1. I think as usual you have to try them but a cheap but reliable place to start is Rotosound Top Tapes. D'Addario Chromes are slightly more expensive but nowhere near the price of Pyramids or Thomastiks. Son of ET is playing Pyramids in his 'Gypsy Dub' 11-piece big band but I know he'll use Top Tapes when needed.
2.
But surely the point of those videos is that the child is exhibiting prodigious talent and/or skill on their instrument for somebody of x years - not to make direct comparisons between them and Buddy Rich...?
Except Buddy Rich was a child star, Traps the Drum Wonder, on stage from age 18 months and was among the richest child stars of his time.
3. Why not change your name to 'A Wake Til Dawn'?
4.
lol and Donny playin the bass at the same time 😃
I think it's Merrill on bass. Donny is on the keyboard.
5. Strange to say but the Osmonds are better dancers.
6. Here's another one, miming again, Ace Kefford with Slab and Roy Wood with a Bass VI ... http://youtu.be/4GHe5BPb6Yg
7.
The film Whiplash springs to mind.
I understand the connection but I enjoyed that film more than Buddy Rich ranting.
8.
... James Brown behaved in a very similar way (but it would take a lot to put me off his music)!
I saw an interview with Bootsy Collins being asked 'what was it like working for James Brown?'. Collins replied that 'It was like being in the army'.
9.
Surely I'm not the only on who has the opinion that a bass sounds better if you beat the living crap out of it.... am I?
Really? Are you serious?
10. Will you be doing the dancing? http://youtu.be/CS8ZfVTE4SM
11.
Yes!
It looks like one but does it sound like one? (I know it's miming on Top of the Pops and it may well not be what was used in the studio but ... hey ... nonetheless ... does it sound like a 66 Slab P?)
12.
I think as bassists we should strive to do it all - the right technique for the right sound - fingers, muted thumb, slap/pop, pick, tap, skip and hop.... In essence play what sounds right.
I have no interest in striving to do it all ... Nor any interest in telling other bassists how they should play.
13. Does this look like a 66 Slab Precision? http://youtu.be/kM-y1a1oeCo
14.
Perhaps that's part of it: there's an attitude among some guitarists that playing bass is something any guitarist could do, so to counter this some bass players want to emphasise that "real" bass playing isn't like that!
Maybe, but most of the guitarists I play with don't use a pick but use fingers the same as me.
15. If anyone complains about a bass player using a pick I would usually comment 'but you think it's ok to use frets'.
16.
... Ive read conflicting reports on the difference between the FL and FS sets. Some say there is little to no difference whereas some say the seemingly small difference in gauge belies the rather significant difference in tension.
I'd say the difference in gauge (FL=43-60-82-104 versus FS=45-65-85-105) belies a rather more significant difference in tension than one might expect. Also, if it matters to anyone, FL have red silks while FS have black silks
17. Tuning up a semitone (F-Bb-Eb-Ab) won't hurt your neck. But I don't at all understand why you need to do that. And really, if the guitarist can't tune faster than that, then sack him.
18. It's a non-tremolo version of a Fender Jaguar or Bass VI tailpiece. I can't see now who has them in Europe but I'm sure someone does because I almost bought one about a year ago.
19. 30" scale Bass VI needs a normal 34" scale gig bag.
20. I don't exactly know but the spec for the two on the Fender site is exactly the same except for the different product numbers.
21.
I might still consider fitting a second string tree for the D and G strings.
I did that. It does help.
22. Looks OK to me.
23. Very nice, well done.
24. Mesa 1x12 Walkabout .... no problem.
25.
... Sinatra At The Sands ...
One of my all time favourite albums.
