To Ou7shined....So when you bought a new 'better' instrument, you became more inspired to improve your technique,so you have to practice to improve. The instrument gave you the inspiration to improve, which i said can happen in an earlier post. To Gremlin Andy...... You say that you SPECIFICALLY ruled out my argument, but then go on to say that "given the *SAME* player, that player is UNDESPUTEDLY served better by a better instrument". This is where my argument lies.I don't think it is undisputed. The player may not necessarily be better served on a better instrument. Would Jaco have been a better player on a 'boutique' bass than on a stock Fender? No..He'd still play like Jaco. Once again,I like and own 'Boutique' basses, but I will maintain that ultimately the player is more important than the instrument.
yes but a better carpenter he/she will become with sharper tools
2.
:thu: 99.9% of the average audience don't know a bass from a guitar, and the only people who really give a damn anyhow will be other musicians looking to make themselves feel better by doing down your choice of gear...
yes your right, but thats not the point... I dont buy expensive instruments for the audience..( and i think i can speak for some others) i like to play higher end basses for me, and the way they feel and sound when i play them...i can get a much better tone (that I, like to hear) out of a higher end bass from the sum of the parts.. it spurs me on to play better, when there is a fantastic tone coming from the instrument.. And ive never come across any musicians/bassist's who put down others gear to make themselves feel better...
3. Is this a keeper then rich? You sure now? ^_^
4. Also called open mic nights,,Can be a little daunting at first...but its the best way to learn how to improvise...im going to an open mic night with lots of jazz musicians..cant wait because i will learn so much from more advanced musicians.. It really is playing on the fly..
5. Not sure but ive heard he spent a huge amount on the album...maybe he wanted there different styles for different tracks...he had an obbsessive attention to detail..
6. Oh my word. i love this bass..PM'd
7.
What about "Midnight at the oasis"? original or "heavies" cover ohh..... and (with some interesting solos here and there) "Apparently nothing" by.....err....er....sorry but, was that by the brand new heavies as well? Im not sure Isley brothers "summer breeze" would be nice too
Young Disiples

9.
whole lot o rosie, AC/DC,
In a Sambaa groove i was thinking...Brand New heavies is a good is a good idea..!!!
10. Hey people..i have formed a band recently..we play originals that myself, and John the organist write... plus a few covers..Lorna the singer has suggested some tracks that she would like to sing..some being some classics like Vaughn de Williams . be thankfull Bobby Womack . Daylight omar . theres nothing like this Creep . Stevie Wonder (done in a latin feel) not sure how this is going to work Gershwin's. Summertime (in a very soulfull funky feel) We have a saxophonist, and flute player, an awsome rythm guitarist, a super man jazz drummer, an amazing woman vocalist from Bristol, trying to get a percussionist and Trumpet man/woman.. the covers i want to do are.. Incognito..Colibri Candi Staton..little Taste of love Gwen Mcrae...Keep the fires burning..Awsome disco funk SOS band...Groovin apart from the not so well known suggestion from Lorna, im not sure if my suggestion are even more obscure, and may not be known by the crowd? Ive made sure that the songs ive put forward are very well done, groove wise, and super tight... i would never let them be played if they were not in the pocket....and the musicians love playing tthem and it shows I chose these because they are very upbeat, and it makes ME move.. do you think they may be a little unknown..i guess it depends on the crowd..we have advertised as Jazzfunk groove soul..but people like to hear recognised tunes.. Can you suggest anything i hadnt thoght of? I would like to hear your thoughts..
11. I prob wouldnt let anyone paint my scratchplate Dont listen to them though..if you like it more power to you..its how you play it though not how it looks
12.
or F#
Why F sharp..is this song not based around minor chords..so should be a flat...is my lack of theory knowledge showing?
13. yes thats why i play them..
