1. Why did you buy a five string in the first place? If it's because the sort of music you like & want to play requires the use of one then stick with it.
 2. IMO they are the best bass pickup you can get.
 3.
If there's anyone in the know I'd be interested in Deep Purple's 'Made In Japan' album. It's pretty much a classic of its genre and I don't think much of it was fixed in the studio. It took them until a rematser years later to fix the fact that Blackmore was put onto the 'wrong' side of the stereo mix so I doubt they tinkered too much with it at the time. Some of the tracks on that album are for me the definitive versions (Smoke, Strange Kind Of Woman) over the studio versions.
The main thing that has been revealed about "Made in Japan" is that it wasn't recorded in Japan.
 4.
I'm very interested as to what the electrics on this bass do,as it loks similarly made to a B.C.Rich,Grover Titans,Badass, twin P's,lots of switches etc
Lorne, The Atilla guitars & basses had a volume & tone knob for each pickup, a coil tap for each pickup & an out-of-phase switch which works when both pickups are selected. It's basically the same set up as a BC rich circuit minus the preamp & the Varitone. My old Odyssey bass (the one at the start of this thread) sounded quite similar to the late 70s rich basses I've played. The build quality was comparable too.
 5.
As im taking pics of all my bits bobs odds n ends Thought i should get a pic of my Voyager up Headless and aluminium allmost fit for Dusty Hill ! Enormous player capable of very low action Meaty tappable schaller double J pickup and phenolic fingerboard and oh chunky profile neck too Had this since the Romans came my way and its only ever been transported in a bin bag ( doh ) Currently strung as a tenor bass but normally with 30 -90 Gary v8 Kramer lover
Did you buy that from "Livewire" in Cardiff by any chance?
 6.
Odyssey Bass Pics. At last I have managed to get some shots. I think this is about 30 years old. One of my favourites! Sound great!! Also shown with a couple of friends! Flat Eric
That's a nice one - looks like it's in superb condition. They're great basses.
 7. Buy a polish impregnated jewellers cloth & buff 'em up with that - they'll clean up a treat & with no mess. A more labour intensive method (if your frets are REALLY sh*tty) is to use fine wire wool, but you'll have to mask off the fingerboard between the frets & be careful that no bits of wire wool get into you pickup magnets.
 8.
I think an un-improved live album would be pants. You just can't record atmosphere.
I completely agree. Would you REALLY want an album to sound like it was recorded at the back of Wembley Arena or the NEC? An unimproved live album would just sound like 99% of bootlegs - absolute sh*te.
 9.
Or Rush's Exit Stage left, which the band refer to as "live-ish". Jon.
I'm surprised at that, mainly because the sound quality of that album is bloody awful. Alex Lifeson's guitar is so deeply buried in the mix he may as well not be on there.
 10.
Paul left Gary's band in 1981 Pino played on Music For Chameleons which is from 1982. Paul died in 1984 In my opinion Paul's best work was Gary's Telekon album from 1980
Thanks for the correction - I must read the Numan biography again! I been a fan of Pauls playing since hearing the first Tubeway Army album when I was in school. I've got tickets for the upcoming "Pleasure Principle" gigs - such a shame that Paul isn't around to play them.
 11.
I always thought that tune was Pino Palladino.
Paul Gardiner had died of a heroin overdose before "Music for Chameleons" was recorded. It is Pino on that track.
 12.
I wouldn't put Mick Karn as underrated, I thought everyone thought he was brilliant :-)
I don't - I've always thought his fretless playing is atrociously out of tune. He gets away with it though because he's all arty & "Avant garde", the ponce. Yet another vote for the awesome Barry Adamson from me, and another player I would like to add to the list is Paul Gardiner from Tubeway Army.
 13. Thomas Dolby wrote & produced that.
 14. I played bass on some stuff that John Peel played on his show in the mid 90's.
 15. He'll regret taking that gig when he finds that she's sold all his Foderas to buy crack.
You mean to say you've not heard of Matt Garrison? No, me neither!
Of course you've heard of him - he used to be the teacher on "Southpark"
 16.
Weighs a ton, probably something to do with the 5 PP3's it has inside it to run 2 x 18v preamps and the lights on the top of the neck.
Do Alembics not come with the phantom powering module anymore then? 5 batteries is a bit silly.
 17. Going by the title I thought this was going to be a thread about erectile dysfunction.......
 18.
Eeeuck! Is that really a bass in spalted pink dapple? I'm sorry, we obviously don't share the same taste in basses.
There's no spalting on that bass at all, it's quilted maple. As for the colour I think you'll probably find it's a natural finish & there's a colour cast on the photo.
 19. Just a quickie - does anyone know if a Zon Legacy will fit a Hiscox Liteflite bass case? I've compared the measurements on the Hiscox website & it could be a tight squeeze, but there's no shop in Cardiff that has one in stock so I can try it. I'd basically have to commit to buy one without knowing if it will fit which I don't want to do. They do a larger bass case but that will be much too big. Cheers.
 20.
Melissa Auf der Maur brushed by me in a corridor.......
You LUCKY bastard!
 21.
Anacrusis? Is that a disease?
It sounds like the name of a Progressive Metal band.
 22. I got up & played guitar with Todd Rundgren at a gig in the Kentish Town & Country Club in 1995. As I was strapping on the guitar I said "what key are we in Todd?" He replied with the key & I started playing. After a few notes it was pretty obvious that I'd misheard what his reply to my question was as I was nowhere even close to the notes I should have been playing. I fumbled around the neck until I found a note that sounded OK & carried on with a not very good but at least in key solo, all the while being filmed by Todd with a handheld camera that projected my awful attempts onto some video screens. If that wasn't embarrassing enough the gig was released as a commercial video, so I have my awful solo captured for posterity on film...... I still get a kick out of the fact I played on stage with Todd though.
 23. Somebody jump on this!! A superb bass for a great price - anyone looking for a great fretless will love it. I've got a Zon fretless & it's fantastic.
 24.
This thread is starting to morph into a cross between 2 old favourites... the age old anti/pro-covers band saga, and the "everything I like is great and everything else is sh!t" chestnut...
I don't think anything "Anti-covers" has been said; I was merely commenting on an observation I've made on the forum where a percentage of people playing in covers bands don't seem to enjoy playing a lot of the material they do. To me that seems strange, but if some people enjoy the interaction and reaction of an audience enough to compensate for playing songs they may not like then fair enough. Getting a great reaction from a crowd is one of the best feelings I've ever experienced.
