Most people will have their favourite era, usually according to what age they are. So no, I don't agree with Roger Daltry.

Upright bass and an Eastwood EEB-1 strung with flats. I did a dep at the weekend where I used a Fender though, just cos the main guy did. I'd love to get something garage-y looking like a Mosrite or some quirky Danelectro. Recording wise I have a Uke bass which sounds like an upright so I may use that on something when I get around to recording an EP next month.

My rig is always Ampeg portaflex (either a PF50t head or a PF500 into a PF115HE or PF410 cab) and the bass depends on the band - I range Americana through to 50s rock n roll through to a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute through to Iggy Pop meets Tom Petty solo project I'm involved in. It's crazy but the only constant throughout, aside me, is that Sansamp pedal!

Just a Boss Tuner, TC Electronic phaser and TC Electronic chorus - all used very sparingly. I use the suggested settings for Ampeg soundalike SVT or fliptop depending on which band & which bass. Interestingly we arrived at the fliptop setting quite by accident when recording as myself & the studio engineer were trying to find a sound - we literally stumbled upon the stock setting by total chance.

I could probably be talked into losing the board, so long as I keep my Tech21 Sansamp VT. I've recorded with it, made studio practice amps sound good & generally just leave it on if I'm playing. This one pedal changed my whole viewpoint on bass effects.

Just upright bass for me. My stepson was playing the baritone horn for a while and I must confess I'm liking the thread as I think our ears do naturally lean towards all things bass

I play both with pick & fingers, and fitted a Zero-Mod thumb rest a while ago to my 4003. It's long, so you can position further back on it, if you wish. I know it curves to fit the pickguard but you can rest your thumb at the back. That rickysounds link for the bezel looks really good.

I really rate my Hofner 500/8 Verythin, which is the 34" scaled version of the Hofner 500/7 Verithin. I heard they've just been discontinued but there are a few floating around still. It's classic whilst looking a bit different from the other long scale hollowbody basses.

Would they do tabs for Van Halen's Running with the Devil?

I'd go and see all my bands AND I have also gone and seen bands I was once in but left. I have to like the band / music as a criteria for me joining.

In the early days we had problems with LSD (Lead Singer Disease) in a couple of my early bands but once you all start getting a bit older the egos calm down.

Rockin' Around the Xmas Tree has come up a couple of times with me and is a real crowd pleaser.

We played a Skinhead pub in Brockworth in '94 looking like below. The lowest point was when a bar stool was thrown at the band onstage.... so we did an encore! They offered what could only be described as a "carry to the car" service once we finished. Apparently the pub closed down in the late 90s.

I did a session with Andy Lewis (ex- Paul Weller) circa 1999 / 2000 & was blown away by his Danelectro Longhorn to the point I recorded all 5 tracks with it. I've always said I'd get one & 18 years later I still haven't.

Hanoi Rocks. Lords of the New Church. Johnny Thunders. Dogs D'Amour. This was pretty much the soundtrack to my teens & although my tastes have broadened over the years, I still regularly play those bands now

SkinTrade. We had single of the week in RAW magazine, appeared on ITV but people had stopped making this sort of music around '91 / '92. We were still a couple of years behind the times. Good times. Sadly, I'm the only one who kept playing.

Giving my age away but this... I'm sure the forced happiness inadvertently inspired the Goth movement!

I play in a CCR tribute called Creedence Clearwater Revival Revival. It formed largely as a jokey conversation down the pub but we take it pretty seriously now. Two of the band are ex-pro (Chris the drummer was in Mega City Four and Richard the guitarist had some success with the Britpop era). Most of us do other bands but it's very much a social thing.

When you consider it is a business selling and they are going to milk The Pretenders link, sadly it isn't overpriced - just overpriced to about 99.9% of potential buyers! (but yeah, a bit of a stretch when you consider Nick isn't from the classic line up)