14. What is your method for finding the Key of a song you are covering?..im havng a bit of a mental block.. What key do you think this tune is in..i think its in G flat... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDTXljIqxRE
15. Some may have read, i was upgrading my CS Jazz..I went to Bass Direct a bought some Nordstrand NJ4SE's and a Creation Audio 'Redeemer active cicuit.. Installed them yesterday (with NO routinginvolved )and put some DR Fat beams on it...Now im not one for over exaggerating things, but i sxxt you not, i just can not believe how good this bass now sounds!! I cant imagine any other jazz bass to sound as good as this does...The combo of the Nordys and the active circuit has just lifted the natural tone of it into something very special.. The clarity is just superb and really really punchy with a lovely warmth and the attack is awsome....i can play a note and it will sustain for over a minute!!..harmonics just ring and ring...the great thing is it still sounds exactly like my jazz bass but just way better..no brittleness or harshness, just smooth crisp tone..(i guess this may be somewhat due to the Nordy's..it seems to have tuned it from a semi clumsy sounding to, into super precise.. the active circuit is marvelous and lets you still retain the same sound with zero colouring..it just seems bring the best out of every aspect of the tone, right the way up the fretboard..Those with bad technique beware, it will show.. this was all through a Beyringer 90 watt amp!!!..god know how good it will be through the Aguilar.. I highly recommend this combo if you want to upgrade your jazz or any other passive bass..i was having doubts as to mess around with the bass, but now im so glad i did... Thanks for tip Mark!!
16.
Just out of interest how do you know for sure that changing the pups will improve the tone of the bass? It's all hypothetical/debatable but surely what you are hearing is the inherent tone of the bass and the pups are simply amplifying that; I wouldn't have thought the pups on a bass like a CS Ltd Ed CC would have been shabby. If you don't like the sound you are hearing it could equally be some other aspect of the bass... Yes/No?
Yes ..IMO.. the Nordy's are a way better pickup, and they are split coil, so Zero hum.....The instrument can perform way better, it just need a better microphone...It's all hypothetical/debatable but quote..surely what you are hearing is the inherent tone of the bass and the pups are simply amplifying that;...quote yes thats true but how well are they doing the job
17. WOW i love these basses...and what a bargain!!!!!
18. Ha ha, no worries Mark..havent put hem in yet..i will let you know how i got on
19.
TBH, I expect this was just a joke comment when talking to someone about a product he doesn't stock, rather than some attempt to diss a very well known, quality brand such as Aguilar. Really don't think thats his style
everyone has there opinion on ampflication..Mark knows his stuff and obviously likes Markbass and Bergantino....i dont think fo a secong aguilar is the 'Ford' of the bass world but its just an opinion..i love the sound of Aguilar gear...beauty is in the eye of the beholder..
20. im not sure if my wallet knows it yet, but Nordstrand may have it under arrest..i LOVE that bass.not sure if it beats my Sei though...different animal maybe..
21. can you play efficiently Wayne? i think they look lovely on but i havent got used to fingerstyle then switching to slap with it on..
22.
I've sent a message to our site Admin, phatmonkey, so he should be in touch with you shortly! Danny
thanks Danny..
23. Went to Bass Direct today to pick up my bits for my jazz bass..i walked in the place and was in bass heaven!!! for anyone who has been there you know what i mean...the first thing i clocked was a Nordstrand VJ4 with a Champhor top..plugged it in and it just blew me away..amazingly light...it was like 7 ibs!!!??? incredible tone.. The place is wall to wall bass...and im not talking off the shelf basses..these are all made to order instruments...you have all seen Marks site.. Beautiful instrument.. Next was an Esh Sovereign 5 with a poplar burl top...Just WoW.. the B string was awsome..for the money this bass i up there with the best.. I wanted to try all of the basses, especially the £5000 Spector, but Mark was trying to show my dim brain how to solder the Nordstrand pups to my Jazz pots.. I was a bit worried when Mark said my Aguilar gear was the 'Ford' of the bass amplification world, but i was drooling over the Markbass and Bergantino i was playing through...they sounded superb.. if i could have i would have stayed all day and played the Skjold's, Roscoes, Mayones's..and that trulley amazing Dingwall super J5..in the flesh that bass is something to behold!!! Mark is a lovely bloke with so much knowledge..i could have listened to his bass knowledge all day but he may not have the patience for someone who waffles on like me.. Bass Direct is the best bass shop in the UK, not expensive, lovely man who runs it, great service...the best basses in the world.. i think its great that Mark introduces basses like Clover, Esh, that not many of us have heard of into the UK..it gives these amazing builders a chance to make a mark thanks Mark..i will let you know when i cant remember how to solder the Redeemer.
