So if you need full chromatic tuning you might have to look elsewhere... On the question of power, the MIDI pickup cable supplies +7V and -7V on pins 12 and 13 acording to this page so you might be able to tap something off that.
The GK standard does provide +-7VDC yes. But if you're already hooked up to a device like the Roland GR-20 or the Axon, you might as well use the tuner thats built into that.

More than 4?

I didn't bother to read the entire load of discussion in this thread, I only read the first and last pages...... anyway. When I play my 9-string with the gospel choir, I mostly stay on the bottom 6 strings. That low F# string is very useful for gospel, mainly because so many songs are in the key of Bb. And the gospel style loves the sub-low notes! But when I play it at home, I mostly experiment with chords and melodies in the upper register. Sweet sound, perhaps guitar-like but that's all right, and I'm still learning how to apply the added range to various musical situations...
3. Well you know, there's always the Roland V-Bass system, which is quite like the VG system, only it is in a floor unit and with lots more options and possibilities. I use one. It is utterly fantastic. But it is true - one does not always need all that stuff. If you do need it though, IMO the V-Bass is the way to go. You can do pretty much anything, really: change bass, change tuning, change amp and effects all on the go, just by stepping on a pedal.
4. ABM has closed? Their web site does not say anything about it. But you may try ETS Hardware then. They make headless things. And it should be good - you'll find ETS on expensive stuff like Ritter, Drozd and Marleaux. Don't be fooled by the "short delivery times" claim though - I am still waiting for the bridge for my fretless warmoth 4-string, ordered in July.
5.
has anyone read this months issue of bass guitar magazine the punk issue... the ten string issue in it is pretty cool... the thing is massive... one question struck me as i read it WHY??
Probably qualifies as a FAQ. 7. I put together a four-string of warmoth parts last year, it turned out very well. You can see and hear it here. It has an ash jazz body with flame maple top, and a purpleheart neck with ziricote fingerboard. EMG pickups and Gotoh hardware. Sounds excellent and plays wonderfully, if I may say so myself. And I have recently started a fretless four string project too, with a one-piece bubinga G4 body and bubinga neck with satine fingerboard. See photos here. So I would say Warmoth is good, very good. Not very cheap, but good.
8. That's right. Magnets will lose their strength after a while (a long while). You could possibly have them re-magnetized somehow. Or you could just stick new pickups into the bass.
9.
As for a standalone recorder, one I thought of is the Zoom H4. It can do 4-track recording on board, with basic FX (incl amp models), mixdown and overdubbing, and you can transfer tracks to computer to finish them. Oh, and they include another program (Cubase LE) to try.
I would recommend the Zoom H4. I have one myself which I have used a lot already, it is very easy to get things done with minimal stuff. I plug my bass directly in, or record the drums with the built-in stereo microphone, and although I can do a decent mix inside the H4 I usually transfer the lot to the computer and mix it in Cubase. Works like a charm. Cheap too. Also I've recorded entire concerts directly to mp3, sounds great!
10. May I link to my own pictorial soldering guide? Silly question I know. It is important to have a clean soldering iron, and clean parts. I use Multicore Crystal 400 solder, and an Ersa soldering station (with electronic temerature regulation). But the "secret" is the skill, you know.
11. It sure looks like the Gotoh 206 model. Here at Warmoth: http://www.warmoth.com/hardware/bridges/br...idges_gotoh_206
12. Yes, that's silly. Perhaps you should tell DigiDesign about it - complain basically?
13. The school has a huge Carlsbro combo, with a folded horn speaker thing. It's probably 1,2 meters high. Sounds big, too.
14.
Model Recurve single cut Fretless • Fingerboard spalted maple
Spalted Maple fretless fingerboard? Are you sure that's a good idea? As far as I have understood it, spalted maple is rotten maple, and won't hold together - it'll turn to dust if you breathe on it. Will it be treated with some magic chemical stuff?
15.
The Soul model from Basslabs is a carbon fibre J-style bass that comes in at 5.5 lbs. I've not tried one, and they look expensive, but if you're seriously thinking about getting one, they can send you one of their stock models to look at as their distribution is limited as I understand it. http://www.basslab.de/
I've tried a five-string STD model, and it quite simply rocks. It's amazingly ergonomic - I could hardly feel that I had it strapped on, and it stays automagically in the most comfortable playing position. Very easy to play, and great sound. You could easily have one made with a MM pickup too, if you prefer. Or whatever else you might fancy - I was told that they're all custom made, and small changes like that hardly cost anything at all. You might not like how it looks though. I don't, really. But I still hope to own one someday.

