1. When I joined the forum in March this year I was at a make or break point with my bass playing. I'd been a bass player for 30 years but hadn't really touched it for 10 of them, concentrating more on learning to play guitar & keyboards. I came across the forum by accident while searching for some bass related topic & decided to sign up & see if my interest in bass would be rekindled or whether it would prove to me once and for all that it was time to sell the gear & give up playing altogether. Fast forward to 31st December and I'm the incredibly proud owner of another Zon, have joined a band for the first time in years due to contacts made on the forum (thanks Matt!), and am also about to go into the studio to record a bunch of songs with another old muso friend who contacted me last week. Most importantly I am enjoying my playing in a way that I honestly never thought I would again, which is just such a great feeling. I honestly think that I would have sold all my bass gear by now if I hadn't discovered the wealth of knowledge & the genuinely fantastic bunch of people who make this forum such a useful & valuable resource, as well as just a great place to spend some time (probably too much time actually!). Thanks for breathing new life into this old bastard - I really appreciate it. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL.
2.
You'll get all the answers you need here.
And plenty you don't need...... Welcome!
3. Lovely!
4.
On page 73 of the January BGM there is an article about "Luna Guitars" and this special PBass 'copy' they have produced for Paz Lenchantin.
Paz Lenchantin gives me the horn. Merry Christmas.
5. F***ing hell! Progtastic!! (With a herniated lumbar disc I wouldn't even dare pick this up!).
6. It might be worth you looking at Hiscox cases as one of their selling points is their great insulation properties.
7.
We did our first gig last night and to my horror I noticed that under dim stage lighting the black lines where the frets used to be on the dark brown board become invisible!
I think you'll find this is why 99% of lined fretless basses have the fret lines in a lighter colour than the fingerboard.
8. Beautiful!
9.
I strongly suspect that the problem is with poplar ply. The first company to build poplar ply cabinets (in the late eighties) was Hughes and Kettner. It is interesting to note that they didn't produce any of their 'Lightline' cabs with a rating higher than 100 watts. And they don't use poplar ply anymore.
So poplar has turned out to be to be unpoplar then......................
10. As we're posting pictures of guitars, here's my 1982 Hamer Special: I had an absolutely superb 1995 Hamer Standard (explorer shape) too but I sold that to fund my last Zon purchase.
11.
Remember you can get a "proper" bass synth like a Novation Bass Station for ~£150. OR you could get a synth with a built-in USB audio interface like an X-Station or a Xiosynth.
+1 Don't f*** about with software synths - buy a proper one!
12. You haven't heard of Mo Foster? Blimey.............
13. The other thing to take into account is that if you buy from an American store & have it shipped over here any warranty offered will probably not be valid in the UK.
14. My two Zon Legacy Elites, 1 fretted, 1 fretless:
15. I'm more than happy to play bass parts on a synth. To be honest I'd prefer to hear a synth doing it for anything lower than bottom E - I think it sounds much better than any 5 string bass.
16. Rick Neilson also played on Double Fantasy, along with Tony Levin. Cheap trick sometimes play a version of "I'm losing you" in their live set - there's a great version of it on the "Silver" double live CD.
17. So, judging by everybodies comments above, using a 300 watt head with this cab would be a waste of time, yes?
18.
I'm disappointed I must say... thought this thread was going to be about the most effective method of wrestling a skinny-stringer to the floor...
Same here. I was going to suggest a pool cue across the knees & then CS gas (or chloroform if you're old fashioned like me).
19.
Hi Shockwave, Thanks for your comments , but in my mind I thought it better to refinish a cheap BC Rich to make it look the way I NEED it to look than to B*STARDISE a lovely expensive through neck model. Don't you think this makes sense? Why would you refinish something that looks like this? http://www.giggear.co.uk/p/BC-Rich-Mocking...e-Classic-Bass/ Surely that would be sacrilegious? Once again thanking you for your continued support. Shippo
The one you've attached a link to isn't "a lovely expensive neck through model", it's just one of the import lines. As such I'd have no qualms about hacking it to bits. Refinishing a 70s Short horn Mockingbird - now THAT would be sacrilegious!
20. If you just want strings use should use Stringbusters or Strings Direct. They'll probably be cheaper & they both deliver really quickly. They're also really on the ball with having stock marked as available or not. GAK have got a bloody terrible reputation for not having things in stock when they're advertised as available on their website.
21. This is getting to be a very familiar story........ My old Trace Elliott AH150 head went dead mid gig - no dramatic bangs or smoke, just cut out. Luckily I was DI'd as well so I just got a bit more bass put through my monitor & carried on. God I hated that amp (even before that happened).
22. Gibson also polish all their guitars with panda skins, the bastards. (BTW-This isn't actually true).
23. There's only one Christmas song that doesn't make me want to spew my ribcage up, and that's the Waitresses one.
24.
Thanks mate!!! So glad you enjoyed it.... you may have noticed I played some.... errr....'interesting' notes when my eyes were being diverted elsewhere by the dancers during 'Modern Day Delilah'! lol!!!
I thought you all did remarkably well considering the on-stage distractions during that song. "Ace" was a total pro dealing with the various gremlins he had to contend with that evening as well. Sorry I couldn't stick around to say hello - I had to be up for work at 4.30 the following morning. Monster bass sound as well!
25. What a fantastic night! Dressed to Kill were absolutely f***ing superb! Great "support act" too........
