Looking at getting a new (read cheap/used) bass - help
malbass replied to bassfunk's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I recently upgraded from an Antoni to a second hand Strunal that I found on eBay. After taking the Strunal to a luthier for a new bridge, soundpost, nut and set up, I'd spent a similar amount to your budget. In my case I'd say that the upgrade was most definitely worthwhile. The Antoni is a great starter bass and definitely served its purpose and got me hooked on Double Bass but I'm not convinced that it would have been worth spending money on trying to improve it. I'm sure if you're patient something will come up that meets your needs and fits your budget! -
would a normal bassamp be suitable for this bass?
Yep, I play through a normal bass amp with no problems. Though as philparker has pointed out you would definitely need a pre-amp with this pick up. I've got an ART tube pre-amp that works well with this set up - I was planning on keeping it is as a back up but could include it in the sale if the price was right
Hi, I'm looking to buy a bass for my partner as a surprise for his 30th birthday on 2nd June. I will be in Grantham visiting my parents on 23rd May, so we could potentially meet then. Otherwise I live in London. Grantham is a 30 minute train journey from nottingham, or a 30 minute drive. Ula
Sent you a PM but working on my phone with a very dodgy internet connection so not 100% sure it sent, let me know if not.
how old is she and what do you like it for?
Not sure on the age, the guy I bought it from a year ago said he'd had it for a couple of years - I would guess around 5 years old?? I've only used it with my band for bluesy/rootsy type stuff, not playing anything else on it. Wouldn't really be looking for an acoustic bass at the moment but feel free to PM me if you want to make an offer

I've recently bought a new double bass so up for sale is this Antoni 3/4 Double Bass, not sure which particular model this is, the chap I bought it from didn't know. This was my first double bass and has served me well as such, I'm well and truly hooked now, hence the new one! As you'll see from the photos its in good condition, the fingerboard is showing a little wear though this is only the paint being removed through playing, there's no wear to the wood underneath. Included in the sale is a Fishman BP100 pick up, I've seen these take a bit of flack in some reviews but I've always found it to give a decent sound when coupled with a pre-amp (I used an ART pre-amp with this to good effect). I've gigged this bass a few times and have never had any troubles with feedback using this set up. It's currently got the stock strings on, having tried a couple of other sets (which I'm keeping for my new bass) I'd say that these are of a reasonably low tension and give a good tone. You can listen to a recording of the bass with this string/pickup/pre-amp combination on this demo we did a few months back: https://soundcloud.c...od58/the-letter Also included is the hard case pictured, the case has seen better days - some of the poppers holding the fabric covering on have come off and the zip only closes about 90% of its length - but it does the job and protects the bass well If you're looking to get into playing double bass then I'd highly recommend this as a low cost starter set up, just grab a pre-amp and you're away. Would prefer a cash sale but I can always be tempted with trades for basses/guitars, I'm currently gassing for a semi-acoustic bass or some kind of telecaster, open to suggestions!! I'm based in Nottingham but can travel for delivery or to meet up, happy to discuss this. Anyway, on with the pics:

Freighting/shipping a bass (plus everything else I own...
malbass replied to basshead56's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Sounds like you've got it all covered to be honest. My younger brother moved down to NZ a couple of years back, not so much of a musician but he's mad keen on bikes and had four of them to take with him. He had a similar arrangement with a shipping company, packed everything carefully into a giant cardboard box and sent it off. He reckoned because it was sitting on a pallet the package was so heavy that it could only really be moved slowly, avoiding the risk of stuff being thrown around carelessly. Took a while for it all to arrive but it got there in one piece with no issues. -
Great looking bass. I would highly recommend Kai Dase who is in Nottingham: http://kaidaseviolins.com Great, honest luthier who knows how to set up basses. I love a NDBD! :-) Congrats!
Thanks for the reccommendation. Just dropped the bass off with Kai today. It needs a new bridge, soundpost and nut so turning out to be not quite the bargain I had thought but I'm sure it's going to sound a lot better than it does now. Kai was very patient with my lack of knowledge and was happy to spend time talking me through all the issues and options before we agreed on a plan to get it all fixed up. Can't wait to pick it up, hopefully in time for my next gig next Friday!!

Just bought a set of Velvet Blue db strings from Clarky, received them in the post very quickly, a pleasure do to business with. Many thanks!!!

Thanks for the responses guys. Much as I thought about the bridge, glad I pointed it out to the seller and got some money knocked off. Now to find a luthier!
-
Well, I wasn't expecting that when I woke up this morning! This popped up in my ebay searches, dropped the seller an email and he turned out to love just round the corner. Went round to have a look this evening, negotiated a great price and now its sitting upstairs in my office I'd been thinking about an upgrade from my cheaper Antoni starter bass and this seems like it will be just the job. Its a Strunal bass from Thomann, 5-6 years old according to the seller and in fantastic condition. The seller told me it had a new bridge and strings fitted last year, from what little I know of these matters I think the bridge could do with some work, it seems a little thick where the strings make contact. Any advice on that would be gratefully received. If you know of any luthiers close to Nottingham please let me know. Also, any idea what sort of strings are on it, the seller didn't know? Here's some pics:

Would highly recommend Andy Summers book 'One Train Later', really enjoyed it even though I'm not really a fan, some great stories from the sixties, jamming with Hendrix etc.
Has anybody ever constructed a pick up that attaches to the bridge like a clip on tuner? The Snark tuner I am using seems to have no trouble with the signal if you get it positioned correctly so maybe there is potential for a design there?
Fishman BP100 - like this http://www.lemurmusic.com/Fishman-BP-100-Upright-Bass-Pickup-Transducer/productinfo/A1460/ Seems to get some bad reviews but I quite like it, works well on my bass anyway.

Got these on here a couple of weeks back. If you've seen this thread then you'll know that they didn't suit my bass. No reflection on the strings, they were just a bit too much for my bass. They were sold to me having been on a bass for approx six months and they were only on mine for a couple of hours so still in great condition. Just looking to get back what I paid for them so £45 posted.

Having trouble changing strings - Sorted for now
malbass replied to malbass's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Having given it some thought and checked the bridge again I've come to the conclusion that the bridge isn't that far out of shape and that the shape would have no bearing on the tension that was placed on the snapped tail piece wire. So I got a replacement wire and have gone back to using the stock strings. It doesn't sound any where near as good but it works and is stable - I've decided I can live with that in the short term and will perhaps think about replacing strings/bridge once I've got past this gig in a couple of weeks. Thanks again for all the advice, really appreciate it!
You could try Kai, he's in Notts. www.kaidaseviolins.com
Thanks for the tip off - according to his website I could be looking at £150 for a new bridge from him - about half the value of the bass, didn't really want to spend that much! Thinking I might buy a cheap bridge from ebay and have a go at fitting it myself. I've got the old bridge to use as a template and with a bit of time and patience I feel I could get somewhere close. Would I be biting off more than I can chew?