DIY bass

I had much fun and good results from Warmoth parts. I put together a 4-string about a year and a half ago. Check it out. Very good quality stuff, fantastic looking woods. The specs for mine are ash body with flame maple top, purpleheart neck with ziricote fingerboard and headstock cap. Gotoh hardware, EMG pickups. I'm planning another Warmoth project these days, it'll be Bubinga neck and body, fretless 4-string.....
17. Here's a quote fitting to the occation from the recent Ritter newsletter.
The News July 2007: 1. Illegal Ritter Copies At eBay they sell basses looking like my Roya, Okon and Jupiter Designs. These are all illegal knockoffs in bad quality. I don't cooperate with other producers and I don't sell my designs to mass production companies! I would also like to point out that the smear campaign starting last December throughout Germany about Daniel and me not building our instruments by ourselves is a downright lie. I assure you that all Ritter Basses are handmade by Daniel and me as you can always have a look at visiting my workshop.
Looks like a cheap knock-off. The text says "This is a Very High Quality Professional Custom made 4 String Electric Bass Guitar, Black in Brand New Condition. This Guitar is All Hand-Craft work and provides Highest Quality Song." which smells a bit fishy, as the Galveston guitar says pretty much the same: "This is a Very High Quality DeluxeTravel Electric Guitar Black w/ Gig Bag in Brand New Condition. This Guitar is All Hand-Craft work and provides Highest Quality Song."
18. I assume you mean Jens Ritter's SwordSteel strings. I used them on my Listerud 7-string and I liked them a lot. Easy on the fingers compared to regular SS strings, and a nice sound that sounded fresh for a long time. They didn't feel dead at all when I sold the bass. A tad bit expensive though.
19. eh? Anyway. I haven't tried one, but I recon that if it's good enough for John Myung it ought to be good enought for me.
20. It's absolutely gorgeous! And EMG35-J pickups seems like an excellent choice.
21. +1 For me it has been difficult to get used to the idea of not having the emphasis on the 1.... or, to put it another way, to count the 1 but not play it. My drummer friend is very much into a lot of those different latin rythms, and so I had to learn some as well. Very interesting and facinating. It feels as if the whole rythm is rushing forward with unstoppable momentum... far from the laid-back soul style that I've also tried (and probably failed) to learn.
22. I've got a couple. Here is one that is essentially a flight case with velcro on the inside bottom and pedals stuck in there. I built it all myself, alas the hinges on the front bottom make it hard to put the top back on..... And here is the other one - the one I currently use. It is an aluminium frame welded by a friend of mine, in a flight case made by a local PA rental company. The stuff is screwed on to the aluminium frame with stainless steel screws, and the cables are all tied to the frame as well. Very heavy, but it lets my electronic aural gratification devices survive the onslaught of tired roadies.
23. What's in my rack? My Eden WT800 amplifier. The weak link is the rack though. Must be replaced soon by a proper flight case.

CUSTOM BASS
Here's some pics of my Sei 7. This is the Sei offset flamboyant body style. The body is a walnut core, bolivar (dyed claret) veneer with a lacewood top. The thru neck is wenge and flamed maple topped with a birds eye maple 'board. Pickup is a passive custom Kent Armstrong humbucker to a volume control which is a push/pull pot for the led's on the side of the neck. The bass has a regular output, XLR and a coil tap button all on the lower edge.
I've probably said so before, but that Sei is the bomb.
