I'm pretty inexperienced with fretless still, and my intonation has some room for improvement... But I have the impression that when a note is not quite right, it's more tolerable if it is slightly flat than if it is slightly sharp. Anybody else? Is there a "scientific" reason? Or is it just me?
I think which note of the scale you are playing can also make a difference. For example, say you were playing a blues using a blues pentatonic scale, accuracy on the root note seems to me to matter more than accuracy on the flat third - it's as though the flat third of a blues scale is a slightly variable and expressive thing. The other possibility is that my ears are ****ed. However, +1 on Beedster's vibrato.

I sometimes play fretless with a lap steel player. Some people would say that we are sometimes sharp or flat to each other. We prefer to call it spicy.

Has anyone else heard rumours of a forthcoming Squier Mustang Bass?

Amplifing an accoustic guitar for gigs
EssentialTension replied to jezzaboy's topic in Accessories and Misc
In my 'acoustic' band the one acoustic guitar (fitted with piezo and associated pre-amp) goes straight into the PA. The second acoustic guitarist also plays ukulele and electric lap steel and has a switch box feeding them all to a Laney VC-30. Both ways work fine. -
The Mrs is getting GAS at that picture. AND hint it's not the Lakland
Tell her the cooker is not for sale!!
No doubt a Ric owner's going to come along soon and start talking toasters
Ha ha, good one.
Keep the Decade mate, you know as soon as it goes you'll miss it
That's true, especially because it is one of the very first batch of production Skyline Decades and I have good reason to believe it was the very first of or at least very early in that batch - so that's kind of sentimental value too. Still, I'd enjoy spending the money on something else. Good luck with the bitsa.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Wish I could mate (and you're not the first person to ask since I posted this thread either), but see response to Clarky above Nice cooker, have you got one of your '62 RI with the washing machine? C
No problem because I'm in two minds about selling it anyway. The trouble is I keep playing the 62 and the Decade doesn't get a look in. Sorry no washing machine pics.
You must do some magic with Google mate, that was the first pic that cam up when I searched 'Lakland Decade' Nice floor as well What with talk of kitchens and kettles, this thread is becoming a little domesticated
You're right, I just googled it too and my kitchen floor is second pic - spooky. Here's my cooker: Actually, I've been giving serious thought to selling my Decade - might you be interested?
So, these three basses are really getting under my skin at the moment. There's a common theme I think....... The Billy Bo Lakland Decade ......and the Ric Cheyenne So, as each is bloody expensive, to appease the Gods of GAS, I'm embarking on a bitsa build based on the above instruments. I'll keep y'all posted C
Hey, Chris, that's my Decade on my kitchen floor!!

So, £3900 now.

EssentialTension replied to lanark's topic in Bass Guitars
With the black flatties, white or white pearl, like this: -
He can't afford them he just spent £3,100 on a bass.
Wayne, shoegazeuk is the seller ... but maybe he didn't get as much as he hoped for.
Have you checked out John East's video on how to get the best out of the P-Retro? One of its great attractions is that it can make rounds + pick sound good to a flats + fingers player, and of course vice versa.
Sounds pretty good.
-
Looks like an excellent deal. Does it have a passive switch?

£3,100 with 18 hours to go. Still last Monday's bid in the lead.
Hola all. I have been offered a P-bass serial number mz4086717 I am having trouble dating it as there seem to be too many numbers. Can anyone help?
Have you seen the serial number yourself or could it be that it was told to you incorrectly? Mind you, at Guitar Data Project that number is recognised as Ensenada Plant, Mexico, 2004-5
That would be my guess MZ4 but it has 1 too many didgits on the end.
Oh OK, I see that now, MZ4 + 5 digits usually, yes?
... EDIT: I meant to add.... the annoying thing about these debates is that while people (including me) are shooting off their opinions, there actually will be an answer to the question. Has anybody done any actual scientific research I wonder?
Here's some research cited on Wikipedia on perfect pitch:
Genetics and absolute pitch The prevalence of absolute pitch is considerably higher among individuals with early childhood in East Asia.[40][41][42][43] While this difference might seem to be genetic in origin;[44] individuals of East Asian ancestry who are born or reared in the United States or Canada are significantly less likely to develop absolute pitch than those raised in East Asia.[43] This presents the likelihood that the difference is explained by cultural experience rather than genetic heritage. Language may be an important factor; many East Asians speak tonal languages such as Mandarin and Cantonese, while others (such as those in Japan and certain provinces of Korea) speak pitch accent languages, and the prevalence of absolute pitch may be partly explained by exposure to pitches together with meaningful musical labels very early in life.[41][42][43][45]
That will be MIM 2004 won't it?
Very true did he even play a Bass V??
I remember reading somewhere that Jamerson had a Bass V but hated it so much that he threw it across the studio saying 'Never let me play that thing again!'. [I may have invented that because my memory is not what it used to be.]

£2859!! Top bid still dates from last Monday lunchtime and keeps being pushed up by newer bids.
Does reading a book on theory count towards practice? I suppose it doesn't really does it
I'd say it might count as long as what you'd been reading then informed your practice and your understanding of that practice.
