1. I have a squier 50s and its a great bass. The quality is amazing for the money. I have no experience of a mex, it it compares very favourably to my CIJ precision. If it bothers you, the biggest drawback is the name on the headstock, but I stopped worrying about this years ago. What we should remember is in the 50s and 60s, when the 'great' guitars were made, technology was limited, and rechniques and materials were not as good as they are today. Fender had a factory, it wasnt a building full of great cratsmen, just a bunch of men and women making a product, and earning a living. No disrespect at all. Today with CNC technology, there should be no reason to have anythining other than a first class product, and a CNC router doesnt care which country its situated in. Some items may be compromised if they are made to a price, but the pickup looks good, the pots are reasonable, its even shielded, [although not brilliantly] I am very tempted to add the 60s squier to my collection but there is a G&L on its way to me so I will have to wait.
  2.
Really really really really really don't want to do this but.......... my back cannot take another season of lugging this gear so will have to go down the lightweight route /quote] Sold mine a few years ago for exactly the same reason What a great amp it was, I tried to recreate the sound with a traveller and an 2x10xt cab but it wasnt the same. You didnt buy it from Mathew did you? as he had mine, and used it with a second 2x10
  3.
Please forget what I said about the band. I decided to walk due to musical differences between the drummer and myself. It had been niggling me for some time and the last rehearsal just confirmed my views. so bandless again.
Tough Luck My band has been together for 14 years. Every time I get p... of about something or someone, I remind myself there are far more arseholes outside the band than in it. I think getting 4 people together that can get on without musical egos getting in the way, is incredibly difficult before we even get as far as can they play their instrument reasonable well. You and i are of similar yoof and although there would be some benefits to being 21 again, [no iffy back, gear because you like it, not because its light] at least we have all calmed down [a bit] theres no way I could put up with 3 other testosterone fuelled musicians these days.
  4.
Back to The Royal Oak, Whitehill this Saturday. Used to be a regular gig for us a few years back, and for more years than I like to think about, then it shut and I thought it had been razed to the ground, but no, it seems to have risen phoenix like & to be booking bands again. First outing for the Epifani cab with the MB combo as The Fountain last week was too small.
I used to go there and play in the 70s and 80s when John sullivan had it, havent been there for years. Like you I thought it closed down. I used to vibrate the glasses off his shelf playing e chords through my much missed acoustic 456 Had 2 pints of bishops tipple once and had to sleep in the car, dreadfull stuff We are in eastleigh so I will try and catch you another time.
  5.
Hi All, This may not be porn to those who don't like stingrays, but this does it for me. Just arrived today and thought i'd share it. I Have a bit of a thing for Musicman basses, so i'll post some more on the Musicman porn thread, but thought this deserved its own. Special to anyone else?
Thats really pretty Ive got a 20th anniversary but I really like that
  6.
That's great, thank you for all the feedback! Strange question, but I don't suppose any owners have the means to weigh their aforementioned bass? It's just that I have no way of trying one out seeing as searches in London and Bristol have proved fruitless! If it clocks in less than my Lakland Glaub then it'll be ideal for gigging....
Mine is 8.4 lbs and is lighter than my us jo osbourne If the glaub is to heavy for you I dont mind doing a swap
  7. I bought one just after christmas, and I have had previously a 51 japenese reissue. I sold the 51 because I found the nech stocky. and the lack of a for arm chamfer uncomfortable. I intended to replace the bridge, [I may still do because I dont like its bulk] and the pickup, but Ive decided its not necessary. I have fralins in two of my passive basses and think they are great pickups, but im impressed with the squier pick up. Its needed some tweaking, but individual basses to vary . I tried one somewhere else and it was better set up. I think they are amazing value for the money. Only criticism is although the cavity has sheilding paint and a proper earth wire into the cavity, the sheilding paint doesnt cover the whole cavity. Ive just sheilded mine with copper foil. Light weight, very good finish, sounds nice A steal I paid £229
  8.
they look foul, thats such a shame
What a disapointment. On the other hand I suppose they have got to try to make them look different, They will want to estsblish a 'brand' and it might take a while to get used to it.. Personally [ducks head] I think Mark Bass looks awfull, although Im getting a bit more used to it, but they seem to be doing ok.
  9. I intended to pay a visit but ended up ferrying my kids around Will try to get to the next one

  11.
OT but related to the subsequent OT discussion.. Patrick McGoohan just died.. It's his fault so many of us got Sevens, well that and fact that Chapman had already product placed the Elan for Emma Peel in The Avengers..
Just looking at that elan [and mrs peel] What memories what memories
  12.
Oh and a Caterham is Top Gear car of the year ??? Much as I love them that is a somewhat odd result
I have always wanted a 7, and it has absolutely nothing to do with a BRG green and yellowr seven KAR120C seen on a certain TV program that I still watch occasinally and still cant understand. Maybe I need drugs. I was going to buy one and I went to to Caterham and had a test drive but my wife at the time got in and couldnt get out again with any dignity so that was that. I doubt I could get in one these days either

  15. You sound a bit like my band, we are a three piece plus girl singer. We have a pair of HZ bins and HZ tops with new speakers in but biamped through 2 seperate power amps which are a bit bigger than yours. We put through vocals , BVs, extra backing, and a tickle of guitar. Neither I or the drummer mike or DI In. With our old drummer, he had a bunch of mikes, I had to di, and the vocals were never properly heard. If you are doing social type functions, and you are not trying to be Led Zep I would strongly advise you not to mike up the drummer unless you have to, and make the band play to the level of your vocals. Go out the front, or get someone you trust to listen and help you get the balance. You very rarely hear people ask you to turn up. I have seen so many bands who try to mike everything up, and end up with a sound that is Dire.
