Dingwall D-Roc 5 / Yamaha RBX6JM
-
I have 4 basses that could 'do it all', but I like that there are differences between them that allow me to choose a different tone/feel/appearance depending on my mood.

Sorry who are you again?

So after a few months with the Euro 4, I decided I would actually be happier with a Euro 5 that looks the same. My (new) band requires a 5 but really liked the feel and sound of the Euro 4. In the meantime, I actually bought a Dingwall D-Roc 5 and was going to just trade in the Euro to balance the books. This was an eBay purchase, but it was very very close to BassDirect and the journey killed 2 birds with one stone. This is a 2007 model and the TonePump (pre trim pot) was a bit of a surprise compared to the newer model I had before. It's manageable with delicate volume control use however, and does what I wanted for that sound. I managed to break a pot expanding the shaft, but a new one is on the way. It has a couple of minor dings but all very good for 15 years old. Truss rod was slack and action high, but all sorted easily. So that's 2 unplanned basses in the last 2 weeks 😳.

Good for what ? Lots of choice but if you tell us what type of sound you want, appearances etc - we can narrow that down.

I can see some people would get some mileage out of the extra functionality, the touchscreen is cool but obviously has a big whack on the price. I'm happy with tactile controls and a single colour basic display but I guess this is where the market is heading.

My experience with this is when the string is slightly twisted. Release the tension a bit then pushed it back from the bridge - it may rotate to it's preferred position, then tighten back up.

I quickly checked one out at the Liverpool show. Went through the patches as I didn't want to delve into the menus. My take on it was that my B3n does 90% of what the B6 does, and was 25% of the cost.

Sense of community through online networking
Machines replied to Saskia's topic in General Discussion
I've been a member of Basschat and it's predecessor since ~2005 as well as an admin until 2013. I've made friends here and have attended many meetups both at bashes and shows. I also contact other players through Facebook and Instagram, the latter of which is very good for reaching out to those you don't have common contacts with already. -
Lobster discovers Fender / Gretsch are telling porkies about spec

Ok if that was the bit where he waves his stupid claw about to reveal anything I always skip that. But in that case - yes it's legal, but definitely bad faith. Seems like a very low return short cut from Fender. -

I watched this the other day - there's definitely some sensationalism there. Unless he's checked several of them - it could just have been someone in the factory not doing their job properly that day. -
There are replacement switches available if you really wanted, but for me it all happens with the 'all on' setting. Combustion switch D-Roc switch

I think you've kind of answered that yourself.

And it made it out the house last night. No surprises, it sounded great even through this knackered old Ashdown. It was the first proper opportunity to play it on a strap though, and headstock dive was absent and it was very comfortable throughout.

Satin finishes. They seem to be fashionable in the last few years, but to me they look incomplete, as well as having terrible wear patterns very quickly.

Some quick sound demos. All recordings are into a Zoom B3n with pickups in following order. 1) Bridge 2) Bridge / Middle (Parallel) 3) Middle 4) Bridge/Middle (Parallel) + Neck in Series Fingerstyle (Clean signal): Dingwall_DRoc_5_Fingerstyle.mp3 Slap (Treble boost on Zoom): Dingwall_DRoc_5_Slap.mp3 METAL (Darkglass Model): Dingwall_DRoc_5_Metal_Style.mp3

The RedSub Coliseum was always a budget experiment for me, sounded OK but the ergonomics and feel were really quite bad. The D-Roc was actually designed properly and balances very well. I'm rehearsing with it tonight so will let you know once I work out how these straplocks work 😂

I'll try and do some sound demos today if I can find my interface. EDIT: Found it

Last weekend was the Bass & Guitar show in Liverpool. I had the opportunity to be on the Bass Direct stand for the weekend helping with product demos and made a couple of bass sales (Cort A5 Plus SC & Kala U-Bass). It is well documented in other threads that the weekend was fairly quiet, which gave me the opportunity to try out most of the instruments I liked the look of with no limitations. The most popular basses were without a doubt the Dingwalls, a good mixture of those who had never played a fanned fret before - and some who are diehard Dingwall fans. Lots of people went for the D-Roc 5 to try out - it was moderately priced (for a Dingwall !), and had a stunning aquamarine flake finish. It was definitely the most popular instrument I saw being demo'd and was with me too. As a passive instrument, I expected it to sound a bit dull compared to the NG/Combustions, but it did not. It was mostly plugged into a GR Bass head and 2x12 carbon fibre cab. It was without a doubt the most thunderous yet clear bass sound i've heard to date. The pickup switching was very good and there isn't a bad sound available from it. Every time someone tried it out I was hoping they'd put it back, because otherwise I couldn't have it. We got to the end of Sunday and it had survived, so I agreed a sale whilst we were packing up and took it home that day. The only downside, is that I will have to lose 1-2 basses to fund it, but i'll get over that quite quickly. And here it is just before the show opened - I hadn't played it yet nor considered buying it.. should have got Sheldon to sign it but in the fluster of packing up I didn't think of it (i'm 2nd from left).

Imagine spending 2 hours sat next to him discussing life philosophy over a curry. Yeah that happened to me 😀.
