1.
Not necessarily. The serial number decals came from a parts bin as well.
Well you live & learn. I'm not totally surprised by that.
2. Ah, you've edited them! Bass sounds great btw. I've always secretly wanted a Hamer 12 string
3. Your links aren't displaying properly. Should be;
4. This is the second thread where the link doesn't work?! Has the listing been pulled or have you mistyped the link?
5. Welcome Robbie, feel free to post pics of some of that gear in our Gear Porn section - you can keep the barb wire out of shot though
6. They were everywhere about three years ago but do seem less common now. I assume Fender bring out new ranges & push those instead. Personally I'd always favour a used Standard MIA over the HWY1 but the owners do seem to like them. I could never get on with the finish personally
7. Bought a Speakon speaker cable from Dave. Despite the snow it arrived really promptly with good comms. Another Basschat convert here
8.
The other thing to remember is that the S8 only dates the neck.
I obviously wasn't clear. I only meant the neck. I have an S9 Precision and the neck dates to early '79 where as the pots are '80. I'm sure the other posts are correct and I meant simply to state that the neck would have been made in 1978.
9. Quite a common problem with some Jazz basses too. I had it once and I solved it by selling the bass in the end! That was down to inexperience on my part (it was nearly 20yrs ago). New pickups usually do solve it but it's an expensive alternative if you can tweak what you have. Raising the height on one side should balance it better. I had a loud E and a loud G which was a major pain. My current Jazz has adjustable poles in the pickups so problem solved. Good luck sorting it
10. This month I have mostly been appreciating mostly
11. The resale value isn't great on pickups but if you must tinker, my thoughts are as follows. Fender don't make great pickups. They used to but something has gone wrong over the years that has allowed other market leaders to take over. (personal view). Fender pups are ok, but not what they used to be. Most pups on the market place are hotter, over wound and beef up the sound. I like a more retro / trad / vintage tone. From my experiences Wizard are great. The guy is friendly and helpful. However Seymour Duncan just pip it for me and offer a better quality pup. EBay has some NOS caps for sale for about a fiver and I have one of these in each of my basses bar one. If you want to replicate the vintage tones of your 62RI I'd go down this route. If you want it hotter, I can't say I have any experience. You could always try these mods and if it doesn't sound cool, EBay the new parts and stick the originals back in. Either way keep the original parts in case things do change and you come to sell the bass. These sound amazing btw http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/anti...1104405_06_149/ but don't come cheap This is a decent upgrade http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...jb1_vintage_fo/ All just my 2c and I don't suggest I know any more or less than anyone else. I have however changed pups / caps in five of my 6 Fender basses.
12.
I'd say that's an eighties bass - the S8***** serials covered up until about 1982.
Unless it's a gap in my knowledge, the S9 serial number was the one which went into the early 80s, not the S8. I would have said it was more something like S7 + 5 digits = 1977-1978 S8 + 5 digits = 1977-1978 S9 + 5 digits = 1978-1981 E0 + 5 digits = 1979-1981 E1 + 5 digits = 1980-1981 I do agree it sounds like something either hybrid or parts based. Am I wrong on dates with the S8 / S9?
13. Thanks for that. I figured it was reasonably modern as it's Indonesian. Not to my tastes but just curious
14.
I have the opposite problem:
It works though
15.

Love this pic Missed it when you originally posted
16. I thought I'd come across most models but I don't recall these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SQUIER-FENDER-BASS-G...=item255fdad0db
17. I think it depends on the colour of the bass. The red ones on my Rotosound flats clash more but I have the strings you mention on a Mocha Brown 1978 P-bass and the colour kind of works there. Perhaps with a different colour bass they'd be more of an issue for me?
18.
I honestly doubt anyone will give you £150 for mim neck. Even if it's new, it's still the "lowest propper Fender" model. I'd say somewhere around £100 is fair price (just the neck, no hardware). No offense, just trying to help.
Harks back to my original post then. There is a US seller who breaks up new Fenders and sells the parts. They actually go for around the £150 mark BUT that said they don't sell quickly. I guess ultimately anything is worth what people are prepared to pay for it.
19. I've done all my electric bass shows this year on 2 basses and it would have just been one but I'd lent one to a US band who were touring so when we did a couple of shows with them I used the one I'd lent out. After a few years of GAS I never thought I'd get back to that stage and it felt good
20. One of the coolest looking basses on Basschat IMHO
21. I used to hate them but I quite like them now. I like the green on the Fender 9050s stainless steel flats as it happens.
22. As a blanket generalisation it sounds like you want to aim for pickups with a vintage or traditional tag. This is what I use and interestingly most pickups tend to be designed to give a bass more omph & the vintage repo pups are lesser sellers (only found this out recently talking to a Seymour Duncan rep). Personally I really rate Seymour Duncan and would advise you check out http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...jb1_vintage_fo/ Failing that I do like Wizard and the 64s would be a good second choice http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/shop.asp?category=Bass I've usually change pups in my basses. I'm not a big fan of Fender pickups these days. It's a fairly simple mod but tends to really wake my basses up
23. Yes then, so maybe £150? What were you thinking?
24. Welcome Norm
25. Happy Xmas one & all I hope 2011 is a great year for us all