  16.
Now that is a nice idea although I think that the Musicman did something like that a couple of years ago. This is getting very very OT. Perhaps we should start a Lotus page in Off Topic and continue the car chat there. Back OT, I couldn't fault Ashdown service when they fixed my ABM500 a few years ago and returned it in a couple odf days. It was only when I sold it and the buyer took it to have it serviced and the Tech found that the underside of the motherboard had been bodge repaired with Tin-copper wire where it had blown. This was a warranty repair when they should have replaced the motherboard completely. I was none too happy and asked to be removed from their web site.
Thats pretty poor, I remember seing your piccy on the web site Are you back in a band now?
  17.
HAHAHA nice one. Still, I hope to see it on the road oneday. Shame to let it waste away. By the way, Lakeside Engineering near Addlestone are excellent Lotus guys. All Ex Bell and Colvill.
Heres a link to the second elite Early 70s http://www.motorbase.com/profiles/vehicle/...i=6;p=652389269 Before I got my elan I had an MGB, and I visited Bell and Collville where I intended to buy what had been the original prototype S3 elan which had been totally rebuilt by lotus. On the way back, the gearbox went in my MGB and I had to drive from guildford to fareham in second gear. By the time I got it fixed, I lost the S3. I love the black and gold JPS colours. I find it somewhat amusing that people at work over the last few years have used the black and gold theme on our website and in other areas thinking its new and cool Perhaps a black and gold JPS Jazz Bass
  18.
the elan the 60s lotus? I met one of the lotus designer from the 60s while working in shrewsbury jessops. Wanted a copy of a bw photo of a old lotus with 3 men around it. I saw it and said "I love the old cars, they had class and were just awesome" to which he replyed "thank you, I helped design it,thats me*points to him on photo*" ....now I dont get star struck but I suddenly went very nervous around him while talking cars for a min.busy shop...but who cares when you have this guy in front of you? hehe
Originally produced as a kit car to avoid purchase tax, the predecessor to vat 1558 twin cam based on the ford anglia. Needed constant attention. very Light weght 110BHP if i remember correctly. but was an absolute joy to drive in the not very busy roads.I wonder how I am still alive. All technology was relatively basic. Cars have come a long way since then, Chapman was a great designer, design the bare minimum to keep the weight down. I was always underneath the bloody thing. I remember took me three evenings lying underneath to cut through a seized high tensile bolt on a rear wishbone, using a 3 inch length of hacksaw wrapped in a bit of rag, in an unheated garage in mid winter.
  19.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I had no idea they made the Elite as a 2 + 2, only the Elan.
there were 2 elites the first one was the predecessor to the elan. and the one after the 7 I think
  20. As an ex guitar player I tried a jazz and a precision and couldnt get on with the long scale so i bought a new Gibson EBO for 183gns in 1969 From Minns Music in southampton Now £2535 It was awfull, went back for a refret after 3 months and i swapped it for an old precision which i still have
  21.
My Elise, has mini metro wing mirrors, a cheap £5 rear view mirror, Renault gearbox, Rover engine, Vauxhall indicator stalks and Peugeot dash buttons. It's cheaper for me to run an Elise than it was my Renault Megane on service, parts, tax and fuel. Its just not as practical Anyway, we should get this back onto topic and away from cheap plastic sports cars :) /quote] I used to have an original elan [JAP 4D] Unreliable as hell. but wonderfull, Mixture of bits of cars, mainly ford, hillman imp and others. Service every 3000 miles. twin weber carbs which never seemed to stay tuned, I used to carry a home made 1x15 where the passenger seat should go.
  22.
I have problems transporting my 2x10 + head around, so i thought id kill 2 birds with one stone (as they say) and use one 4ohm cab to get full power in a compact system. Although after a quick ponder.....i suppose its more to do with how much air you push?
I bought a fairly old acoustic 402 1x15 speaker cab with an 220 amp last year. It had a 15 ohm knackered organ speaker, and the cab was designed as a 4 ohm. I gigged it with an 8 ohm eminence from another cab for a while, and eventually bought a new bass light speaker for about £100 I cant hear the difference in volume. Alex has made similar comments on various threads. Theres nothing wrong with 4 ohm except they are more difficult to sell, because most amps wont handle a 2 ohm load, which is what you would get if youu added a second 4 ohm cab.
  23.
Absolutely!!! It should come as no surprise that the vast majority of venues currently fitted with limiters (in my experience, obviously) ARE using equipment which may well be obsolete but certainly DOES CUT OFF.
Im not sure these things are obsolete, or badly set up, or just not very good. We used to play venues where there was almost like a traffic light, and now in 4 of our regular venues, they have like a new type bar graph which gives dotted green line, then amber, then Red and then oh bugger. These are frequency sensitive, so I can play a G, and get 1 or 2 green lights, then I cant remember if it was F# or Ab [ the drummer cant tell the difference] and its maxed out on the red. Providing they work properly, and they are set to a reasonable level, I dont mind too much and its good discipline. When they are uncertain, its like playing on a knife edge. Maybe we can get rid of the deaf soundmen who think the loudest thing should be the bass drum, and all the bass is lost in a big fuzzy mess. I saw a very good band recently, and not only could I not hear the singer [how unusual] I couldnt here the guitar!!!!
  24. Any reason for a 4 ohm particulalry? The difference in volume is minimal, you would get more of a result with better efficiency drivers, and an 8 ohm cab is easier to sell on.
