POLL! Who uses a hard case for gigs, and who uses a gig bag?
wateroftyne replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Not bad actually. The case I use has "dual-sided high density ABS plastic shell inside the case" and rediculously thick padding (which also gives a nice snug fit). When I said "decent gig bag", I didn't mean one of the £30 Warwick ones. Anyway, each to their own, and everyone has to individually assess the risks to their instrument based on their typical usage/trasportation/gigs, etc... Based on some of the above comments, I can only assume that a lot of you haven't seen or used a decent gigbag? I'm not talking about cheap "business generators", I'm talking about something that costs as much as, if not more than, a good hard case. I've owned cheap hard cases that I wouldn't trust to protect a bass as well as the gigbag I'm currently using.
I used to use a couple of these: Very nice (and pricey) high-quality hard case / soft case halfway-house. After a near miss involving a sliding flight case, I shifted to the Hiscoxes. I know semi-hard cases have their place, but they're not for me. Each to their own, as you say! -
Having a custom cover made for my Promethean Combo, a simple slip over padded cover with access hole to the handle on the top. My combo is being used exclusively at all my gigs at the moment so got to get the little guy a bit of protection. If the cover turns out okay I will post some photos and details of supplier. Nothing but praise for this little amp so far Stu
Cool! I've just asked Roqsolid for a quote for a cover... I'll post here when they get back to me. I used mine at a 'proper' gig for the first time last night - my main rig is set up somewhere else. The band I was playing with isn't loud (the drummer uses a Cajon, drum and a Handsonic), but the punters were chatty and noisy so we had to crank it up a bit more than normal. The Promethean coped brilliantly. Obviously it didn't have the authority of my main rig at that kind of volume, but it wasn't lacking. It surprises me constantly...
My gigbag is smaller than a hardcase though - there's nothing to agree or disagree with about that. Maybe only slightly, but it's the difference between it being able to fit on the back seat of a Corsa or having to be squeezed down into the rear passenger foot space, if you get what I mean.
Again, it's not something that's ever occurred to me. My case fits quite happily in the boot of my Focus..
It's just my experience though. I couldn't see the point of using a hardcase after I got a good gigbag.
I do wonder how well a gigbag would cope with something falling the neck, for example...? Similarly, I wonder how many passengers on the Titianic were thinking 'Well, it hasn't sunk yet!' right up until the point it hit the iceberg. ...and immediately afterwards thought 'I wish I'd just gone to Blackpool for my holidays this year...' -
Lighter, easier to carry, generally smaller in size, etc...
I don't agree, but then I generally don't have to carry my bass very far. It's usually house > car > destination > car > house. I suppose if I had a lot of walking to do, I'd rather have it on my back. -

My Hiscox has plenty of room for bits and bobs... as well as my bass, I also fit in a tuner, cable, a kettle lead, a spare set of strings, a Markbass Bass Keeper, a Zoom H2 recorder, a multi-tool and a spare pre-amp valve. I don't think I could go back to a soft case or gig bag. -
Seven
Wrong! The answer is seven-and-a-bit. And I should know - I've got Wall-E on DVD *and* Blu-Ray.
Gig bag, but most of my "gigs" are two blocks away, so I walk.
Is Wales part of Manhattan now? Hiscox hard case all the way... -

The Moobs are from over this way, I think. I played KBF back in.. Um... 1998-ish. Jolly good fun, it was. BTW, the band who headlined on the Saturday, the Emerald Thieves, are on the lookout for a new bass player. I could fancy it myself, but I have a bit on at the mo. PM me if anyone wants more info.
I don't remember the GB models I've tried, definitely not the Streamliner tho... Would love to try one, the thing is and amp or a cab really shows it's advantages/disadvantages when gigging, in a room they all sound good .
Absolutely. Based on gigging it at least twice a week, and the Streamliner is the best amp I've owned by a long shot. It's reminded me what 'real' bass sounds like. That said, the point has been made elsewhere that this thread is just going to be a list of everyone's favourite bass amps...
So... I am open to any advice and suggestions and will appreciate everyone's opinion, especially of the ones of you that has been gigging a lot lately. Just to mention - I've tried.... Genz-Benz [snip] definitely not my thing... they all kinda sound too shallow to me.
The Genz-Benz Streamliner changes all that. It WHUMPS.

The truth is, no-one knows for sure. Probably not even Geddy. All we can do is speculate.
Don't buy any of them until you've tried some vintage Precisions. Each of the four you mention (if new, as I assume they are) will lose roughly a third of their value as you walk out of the shop, and may be down by 50% by the time you come to sell. I have yet to work out why so many people want new instruments. If it's not a Custom or something really unusual that you just have to own, then let someone else take that initial hit. Push the boat out a bit, double your budget, and you can buy something that plays & sounds at least as good as any of them, but is a jen-you-wine vintage bass and will either lose you very little or, more probably, make you a profit when it's time to sell. You can't afford a 60's bass, and late 70's basses often have issues (including, for me, excessive weight) but with a bit of shopping around you might find a decent mid 70's bass you can afford, especially if you sell/trade one or more of your existing herd to help fund it.
I've never really entertained buying new for the same reason. I've never bought a brand-new car, either. I don't want to take that hit.

Bear in mind all four will probably be set up differently... if at all. Try and keep that in mind. You'll be amazed how a set up can change a 'meh' bass into something that plays like 'buttah'.
Hi There, I tested it yesterday in rehearsal.. so here my first impressions: - The Zoom H2 a bit cheap at unpacking. The thing costs about 170Euros, I would have prefer a little less "low quality plastic feeling" - The menu / navigation are very decent, no remark here. Test in rehearsal: - Installation, getting, ready & recording control: perfect. Due to the lack of big SD card, I had to record in MP3 and I probably picked up a wrong format, the compression is extremly damaging in my case, so to check next week. However, even compressed, I've been extremly surprised to hear what's been picked up.I'm very confident about the quality once in WAV (8Gb CD on its way :-)) When I tested the device at home, I'm been positivly impressed by the micros sensitivity & the sound quality all in all : a good choice for me so far. (I wanted a qucik way to record, without wasting the rehearsal time with recording consideration, and job done!)
I agree about the casing... it does feel cheap. FWIW, I usually record at 320kbps, and I can't really hear much in the way of compression. Nothing blindingly obvious, anyway.
