1.
With some rags and a few mods my rumbles went from this: to this: Cheers P.S. - Any similarity with a well known fellow BC cabinet maker's products its not a coincidence...
Very nice and retro
2. Almost all my basses are budget (< £250, the fender was a little more expensive at about £500), and I take great pleasure in playing them all. I leave exotic woods, fancy finishes and subtle details to those who appreciate them.
3. First "gig" was playing poor rock n roll covers over and over for about 3 hours at the opening day of a 50's rock n roll-inspired clothes shop. We were all cooped up in the attic, so one could see us. We couldn't stand up, so we had to sit on upturned paint buckets. It was something like 1989 and I was about 14... Another good early gig was maybe the year after, when we somehow got asked to play at some rich guy's garden party. We had to hump all of our kit up a series of steep hills and narrow outdoors stairs, and were perched on a grassy ledge above the main grounds. No singer, so played 12 bar blues and a simple swing in Am for about 3 hours, but they loved us, and got us a hat full of money at the end. I remember we were utterly amazed at the amount of money we made (like £600 or, we were about 16 at the time). We ended up investing it all in some truly ancient PA system with powered speakers and built in tape echo in the mixer. I wonder who has it still...
4. Yours truly at it with the T40. I hope you like reggae
5.
My band did the same shift last week and I really enjoyed it. I don't think it's the amp, I think it's the cab, as even at pretty low volumes the sound is naff and even when I used my TC Electronic amp the sound didn't improve. I suspect if the cab was on the ground instead of on beer crates the sound would improve but of course that might make it difficult for the engineer to get a good bass sound out front due to bass frequencies travelling through the stage. Paul the usual engineer tends to put a lot of bass through the PA which is what I tend to listen to and I keep the amp volume very low on stage.
Yep, stopped twiddling the controls on the amp almost immediately and got on with it. The sound out front was probably ok, judging from what I heard from the previous band. I hear what you're saying about the cab though. When I went on to set up I found that the previous guy had the volume on at full, and gain at 60%. Clearly doesn't believe in foldback monitors
6.
Line6 Studio 110 would be my choice
Really? I tried it twice in two different shops, and both times I found it very muddy and frankly underwhelming. I like old amps and old school sounds, so modern sizzle or clarity isn't my thing, but the sounds I was getting were quite poor IMO. Loud though! I also briefly owned a line 6 bass pod, used for one gig as a DI/preamp for the PA, and sold immediately after for the same reasons. Clearly a matter of taste!
7. Played the late, late shift at whistlebinkies in edinburgh. Load in at 11.45 pm, start at 12.30, play til closing time at 2.45 Really good crowd reaction, loads of dancing going on. Loads of foreign studenty types realy enjoying their reggae and rocksteady, joined by some quality selection of locals! Who knew so many people are out so late on a school night, awesome. Going to work this morning wasn't very rock n roll though, i tell you Played the aerodyne P which is still the easiest bass to play i've ever used! Sound from the amp was a bit pants, more midrangy than I like midrangy and quite distorted, but it's the house amp (ashdown mag 300 + mag 410) so can't complain too much. I actually think it was the foldbacks that were distorting on the low notes, but hey ho, I could hear myself ok. I presume it was a lot better off stage, as a couple of fellow bass players in the audience didn't particularly comment on it.

9. This? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/161860-tecamp-puma-110-combo/ I had a tecamp amp + cab and it was fantastic. I regret having sold it.
10.
Just branching off from my SWR SM-500 saga as it's truck me that I'm already £55 down and if I throw more at the offending amp I'm a fair way to having purchased an Ashdown Little Giant 1000 from Thomann for £234. Now the SWR originally retailed for £1500, you can now get it for £499 from Bass Direct, I think mine was £320 third hand. But really this just reflects the rapidly declining costs in the electronics world. I know SWR is meant to be a luxury ride but at present it's giving me the heebie jeebies with it's 'sometimes I fart and buzz, sometimes I don't' routine. C'mon persuade me not to lose faith in old school amps...
