1. Good to know they're on form, got plans to see him on Sunday afternoon at the Love Supreme festival, looking forward to it though I suspect it's not going to help with my pedalboard GAS!
  2. Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. I had a flash of inspiration today and remembered a physic lesson about applying force through levers. I put the end pin back in and with it tightened in an extended position was able to apply a suprisingly little amount of force to wiggle the collar free!! Have ordered a new end pin unit which should hopefully arrive on Wednesday so fingers crossed everything should be sorted in time for next weeks gig. As an aside, the bass is currently flat on its back on the spare bed, much to the consternation of the wife. I've explained about the risk of dropping the soundpost in its current state but she wasn't impressed as her mother is due to stay at the weekend. A few choice words were hear when I suggested there would be enough room for the mother in law to share the bed with it :-)
  3.
When you look inside the bass through the f-holes, is the end block that the end pin slots into split? If it is, it's time to start looking for a loaner bass for your gig.
Just checked that, there's no evidence of any splitting
  4. Just dropping a quick link here as I'm not sure how much traffic the Double Bass section gets and I need some urgent advice. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/307819-dropped-my-double-bass-what-to-do-now/ Dropped my bass on the way to a gig on Saturday night and now could do with some advice about fixing it. Many thanks!
  5. Had a bit of a nightmare on my way to a gig on Saturday night. One of the shoulder straps on my gig bag snapped and ended up dropping my bass from a height of about thee feet! It landed directly on the end pin which seems to have taken the brunt of the force. No damage to the front/back/ribs, soundpost is still in place, but the end pin collar has been pushed into its hole causing it to split. This has meant that now the end pin is sticking out of the body at a very slight angle. My first thought was to try taking the end pin out and repositioning it, perhaps replacing it if necessary, but it's now firmly wedged in the hole and I can't get it out (though I haven't tried to use that much force yet). So, 10 days till the next gig, doubtful I'm going to have a chance to get it to a luthier before then, what's my next move? Carry on and play with it as it is? Its playable at the moment but I'm thinking this could possibly make things worse and do more damage? Try using more force to get the collar out? Any tips on how to do this? Any advice greatly welcome! 6. If you're going early Juky then try and stay for the 4th July celebrations - great fireworks shows along the river.
  7.
It's also known as the Most Expensive Show On Radio, in our house, because pretty much every week I end up a with a shopping list of CDs to go out and buy.
Very much this!! I have to stop myself listening to it sometimes as it ends up costing me too much
  8. Wow, that really surprised me! Thought it was just going to be a gimmick but that sounds excellent. Not cheap though and I bet it takes some practice to get the hang of it.
  9. Sums up the absurdity of the situation brilliantly :-)
  10.
I have just got my first DB , an Antoni as it happens ............ From Mal While I haven't spent any money on it , I have put a few hours in lowering the action a fair bit , I have small hands you see . I am now in a position to learn how to play it , and it feels great , I might come to the Derby bash just to feel how other guys have them set up , I have only ever held one , and then took my tools to it . I think in my case it was just bite the bullet and find an opportunity to get one, I had been looking for a while and was suitably confused as to what I wanted or needed, I now have something to learn a bit of the craft on and am really looking forward to it .
Sounds like you've been busy Kev! :-)
  11.
So, Apple spends $100m on an early Christmas present for its iTunes customers and then has to help them throw it away . . . http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29208540 Jobs will be spinning in his grave
And just like that it's gone and all is right with the world again!! Thanks!
  12. Traded my DB with Kev yesterday, very smooth transaction, great comms and a real pleasure doing business with him. Thanks again Kev, good luck on your DB journey!
  13. Happily scrolling through the list of artists on my phone, so i could listen to some music at work this morning and noticed something that hadn't been there previously. Sitting there bold as brass between Tom Waits and Various Artists: U2. Thats a bit strange I thought, a quick google search later and discovered that it had been snook on there by powers outside of my control: http://techcrunch.com/2014/09/10/wtf-is-a-u2/ Never been a big fan of U2, they're harmless enough, I just don't want them on my phone. Doesn't seem there's much that can be done though which I'm not happy about!
  14. I recently upgraded from an Antoni to a second hand Strunal that I found on eBay. After taking the Strunal to a luthier for a new bridge, soundpost, nut and set up, I'd spent a similar amount to your budget. In my case I'd say that the upgrade was most definitely worthwhile. The Antoni is a great starter bass and definitely served its purpose and got me hooked on Double Bass but I'm not convinced that it would have been worth spending money on trying to improve it. I'm sure if you're patient something will come up that meets your needs and fits your budget!
  15.
PM'd
Replied. Bass is still available, make me an offer
  16.
would a normal bassamp be suitable for this bass?
Yep, I play through a normal bass amp with no problems. Though as philparker has pointed out you would definitely need a pre-amp with this pick up. I've got an ART tube pre-amp that works well with this set up - I was planning on keeping it is as a back up but could include it in the sale if the price was right
  17.
Would this be a good starting bass for someone who's going to learn playing upright ?
Personally I reckon this is a great starting bass, it's certainly done a great job of getting me started :-)
  18.
Hello just wondering if this double bass is still available? Thanks, Jo
Hi Jo, yes the bass is still available :-)
  19.
Hi, I'm looking to buy a bass for my partner as a surprise for his 30th birthday on 2nd June. I will be in Grantham visiting my parents on 23rd May, so we could potentially meet then. Otherwise I live in London. Grantham is a 30 minute train journey from nottingham, or a 30 minute drive. Ula
Sent you a PM but working on my phone with a very dodgy internet connection so not 100% sure it sent, let me know if not.
  20.
how old is she and what do you like it for?
Not sure on the age, the guy I bought it from a year ago said he'd had it for a couple of years - I would guess around 5 years old?? I've only used it with my band for bluesy/rootsy type stuff, not playing anything else on it. Wouldn't really be looking for an acoustic bass at the moment but feel free to PM me if you want to make an offer
  21.
Love the recording! Great track.
Thanks!!
  22. I've recently bought a new double bass so up for sale is this Antoni 3/4 Double Bass, not sure which particular model this is, the chap I bought it from didn't know. This was my first double bass and has served me well as such, I'm well and truly hooked now, hence the new one! As you'll see from the photos its in good condition, the fingerboard is showing a little wear though this is only the paint being removed through playing, there's no wear to the wood underneath. Included in the sale is a Fishman BP100 pick up, I've seen these take a bit of flack in some reviews but I've always found it to give a decent sound when coupled with a pre-amp (I used an ART pre-amp with this to good effect). I've gigged this bass a few times and have never had any troubles with feedback using this set up. It's currently got the stock strings on, having tried a couple of other sets (which I'm keeping for my new bass) I'd say that these are of a reasonably low tension and give a good tone. You can listen to a recording of the bass with this string/pickup/pre-amp combination on this demo we did a few months back: https://soundcloud.c...od58/the-letter Also included is the hard case pictured, the case has seen better days - some of the poppers holding the fabric covering on have come off and the zip only closes about 90% of its length - but it does the job and protects the bass well If you're looking to get into playing double bass then I'd highly recommend this as a low cost starter set up, just grab a pre-amp and you're away. Would prefer a cash sale but I can always be tempted with trades for basses/guitars, I'm currently gassing for a semi-acoustic bass or some kind of telecaster, open to suggestions!! I'm based in Nottingham but can travel for delivery or to meet up, happy to discuss this. Anyway, on with the pics:
