Hello ..........
Bit of a pointless thread. What's next ... "Who's your least favourite average/mediocre bass player"?
... to be followed by 'what's your most disliked colour?' - actually that would make more sense than this.
Hm. That thread is from 2010 BC. I'm confirmed in having to wonder where all of this is coming from and going to, and why. I mentioned the name of a great bassist. You actively chose to respond in a positive way. Thus you contributed to the pointless thread, or affirmed my pointless post. I'm here to learn and to enjoy. I hope to contribute so other people enjoy, and when I grow up, I hope to contribute so other people can learn. Right now I feel the surveillance is getting slightly in the way, so my direct question to you is: Do you have specific reasons for writing the way you do in this thread, or is this just a coincidence and not really wished for, or do I misinterpret?
I thought I was merely having a conversation but I'll stop if it's disturbing you. -
Just a thought: String vibrates over a magnetic which sends a signal... Now here's were I just had a rather major thought, the wood the pickup is housed in vibrates when you play aswell, when this happens both the string and the pickup are moving so you get a different sound coming out. Different woods would vibrate in different ways/amounts surely. /UtterBollocks?
Let's assume, for a moment, that what you say about vibrations is correct. It may not be correct or, even if it is correct, the influence might be extremely small or even irrelevant compared to a host of other factors but nonetheless, we'll assume it is correct and of more than minimal relevance. It still doesn't follow that certain species of wood are so-called 'tonewoods' and other species of wood are not so-called 'tonewoods'. Your term 'different woods' will apply to different pieces of wood of the same species just as it might apply to different species. It's also extremely odd that looking like a coffee table and being a great so-called 'tonewood' so often appear to be in correlation.
So why do Mr sadowskys fingers basses cost a lot and my bits bolted together would not?
Because our wallets are bigger than our ears.
What does make an awesome bass?
Your fingers.
In fact, my mentioning Ray Shulman resulted in you responding, and maybe someone else then gives him a listen.
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/106388-ray-shulman-of-gentle-giant -

First of all (and speaking from a steel string guitar perspective), let's discard the notion that some species of wood make good instruments and that others don't. The concept of tonewood is a hoax. Of the few things that we can do to a guitar and still call it a guitar, changing the wood it is made of will have the least impact upon the quality of the sound that it produces. The tonal difference between a mahogany guitar and a rosewood guitar is exactly the same as the difference between two mahogany guitars or two rosewood guitars. Can you tell what a guitar is made of while listening to an unfamiliar recording? No one I know claims they can. No one at the blind listening sessions I've attended could reliably distinguish between mahogany and rosewood guitars, or maple and koa guitars for that matter.
http://www.guitarnat...cles/calkin.htm ... also: http://www.cycfi.com...nd-other-myths/
Lemme guess anyway: Cor Dekker (Ekseption) - Dutch "classical" prog - often very tacky arrangements of classical themes. Sometimes genius. Bert Ruiter (Focus) - Dutch prog Ron van Eck (Supersister) - Dutch prog akin to Canterbury scene Rinus Gerritsen (Golden Earring) - "Radar Love"! Jannick Top - from French band Magma Bakithi Kumalo - played on Paul Simon's "Graceland" Muzz Skillings - in Living Colour before Doug Wimbish Georg Riedel - a Swede who did a lot of different jazz, often rather soft or quite modern Red Mitchell - an American jazz player. Probably not that known, but very musical I think, and he had an impact on me.
Close but no cigar - I know these: Jack Bruce Chris Squire Ray Shulman Jaco Pastorius Stanley Clarke JJ Burnel Bakithi Kumalo Georg Riedel Red Mitchell Ron Carter Charlie Mingus I've heard these names but never knowingly heard or listened to them: John Patitucci Les Claypool These are the ten I didn't/don't know: Jannick Top (I didn't know the name but I must have seen him play with Magma in 1973/4) Jeffrey Hammond (I've since recognised the name, I've seen him more than once with Jethro Tull back in 1970s.) Cor Dekker Bert Ruiter Ron van Eck Rinus Gerritsen John Glascock Muzz Skillings Sean Malone Doug Wimbish My point really was I don't see the point of a load of bassists all listing a load of names, that they either like or don't like - or heard of or not heard of, for that matter. -
Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) - he's mentioned far too little, I feel
I agree Ray Shulman is/was a fantastic bassist. -
Me. (Yes, I did see the winkey.) As a keyboards guy, I know zilch about bass players, yet could easily name at least two dozen bass players who've meant a lot for my love for the bass, for example: Cor Dekker (Ekseption) Bert Ruiter (Focus) Ron van Eck (Supersister) Rinus Gerritsen (Golden Earring) Jack Bruce Chris Squire Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) - he's mentioned far too little, I feel Jannick Top Jeffrey Hammond John Glascock Jaco Pastorius Stanley Clarke JJ Burnel Bakithi Kumalo John Patitucci Muzz Skillings Doug Wimbish Sean Malone Les Claypool Georg Riedel Red Mitchell Ron Carter Charlie Mingus Is that 10 yet? Oooh ...
There are ten there that I've no idea who they are. -
That one who did that dum dum dum thing on that old record, you know the one... The chap who did that cool thing on that disco record The dude who did that thing with jams brown that was so very cool The bloke from that hip-hop sample that goes dang, dum dum, doooommm bip bip The mwaaaahhhhh slidy compressy bloke from the 80s That slightly overdriven 70s ampegged up chap with the beard and the heavy as **** tone Solid-dependable 90s indie bassist guy That chap with the big standy-uppy bass thing who done the nice jazzy thing with Miles and Coltrane Super fast fingered heavy metal blokey with his foot on the monitor And me I don't tend to read liner notes or know the names of the band members, does it show?
You forgot the cat in the hat. -
I've got it into my head that if I could make a 3mm Big Stubby out of aluminium, it would be the best pick in the world. It would feel and sound perfect and would last yonks....
... but your strings wouldn't last very long.
