Capacitors - pickups. Should I bother?
Cat Burrito replied to holio.cornolio's topic in Accessories and Misc
The resale value isn't great on pickups but if you must tinker, my thoughts are as follows. Fender don't make great pickups. They used to but something has gone wrong over the years that has allowed other market leaders to take over. (personal view). Fender pups are ok, but not what they used to be. Most pups on the market place are hotter, over wound and beef up the sound. I like a more retro / trad / vintage tone. From my experiences Wizard are great. The guy is friendly and helpful. However Seymour Duncan just pip it for me and offer a better quality pup. EBay has some NOS caps for sale for about a fiver and I have one of these in each of my basses bar one. If you want to replicate the vintage tones of your 62RI I'd go down this route. If you want it hotter, I can't say I have any experience. You could always try these mods and if it doesn't sound cool, EBay the new parts and stick the originals back in. Either way keep the original parts in case things do change and you come to sell the bass. These sound amazing btw http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/anti...1104405_06_149/ but don't come cheap This is a decent upgrade http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...jb1_vintage_fo/ All just my 2c and I don't suggest I know any more or less than anyone else. I have however changed pups / caps in five of my 6 Fender basses. -
I'd say that's an eighties bass - the S8***** serials covered up until about 1982.
Unless it's a gap in my knowledge, the S9 serial number was the one which went into the early 80s, not the S8. I would have said it was more something like S7 + 5 digits = 1977-1978 S8 + 5 digits = 1977-1978 S9 + 5 digits = 1978-1981 E0 + 5 digits = 1979-1981 E1 + 5 digits = 1980-1981 I do agree it sounds like something either hybrid or parts based. Am I wrong on dates with the S8 / S9?

Thanks for that. I figured it was reasonably modern as it's Indonesian. Not to my tastes but just curious

I thought I'd come across most models but I don't recall these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SQUIER-FENDER-BASS-G...=item255fdad0db

I think it depends on the colour of the bass. The red ones on my Rotosound flats clash more but I have the strings you mention on a Mocha Brown 1978 P-bass and the colour kind of works there. Perhaps with a different colour bass they'd be more of an issue for me?
I honestly doubt anyone will give you £150 for mim neck. Even if it's new, it's still the "lowest propper Fender" model. I'd say somewhere around £100 is fair price (just the neck, no hardware). No offense, just trying to help.
Harks back to my original post then. There is a US seller who breaks up new Fenders and sells the parts. They actually go for around the £150 mark BUT that said they don't sell quickly. I guess ultimately anything is worth what people are prepared to pay for it.

Never thought i would end the year with the same model bass
Cat Burrito replied to dave_bass5's topic in General Discussion
I've done all my electric bass shows this year on 2 basses and it would have just been one but I'd lent one to a US band who were touring so when we did a couple of shows with them I used the one I'd lent out. After a few years of GAS I never thought I'd get back to that stage and it felt good -
One of the coolest looking basses on Basschat IMHO

I used to hate them but I quite like them now. I like the green on the Fender 9050s stainless steel flats as it happens.

As a blanket generalisation it sounds like you want to aim for pickups with a vintage or traditional tag. This is what I use and interestingly most pickups tend to be designed to give a bass more omph & the vintage repo pups are lesser sellers (only found this out recently talking to a Seymour Duncan rep). Personally I really rate Seymour Duncan and would advise you check out http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...jb1_vintage_fo/ Failing that I do like Wizard and the 64s would be a good second choice http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/shop.asp?category=Bass I've usually change pups in my basses. I'm not a big fan of Fender pickups these days. It's a fairly simple mod but tends to really wake my basses up
Got a good mind to file the paypal claim now
That's what I did in the end. I won't use them again. Sorry to hear of anothers misfortunes (again!)
That's the shop front of Roqsolid covers - I've always had brilliant service from them.
That's who I use now - use the Basschat search function & you'll hear mainly incredibly positive things

I'm in agreement with skankdelvar's initial post. As long as you are up front about your needs & goals. I spent 8 months playing with musicians where the drummer wanted to play loads of functions and the singer didn't want anything more than a weekly rehearsal. Ultimately it split the band up. I found it useful getting together and fine tuning my chops, even though traditionally I've always been about getting out & playing live. I bet there are a lot of players in your position. Good luck

I was at school near Swindon in the very early 80s so XTC were pretty big news. I'm not a huge fan of the 80s but they were a great band
I used to be a critic. Now I just watch and enjoy. Occasionally I'll discuss their performance if I'm with another musician. Mostly I'll try to be positive about everyone I see. It's not easy to play live and anyone who gets out of their bedroom and puts the effort into rehearsing and playing a gig deserves some respect.
Couldn't have put it better myself

If you can afford it, have lessons. I'd also recommend just playing with other musicans. Don't worry about if people like different stuff, you'll progress faster playing with other players. At 15yrs old there is plenty of time to find your dream band / players so you may as well learn with some others whilst you are getting yourself up to speed.

Adding myself to a long list of people who can't help you with what size Allen key you need, welcome to Basschat
Whilst I`ve not used the AD200B, from what I understand the Terrors eq works the same.
All Orange gear appears to work on the same simple set up. If you like it, great, but if not then it isn't for you.
