Cat Burrito

I've played in a couple of times as part of tours and it was great. We did an instore at the local record shop and played the Con Club, both very well attended.

I've own both a Gibson & have an Epi as a knockabout. My Epiphone was / is listed on here but I never bumped the thread as I seem to play it so much (plus I prefer having the cheaper one on display because it's no drama if the kids or cats knock it over). T-birds don't seem to have the resale value of Fenders but the through neck construction gives you an amazing bottom end that I never had in 20 years of Fender playing. The higher end Epi with the through neck and Gibson pickups is, in my mind, comparable with a high end MIM or CIJ Fender. Even the entry level Epi T-bird with the cheaper pickups and bolt on neck is a lot of fun. Sure my Gibson is superior but like with all bass kit, costing 5 times as much doesn't mean it is five times better.

I must, must, must like the music we're playing. Nobody who gets on my nerves over the course of a rehearsal / gig. People who can play something at least halfway decent and are prepared to learn the parts. Reliable people. Not afraid to buy the occasional drink at the bar. Professional attitude towards the band.

When I've been on a shift pattern I've booked the gigs so it meant I didn't feel bad when I was offered clashes. After 8 years I'm just going back to 1 weekend in 4 so I'd best raise my game again.

I'm just pleased my school photos weren't heavily featured on social media! I'd have a lot of explaining to do!

My current P-bass and my original are CIJ. I've owned several in the past and the QC has been more consistent than the MIM and USA ones I've owned (to be fair only one weak USA one but the point is these are great).

This reads as a really open and heart felt post. I'm sure you are not alone in what you have shared. I think many of us can relate to at least some aspects from this too.

I play in a CCR tribute and some of those songs are a struggle in the original key for our singer. I learn something up in E just to get to the rehearsal and be told we're doing this in C. Personally I opted for playing higher up the neck. Most people are listening to the vocal and I would rather that was right than the bass part was in the right key. 5 string or down tuning are both viable alternatives and I think it's just a case of whatever works for you. Does the singer sound great in a different key though or might you want to think about somebody better? Our guy totally delivers in the keys he picks so it wasn't a difficult decision to adjust the band to fit.

I love the Tech 21 Sansamp VT pedal and could absolutely just manage with this. To be fair this pedal aside I only really occasionally use a bit of chorus and a tuner pedal so there isn't a big list of things for me to do without.

Mum's old LP records of country music, 60s soul and old 50s rock n roll probably kickstarted my interest in music as a small boy. However it was the short lived Glam / Sleaze scene of the 80s that inspired me to actually start saving for my first instrument. I've probably spent most of my playing career trying to get back to those roots of the first records I've heard, whilst still having a soft spot for the guys who made me want to play too.

I had my 57ri Fender P-bass for 19yrs and still have it's pickup and pickguard.

[/quote] I was rather hoping other contributors would weigh in with their experiences but from my limited trial earlier it seemed to have an impact on the fretted notes too whilst I was playing. That said, I don't understand why / how that would be the case but it definitely sounded more Motown-y, I was playing it on a Fender P-bass which was strung with roundwound strings (a recent change for me after 20yrs of flats).

I certainly don't regret the purchase and my initial post does rather read as me damning it with faint praise.

Those reissues were advertised really cheap a couple of years back. Everywhere seems out of stock now.

Thomman do some nice European upright basses for under £1k, delivered set up. I too would avoid the Gear 4 Music plywood jobs. There is a lot to be said for the EUBs if the look isn't too important.

If it gets desperate, I've found chrome looks very well aged with a gentle rub of a dry brillo cloth. I've done that with replacement hardware on my old vintage basses in days gone by.

I think you just experiment and find a balance. I use both and try not to get too drawn into any of the countless rows across all the forums in the "pick vs fingers" debate. A bit of practice and you get used to flipping between the two at any length.

I have used mojo before and they were great so I'll be watching this thread like a hawk. I love the chrome pickup look too.

I don't think it particularly matters, either or. I've only ever moved a couple of threads and they've been much more obviously wrong like "I have a new car" in General Discussion rather than Off Topic. I wouldn't be too phased by seeing that in either. You may get a more technically correct response in the amp column but more opinions in general discussion.
