival with an act which will bury them.. which is scheduled to happen this year. I can't for the life of me work out why they took that slot. but hey, there you go.
