1.
I've just got my GCSE result for Music and got full marks in the practical side. Just play a grade 3 piece and play it perfect, there is no way they can not give you full marks if you play everything exactly as it is on the sheet you provide them to show what you are playing.
+1 to this. I got full marks on the solo performance by playing a grade 6 piano piece. A couple of my friends did grade 4/5 pieces and got the same marks as me so as long as it's grade 3+ and you nail it you will do well. Ask your teacher what the exam board awards marks for. They should provide a list of "hoops" that you have to jump through to get marks. For example I think one of the requirements for wind instrument playing was the ability to play high notes So if you picked a piece with one high note in it, you'd get the mark. I don't know what you have to do for bass specifically, as I played piano for both my group and solo performances. But this is me playing my GCSE piece: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/867382/joekang%...merwanderer.mp3
2. If it fits a standard fender neck pocket I'd be interested too. Is it thicker than a P bass neck?
3. Is there any chance you could post this?
4. Can't believe I didn't see this! A couple of weeks ago I think a Fortress was sold as a Rockbass Fortress for £300 with some sort of Warwick combo included. Gutted I missed out on that one!
5. Does anybody know where I can get a set of 5 flatwound strings long enough for a 40" bass? I'd imagine the total length needed to be around 47". Spending £75 on a set of the NS strings isn't part of the plan, and neither is spending 100+ on a set of DB strings
6. Bump! I think all trade offers were either not what I was looking for or seem to have fallen through. £450 collected, come on guys!
7. When I don't want to fire up the ENGL I use a couple of VSTs in Cubase. I mainly use this one: http://sites.google.com/site/nickcrowlab/ That emulates the preamp and poweramp and then I run Voxengo Boogex next in the chain which is a cab simulation. http://catharsis.supremepixels.com/impulses/ <- I usually use those impulses It's a 100% free and it sounds surprisingly good, here's a little clip of some Opeth http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/867382/Full.mp3
8. You need some jewelers pliers, and you can grind them flush with a bench grinder or a belt sander.
9. I know Reverb used to stock them but by the looks of it they don't anymore. Electro Music in Donny have had a few but apparently they don't sell well enough to keep getting them in. Can't really think of many more local places now. Anybody know where I can have a go with a Bongo, HH 5 string ideally but any Bongo will do, as I just want to get an idea of the ergonomics (I love the look but I don't know if I'll like the feel)
10. Bongos are very high output basses in my experience. I tried one when I was buying my Spector and it was the only other bass in the shop that came close to that sort of output.
11. The guy at Wavelength Music (London Road, Sheffield) quoted me £30 to pull the frets out and then extra to fill in the slots and level the board. So I'd say around £70. Originally I was planning on doing the slot filling myself as I had the tools. I don't see why Jon wouldn't do a defret, unless he's particularly busy. A few months ago he did some fret crowning on my electric guitar so I'm sure he does all sorts of repair/modding work. Electro Music in Donny would also do it I imagine. Their refrets start at around £100 so I can't imagine a defret to cost more than that. If it's a cheapish bass I'd consider doing it yourself as the tools and materials needed don't cost that much.
12. I'm not a huge fan of Ibanez basses either. But it's mainly because I think the necks are too thin. There are just some basses out there that you won't like and if you like your Squier Jazz then there's no need to get another bass. Getting used to 5 strings will take a bit of time, but if you're convinced you need the range and flexibility you'll adapt to it.
13. ^ Sorry, I think the Sei is too out of my league Bump!
14. That seems slightly OTT. For over 2k I'd expect higher grade maple on the wings.
15. Hey guys, I put a Maple/Maple neck on my MIM jazz and I want to get a headstock decal for it, to look like the original MIM one if possible. Does anybody know where I can get one of these? I can only seem to find people who do the Vintage fender ones and not the boring old MIM ones. Also, it's a stain finish neck, will I need to sand it down and respray it with Nitro after applying? Cheers!
16. Bump. P/x for more grass also considered
17. Jon did some fret/setup work on my electric guitar and now it plays amazingly plus he was exceptionally helpful for such a small job, so nothing but praise from me too! One day I'll own one of his basses.....
18. Basses: Sadowsky Modern 5 string, Bongo 5HH in White, my Green Spector but with higher grade quilted maple wings. Either that or I'd have a few Ritters because they're worth the most. But that's like asking a genie for unlimited wishes isn't it? Amps: Old SVT, Mesa 400+, Warwick Hellborg preamp+poweramp Cabs: That huge Ampeg from NAMM (I'd like to see unlimited roadies manage with that one!), The biggest Mesa cab I can find to go with the 400+, Matching Warwick cabs to go with the Hellborg Effects: REDDI, a nice compressor and a Boss GT10B/Pod X3 live (Because I'm simple like that )
19. Schism is one of those pretentious prog riffs that insists on changing time signature every bar (like Dream Theater!) Personally I just think of it as the riff in 5/8 except a G and D are added every two bars. I hammer on both the C and the D when I play it, you might find that easier, I don't know. Another way to cheat at it would be just to follow the vocal line, or at least remember what it goes like in your head that way you shouldn't forget the rhythm. Most of the words coincide with the notes on the G string.
20. I've received a couple of trade offers but nothings exactly what I'm looking for. BUMP!
21. He recently built a guitar for a guy on another forum I go on, so maybe he's just having some problems?
22. Is it me or does this song have crazy amounts of low end? It might just be my speakers/Youtube's audio compression but it sounds a lot bassier than I remember.
23. Hey guys, I'm in the middle of planning a EUB build. I'm an electric player and I have very little experience of playing DB except for occasional noodling on other people's instruments. My aim for the build is basically to get as much of the upright sound as possible with as few of the upright ergonomics and aesthetics as possible. Obviously I imagine there will be a compromise in the sound when I do this but I'm trying to figure out how much I can change: Neck thickness - Most EUBs I've seen seem to have rather thick necks. I don't mind thick necks and I think it will affect sustain so I will try keeping the neck and headstock as thick as possible. Fingerboard radius - Does this have any significant effect on the tone? I don't play on doing any arco playing so that isn't a problem. I was thinking something like 12" because the wood I have for the fingerboard isn't very thick. Neck angle and bridge height - Again, I was under the impression that the reasoning behind this was to allow the use of a taller bridge and so the body got less in the way of the bow. So unless it affects the tone in some way I don't know about I probably won't have one. Also, it's hard to do with my limited skills and tools Scale length - This seems to be the big one. 35" was my original plan but through research I get the impression that people prefer the sound of longer scale length EUBs. I want a two octave fingerboard so given the limitations of the wood that I have I can go up to about 40". The problem that comes with this is that I don't know if I can get standard strings that long. So what are you opinions on these aspects of EUB/DB construction? Any comments/suggestions/advice? Cheers, Joe Edit/Delete Message
24. A more detailed list of what I'm looking for: Lakland - 55-01, DJ5 Warwick - Thumb, Streamer (Anything apart from a standard), Corvette (Bubinga) four or five string both OK Musicman - Anything! Status - Anything with a graphite neck Anything else interesting is also considered, like a Peavey Cirrus, Carvins, Warmoths, anything fretless etc.
