Get a used Spector Re-Bop or Spector Euro/LX and put it through a Sansamp...
Spectors are perfect for metal IMHO. I play in a metal band and my Euro is perfect for it. As a matter of fact I just happen to have a Rebop for sale /Shameless plug

Protest the Hero - Sequoia Throne http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Doxu960NY0 Now that I know the tapping bits are dubbed I feel far less insecure about my inability to play it properly!
Hmm Good point. What kind of prices does he 'roughly' charge for tradtional basses?
Prices here: http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/jspec.htm I guess you're looking at anything north of £835, depending on how much you want on it.

You could get Jon Shuker to make you a 5 string jazz in the style of a Geddy, then you'd get everything you want!

I dig in a lot because I find the attack helps me to cut through the mix more. I might have to work on my 3 finger technique a little more, because I mainly use it for gallops as I can get sustained semiquavers more even with just 2 fingers.
-
I've been working on some faster songs to push my technique a bit and specifically I've been working some old Metallica and some tech metal. Like Battery, Disposable Heroes by Metallica, some Sikth and some Necrophagist I find that I can play all the riffs up to speed when practising but after playing for 2 mins my hands start to feel like they are going to fall off so I find it hard to get through whole songs. So what do you tech/thrash metal guys do other than using a pick? I know it will come with practise but are there any warm up or speed exercises I could do? Also I find string skipping in fast riffs like this awkward, is maintaining the LRLRLR plucking pattern the best way to go on this? --------3-----3-------3----------- ------2-----2-------2-------------- ---1------1-------1-------3---4--- -0-------0------0-------1---1------

I sweat a lot and get through strings very quickly because I like the new string sound. I like the Rotosound Swingbass 66 strings - currently using the Billy Sheehan set on my Jazz in fact. To save money I've got this big pot of methylated spirits (the purple stuff that's mostly ethanol) which I keep strings in for about 24 hours and they sound like new again for a while. Plus I've been using alcohol hand gel before I play to keep my hands cleaner.

I can't stop watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQVpITyOdc8...feature=related I don't know if it's the crabwalking, the jogging-on-the-spot moshing, the vocoder, the cheesy piano parts, the dance remix at the end or the fact that all the guys look like clones. These guys have become quite an internet phenomenon, purely because of how bizzare they are.
My advice is this - get a bass you can live with and keep it for years, learn to deal with it despite it's shortcomings, show it who's boss, master it and get what you want from it instead of wasting time buying and selling basses because they're not quite right. Certainly get it set up and adjusted to suit you, but don't just give up on it because you can - your perfect bass will find you when you stop looking and it will be right under your nose.
I'm with you 100% on this. But I can't help feeling that when I drop £3k on a bass I shouldn't have to make a huge effort to get it to do what I want. I'm not suggesting that because it's expensive it should perform well, just that people (myself included) would expect to get what they pay for. Thats a great video you posted by the way.

EDIT: I took some pictures of the actual bass for your viewing pleasure. Sorry about the quality, not got my camera with me right now so these 2MP phone camera pictures will have to do for the time being. I'm also interested in trades for Statuses (Statii?), Musicmans, Laklands, Warwick etc. On hold

My custom P bass - Shuker bass building course 20/07/09
TDM replied to Mikey R's topic in Build Diaries
That's a great looking and sounding bass you've got there! That second riff you played, it's the Basstasters riff isn't it? Do you know if it's actually a riff from a song or just a lick they came up with? -
I need to clear out some wood that I've had stockpiled for various builds: Hard maple neck laminates: 1180mm long, 25mm wide and 45mm thick I've got four of these, all absolutely identical except for one which has some damage towards one end which only takes up half of the thickness and 5cm of length. You should be able to cut that bit out anyway. I've also got one slightly larger one at: 1200mmx35mmx45mm They are planed all around, done on big industrial machinery at a local joinery shop Korina neck blanks Three of them: 29 1/2" long, 3 1/4 wide, 1" thick 29 3/4" long, 3 3/8" wide, 3/4" thick 29 3/4" long, 3 1/4" wide, 3/4" thick Planed on two faces Sapele 686mm long, 190mm wide, 50mm thick Planed on two faces enough for two guitar necks Ash (possibly) 1000mm x 165mm x 29mm Maple - £5 each, £6 for the bigger one Korina - £5 each Sapele - £10 Ash - £20 Feel free to make me an offer on multiple items. I must say though, Craft supplies sells neck laminates at £9 each, and mahogany neck blanks at £18 each, and unplaned ash body blanks at £40 so I think these prices are pretty reasonable. Postage by Royal Mail standard Parcels is £4.40 and Parcelforce is £13

That's some really nice grain on that fretboard - looks a lot better as a fretless.

I don't understand why Fender MIM necks seem to be worth so much. I keep seeing MIM bass necks going for £70-80 and today a pair of warped strat necks went for £50 and £60 each. Maybe I should sell the one I've got lying around......
-
That's looking really good. Where do you buy your wood from? if you don't mind me asking.