Can't speak for your specific amp or case, but in general you do uneconomical repairs (more than the value of the amp) only if you are particularly attached to the thing. I personally had no problem spending more in servicing an amp than I paid for it (peavey mark III, HH, homemade valve amp), because I liked the sound and general feel of the things. Bad service doesn't help, though...
11. oh, and the magnum is something else too...
12. I really really want the westone rail but can't afford it. Pants.
13. Epiphone zenith?
14.
Ok, just had a good listen to that, nice sounding bass. Of course its running through some tubes in there (I'd bet on it) and driving them good and hard, which means its compressing nicely, and adding a load of harmonic overtones, and a good bit of overdrive, and the tape isnt exactly being tickled with signal either, which is doing even more compression, and adding a bunch more harmonics. You cant have your cake and eat it, this is a heavily processed bass sound, its not remotely 'pure', and it certainly isnt bland, it just happens to be a sort of processed bass sound that you like and associate with how a bass 'should' sound (which is a mythical entity at best). That particular bass sound is pretty much what the daptones label are doing (super early real deal funk), and the last thing they do is keep anything pure, its all about letting the sh*tiness out! Check out this article about their process and this video:- They arent afraid of processing its just they use the processing inherent in the devices they are using, rather than a load of digital processing. Horses for courses, same diff really though, you either like the sound ort you dont....
I agree, and that is a seriously interesting article and video! I'd love to be recorded somewhere like that!
15.
Already used examples, here's one again, try the intro to 'Tighten Up' Archie and the Drells for a natural sound of flat strings. I would also repeat that no-one has ever suggested a 'pure sound' has ever been recorded and reproduced nor even desired, there's no extremes in this argument at all so no point going to them, just a direction. Think of the food analogy and some seasoning (which you can also taste) on a fresh pork chop compared to a McD (about which someone once said the TWO slices of gherkin is to prevent it being classified as a sweet).
I am beginning to understand now that your point is not so much about the "natural sound of an un-amplified electric bass guitar", rather more about the fact that the overall approach to bass sound is moving (has moved) away from simple amplification and processing. If that is so, fair enough.
16. Personally, I like (or not like) the sound that the bass+amp+cabs produce. To me they're all part of the same instrument, given that each of them doesn't make any real usable sound on its own. To me, the sound of an unplugged electric bass guitar is irrelevant, as it is an incomplete instrument. You can find me huddled at the bottom of my bunker, wearing a tin hat...
17. From 7pm, at the Wee Red Bar (inside Edinburgh College of Art), £5 Red2Red to start (featuring yours truly), followed by This R 2Tone and Big Fat Panda Charity night with some serious skankin!
18. Very nice, i like!
19.
Fender Rumble 112 cab - £250ish at GAK - would handle most of the power from th MB500. Weighs 24 lbs.
I was in a similar situation, and opted for this. Got mine for just over £200 in a local shop. I have used it with my TC RH450 and the HH amp. Happy.
20. I am at my happiest soundwise using one of my cheap old amps with an old cabinet, but that's just the sound I like. I recently did a paid 2.5 hours gig using a £100 rig. I loved it.
21. ok just me then
22. Essentially it kills the sustain of the note. I use bits of packing foam for certain reggae parts, it help to avoid unpleasant overlapping of notes and give a thumpy, oldies sound
23. One is a jazz and one is a precision...they sound quite different, it all depends on what sound you want. I have a cv jazz and it's excellent. I never bought a CV precision as I already have the aerodyne.
24. I would try youtube, a few samplers there
25. My pal plays traditional greek music, using his lovely hand-made cretan lute (laouto) (http://www.crete-luthiers.gr/ProductsEng.aspx). He's now being offered some gigs, so he's looking for a hard shell case. Needless to say, they're impossible to find, so I'm asking if anyone knows of anyone who either sells unusally shaped cases, or makes bespoke ones. The lute is the same shape as a bouzouki, with a longer neck and bigger body. It fits in a large guitar softcase. cheers!
