2.
It's not like it's branded as a re-issue or anything....I think they're just taking some of the best bits of the P bass over the years and making something 'new'.....well as new as a P bass could be I guess!.... Each to their own and all that...
I think that's a fair assessment of what it is and it does look nice - but, as you say, each to their own. I certainly wouldn't refuse to play it.
3. One person's expensive may not be another's expensive. Anyway some of us might be amateurs but we might also get paid, so why not spend it on equipment?
4. Hofner 185.
5. Sorry but, for me, wrong headstock and wrong pickup.
6. Squier Bronco with a 30" scale is worth trying.
7. ... unless you don't want to put flats on in which case no. I'd be trying some Thomastik Jazz Flats. Because of the tailpiece you might need JF344 longscale rather than the medium scale JF324s. Really needs measuring.
8.
The Doors never used a bass player, all the bass parts were done on the organ but still a marvellous band nonetheless!
The Doors used many session bassists on their albums including: Larry Knechtel Douglas Lubahn Kerry Magness Leroy Vinnegar Harvey Brooks Lonnie Mack Ray Neapolitan Jerry Scheff
9.
If it's good music it's good music. I don't care what it's played on.
+1
10. Yes.
11. Pickup cover also acted as a rest for the heel of the hand when using the tugbar.
12. 'I can read a bit and I find it useful' and 'I know some theory and I wish I knew a lot more'.
13.
I had a DeArmond Starfire for a while (Korean made reissue of Guild) - I quite liked it, but in the end the short scale made it feel a bit weird to me. It had a nice woody tone to it and was nice to play. I took it on as a repair job (the fingerboard was coming away from the neck) and while I successfully repaired that with a glue injection and a good clamping in the end I sold it on as I just wasn't playing it enough....
That DeArmond Starfire with the fingerboard/neck issue was mine at one time. When it was with me it was sporting Hammon Dark Star pickups and was thunderous. I did a lot of gigs with a 60s covers band using it and enjoyed it very much. Definitely short scale though.
14.
... rare Guild M85 m1 for sale - £2500 - serial no: bb248
That serial number doesn't seem to be accounted for in Guild's lists. However, it sounds like 1969-71 period which would make it one of the last Mark Is I think.
15.
Guild or Hagstrom pups?
It's a Mark I with Hagstroms but the bridge pickup has been replaced with a Guild humbucker. Sale thread is here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=136547
16. PM sent.
17.
It's a mark one then!! EXACTLY like the first pic.
Well, exact except for the replaced pickup.
18.
is he singing his opinion of Fenders??
I couldn't figure that one out either.
19. Thick bodied Mark I with Hagstrom Bisonic single-coils and master volume: The Mark II has a thinner body than the Mark I: Sheryl Crow with Mark II - Guild Humbuckers and no master volume: As hinted at already, I think you'll want more pics in your ad (especially at that price). Where are you based?
20. I'm no expert here, but the more I look at it, the more it looks like a MkI with a replacement pickup in the bridge. I don't think MkIIs had the master volume control on the lower horn, did they? Is the body hollow?
21. Out of my price range I'm afraid but interesting to see one of these for sale at all and interesting to see that it has one Hagstrom Bisonic single-coil pickup (MkI) and one Guild humbucker (MkII).
22.
Fair enough! I hate messing with amps, hence my main rig has essentially no EQ and just a volume knob. And it's totally clean however you set that. But with a 2 or 3 band EQ, how hard is it to turn the bass knob up if it sounds thin, down if it sounds boomy, turn the treble knob up if it sounds dull, down if it sounds too bright, and turn the mids up if it sounds too mellow, down if it sounds too aggressive? It isn't exactly rocket science and could mean there are a lot more amps to choose from, not just the few whose default curve happens to suit you, your bass and your cab.
I do turn things up or down if I feel I need to and I don't need a lot more amps to choose from.
23.
But what is flat?
Without having to spend time messing with it, with the knobs in the middle position. (I know that's not the physics answer but it's what I meant, and what I do)
24. Flat - then adjust for the room I'm in if necessary. If an amp doesn't sound good flat then I wouldn't want it.
