1.
Me. (Yes, I did see the winkey.) As a keyboards guy, I know zilch about bass players, yet could easily name at least two dozen bass players who've meant a lot for my love for the bass, for example: Cor Dekker (Ekseption) Bert Ruiter (Focus) Ron van Eck (Supersister) Rinus Gerritsen (Golden Earring) Jack Bruce Chris Squire Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) - he's mentioned far too little, I feel Jannick Top Jeffrey Hammond John Glascock Jaco Pastorius Stanley Clarke JJ Burnel Bakithi Kumalo John Patitucci Muzz Skillings Doug Wimbish Sean Malone Les Claypool Georg Riedel Red Mitchell Ron Carter Charlie Mingus Is that 10 yet? Oooh ...
There are ten there that I've no idea who they are.
2.
That one who did that dum dum dum thing on that old record, you know the one... The chap who did that cool thing on that disco record The dude who did that thing with jams brown that was so very cool The bloke from that hip-hop sample that goes dang, dum dum, doooommm bip bip The mwaaaahhhhh slidy compressy bloke from the 80s That slightly overdriven 70s ampegged up chap with the beard and the heavy as **** tone Solid-dependable 90s indie bassist guy That chap with the big standy-uppy bass thing who done the nice jazzy thing with Miles and Coltrane Super fast fingered heavy metal blokey with his foot on the monitor And me I don't tend to read liner notes or know the names of the band members, does it show?
You forgot the cat in the hat.
3.
.....beauty...!!!
Thanks ... and a midweek bump.
4.
I've got it into my head that if I could make a 3mm Big Stubby out of aluminium, it would be the best pick in the world. It would feel and sound perfect and would last yonks....
... but your strings wouldn't last very long.
5. Never played most basses.
6. I'm using an old Boss TU2, but the TU3 is just as good.
7.
it's gotta be this
Yep.
8. You could also try the 760FS which are between the FL and the M.
9.
....its all just rock n roll!!
Isn't that what Billy Joel said?
10. Excellent and fast communication and delivery - buy from Steve now.
11. Excellent, of course we'd all like both.
12. I've used ordinary long scale Chromes on a P bass - like you, through the bridge - no problem.
13. When I had a WAV4 I used it through a K&K Pure Sound preamp and a Radial Bassbone too.
14. Maybe if you'd have reposted the relevant pic here it would have been easier for people to spot it: JULY 1978
15. So, my Hofner Artist, which cost me £30 in 1974 was 48 guineas ( = £50/8sh. = £50.40) in 1963.
16. First bass (1974): Hofner Artist 185 (used) £30 = approx two weeks wages after tax. Second bass (1975): Hayman 4040 (new) £110 = approx six weeks wages after tax. Third bass (1976): Fender Precision (new) £220 = approx ten weeks wages after tax. .... Seventeenth bass (2011): Takamine B10 (used) £1200 = approx two weeks wages after tax.
17. Have a great gig, sorry I can't make it.
18. It's in Stuart Clayton's book: http://stuartclayton.com/books/nile-rodgers-bernard-edwards-funk-disco-grooves-for-bass-guitar/
19.
How could they afford Ric`s? I assume that they were as expensive then as they are now? Did they nick em? Buy them with their record advance?
Rickenfakers maybe.
20.
A confession. I've played bass for nearly 40 years and have never EVER bought a single string. To put this another way, my 74 Jazz has 74 strings. Sounds lovely too. Sorry. CB
Excellent, you ought to get a medal - an old medal of course.
21.
I did a piano trio gig once where the band was in the middle of diners. The drummer was so close to the punters that his cymbales were nearer them than they were to him. I was watching him at one point and he was hitting his snare drum so quietly that the snare (which was on) wasn't actually ratlling! Its all about control. No instrument is inately loud; it is up to the player to control volume.
I sometimes play with a drummer who varies what drums he uses for each particular gig. For example, he has three different snare drums - I don't know the details but one is big, one is medium and one is small and he'll choose the one he thinks will be most appropriate for that gig.
22. It sounds to me like his coil-tap switch is broken, that's why the humbucker which goes through that switch is not working. He didn't realise that the active/passive switch was the push/pull on the vol/bal control.
23.
Thanks for that! It looks to be a active/passive switch! So does that wiring diagram mean I could change the function of the switch too? Even though at the minute the switch is missing on my bass and since its fell off the bridge pup wont work...
That sounds like the coil-tap switch and not the active/passive switch.
