I bought my wife a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster for Christmas and I am in love with it, so much so that I want to get a bass to compliment it. I have very strong GAS for a Fender 51 Reissue, but the only stumbling point is that it is says Fender on the headstock and I wish it said Squier. This is the first time I have experienced this emotion. Don't get me wrong, I much prefer the look of the Fender 51 to the Squier 50s P, but I prefer the Squier brand. Is this weird or has does anyone else feel like this?
No there is nothing weird with that...Squire owners can hold there heads high, they are great basses...ive played a MEX, MIJ, USA jazzez and there isnt that much difference in tone to the Squire....Not sure what pups are in Squires but they do a good job...Put some Lindy Fralins in one an your in business.. i do think the name has a little way to go mind...what is really cool (i think) is a great player funking on a Squire..really cool

thats cool if hes a friend, but what does he mean by the bridge need resetting? does he mean intonation, or saddle adjustments?

I play both and cant really understand why people go to 5 strings and dont or cant go back to 4....i play both bcause my 4 and 5 have different tones that i use.. the only drawbacks can be a slightly wider neck..someone said a 5 is a different instrument?? its an electric bass with an added B string..thats it...the advantages are you have lower note frequencies and you can move around easier without making big jumps.. i think some who want to play a 5 overthink it...get to know all the notes on the string, and get used to the wider neck...its a little alien at first but you get used to it...after a while a 4 stringer will look very simple.. practise practise practise...6, 7, strings next hey!!!

Yamaha TRB5 replacement preamp suggestions?
bubinga5 replied to JamieBenzies's topic in Bass Guitars
Hello everyone, I am on the hunt for a new preamp for my Yamaha TRB5 fretless after deciding through various reviews and forums that the pickups are less of a problem then then pre. So far I have had a look at the U-Retro 5 Knob Deluxe by John East and that seems fairly promising with the whole tonal variation incl/the active passive functions. It's also convenient as it has the same amount of tone knobs as the TRB. Does anyone own one of his preamps and know how good it is? Any other suggestions? Thanks Jamie
Yes i have the U Retro in my Sei jazz....tis very good..very comprehensive...sounds awsome coupled with the Bartolinis in it.. -

Pete great thread..my fav in fact.. these for me are the best of my best..my bread and butter my dream woman!! this is the best funk ive ever heard..i mean ever ever.. super cool this sh*t..doesnt get any better than Maceo and his band IMHO!!!! check out the horn section... Wonderful this, i love this funky jazzy version of this tune.."those test tubes and the scales, get them all out of here".Tom Barney is sooooo cool in this clip..holds down the groove to perfection.. This really isnt for the OP..i really think this is one of the groove masterpieces.. I love Larry Carlton's playing on this..he a true master..dont get me started on Chuck's groove....hes got patience that man....there is not many days that go by when i dont listen to this tune..my sister is a Steely Dan nut because of this song...love it.. Michael M has wonderfull close harmonies on this song There is a way that that Stevie plays that Clav that sounds so much better than the original...pure groove. groove doesnt come much better than this.. I love these 2...this band has become such an integral part of why i play bass.as im sure it has alot of you........but strangley i love Niles's guitar playing in this..just perfect.. This is my go to Chic song....just the best that they did IMO...wonderfull bass playing , the best disco ever made... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLAxeBa6oA8
Yeah, fair point - the Yam could make a good mods project, a good quality base to start from, like a Swindon built Honda You may have to do some woodwork to get the pickups of your choice to fit...
